Arguably the mentally toughest player of all time.
Never missed a ball.
Arguably the most solid all around groundstrokes in history.
Amazing tactical brain.
Great drop shots and lobs, both are which are very beneficial on clay, especialy the drop shot.
Was very comfortable moving on clay, and probably moved even better on clay than she did on other courts. Which was opposite many others of her era, especialy with all the grass specialist then. Goolagong, Navratilova, and probably Turnbull were also very comfortable moving and sliding on the clay, but that is about it. Even Mandlikova didn't see as comfortable moving on clay as other courts, although she was still a high quality clay courter. Austin definitely was not

She was truly tailor made for that surface. She was brought up on it under swirling winds and humid conditions of the Keys in Florida, and had a perfect coach for it in her Dad who stressed the fundamentals of stroke production, impeccible footwork and shot selection and had every attribute 'upstairs' to be lauded as the greatest competitor with the strongest clinical mind of the late twentieth. She was a walking table of contents for a modern sports pschology textbook. Nobody was mental tougher. As for those groundstrokes, they were deep, penetrating, steady and perfectly controlled. On slow clay, in her prime, she had an answer for everything.

I am not a native Floridian, but isn't that in SW Florida off the coast about 50 miles from Miami. I am talking about the weather pattern in the 'Keys" not a narrow geographic place Aren't we describing the same thing?

Chris and Nadal will still be queen and king on clay 200 years from now, despite that Djokovic fans (the dumbest fan base on the planet, taking over from Seles fans, who previously held the title, how ironic both from Serbia) are already starting to argue it is him.
