Chung's serve should have never happened

When Chung started tennis, his coach taught him proper ways to hit the ball and serve. And somewhere down the line Chung developed a had habit. Any decent coach would've fixed it immediately. The fact that his coach did not correct his serve motion is disgrace.

If I was his parent, I would ask for refund.

Seriously, Chung's serve is so bad that any decent coach would have forced Chung to change his serve motion.

He does the same thing Rafa used to do with his hitting arm at trophy

How do you know whether he had a proper technique?

Probably you don’t know anything about Chung.
When Chung started Tennis, his father was the coach so they can not ask for the refund hahahaha
Even though chung started ATP tour in 2014, first two years were almost part time player and lack of experiences and support were big factors since H.T Lee was only Person who played competitive ATP level tennis in Korea. Chung even missed deadline for FO but fortunately got Wildcard.

Finally he started more ATP matches in 2017 but his playing strategy/game plan were not enough for ATP level.
During winter time, he met Neville then Chung’s game was improved instantly and started win matches. It took less than 8 weeks under Neville. Now more and more people is watching Chung without knowing him and there are too much high expectation from those. I totally agree that his serve has to be changed but not sure Neville can do or not.
His serve motions were changed a little but it’s not working so far. Chung needs serve specialists and hope his manager and his team address this issue now but it won’t be easy.

Hope he fixes his serve fast, otherwise it could and most likely will hinder him from reaching his potential.

There is no way he can go deeper in any tournaments and he will wear and tear his body quickly. Probably he starts to decline around age of 28. He has a potential to be multiple GS winner since Fed, Nadal, Djokovic will retire in 5 years and age group of 20-22 has better chance to win multiple GS. Zverev, Chung, Coric and Shapo are leading contenders so far.
What exactly is wrong with his serve, other than it looking different?
i don’t care what kind of serving motion but almost 6’ 3” guy serving 113-8 mph first serve is not acceptable.
He occasionally hit 125mph but 120-125mph should be his average.
Also too many double faults and how many times we’ve seen him 40-15 to deuce.
He needs easy points.

I am not a Tennis technique expert but his toss is too high. He wait for ball dropping too long. If he correct the timing, it’s 120+ mph serves but it’s not consistent and during this process, seems like he is losing some power from it. Also slightly toss ball into court might boost slightly more MPH but he used to toss balls much deeper into court before (bit too much) so it might be just adjustment period now???
Some people claim that he should change his stand like Fed.

Even Roger, Rafa and Novak’s average first serve speed is not 120-125mph; more like 117/118 mph. It’s not just speed, but accuracy that’s important. And Chung’s just isn’t atm.

I think it's more related to his hip/trunk/rib cage mobility than anything else. Service motion is a lot like throwing upward motion where you need to be able to load weight on the right hip, and be able to push up and rotate forward. He doesn't quite have this motion. His serve motion looks more like, jump straight up as if you are going to dunk...

His serve has been spotted as his weakness since he debuted in ATP (also forehand), I think many would have doubted that he would make it to top 20, but here he is. People are going to study him to figure out his weakness, so let's see if he can back it up throughout this year and next year.

I think his average (to say the least) serve is a weakness that will prevent him from winning many slams. He may still sneak some but rather on slower surfaces where serve is less important.

A crazy thing is he hadn't lost his service game until the match against Isner, and then he looses it 3 times to Isner.

He gets broken constantly by better players. To some extent, he's opposite of Isner.

He's getting by because of his strokes and movement. 1st Serve is shaky but his 2nd serve is the problem. I saw him in Indian Wells and he was constantly under pressure during his 2nd serve.

I dunno if you've seen those THICC thighs, but he's definitely bigger and better built than Nishikori, who i feel like you unintentionally alluded to.
His thighs are probably two times the size of Novak's . His serve does need more pop and zing. 130 is normal for a top 10 pro of his height & weight.
Isner schooled the hell out of him. It was a student against the master.

Why are there so many weirdos who micro-analyse Chung's technique on this forum? Yeah hes style is different to many others, but it works.

I read his interview recently. He said he tries different toss and different stance little by little. I believe he would get a better serve soon or later.

Chung trained at IG (Bollettieri) along with Nishikori.

I'm sure he had access to the Serve Doctor.
He only stayed for two years when he was around 12 years old then Went back to Korea. Looks like everything is new for him. Never had ATP experienced coach and team until this year. I understand that chung and Kevin Anderson are under same manager so Neville might be easy to hook up with Chung. Honestly he already exceeded his expectations in this year and people see more potential from Chung from him. That’s why so many harsh criticism for him.
BTW who is known coach/serve specialists who can help players?

Probably people see him as next gen player who might win GS. Sick and tired of seeing nadal, Fed, and Djokovic era.
Also people thought Dimitrov, Nishikori and Raonic will be next gen but those aren’t be next gen since Fed and nadal still play and winning GS. When fed, nadal and Djokovic are retired, those players might have three-four years to retire so Zverev, Chung, Coric and Shapo has more chance to win multiple GS.

BTW his serve is not working.

The Serve Doctor I was referring to at IMG is Pat Dougherty. I do not know whether Chung actually worked with him, but he sure would have had access to him.

Chung also trained under the former top Korean ATP pro Hyung Taek Lee. From what I've heard, things didn't go well there.

Hyung Taik lee was more like advisory role. Just gave him a few tips. He was trained by Yoon for 5 years. A little surprised that Chung was prepared for new coach around March 2017.
Just found out that he worked with sky kim (he has Tennis academy in LA) as a coach until he met Neville. Possibly Sky kim refined Chung’s ground strokes more smoother before.
Also looks like Samsung’s sponsorship was ended and did not renew yet since he is no longer put his Samsung patches.
Potentially Lacoste got a real bargain deal from Chung. Lacoste 5 years deal was $600000 per a year.

Neville had an interview and revealed almost everything with Chung so far.
Exactly he knew how chung should play at ATP level matches and clearly, he helped Chung in this position.
Definitely Neville is doing excellent job but serves are still a little worried since Neville is trying to do something new for Chung’s serves but still does not show any sign of improvement. Good thing is at least Neville is aware of Chung’s serve issue.

Samsung's marketing team ****e* up by forefiting their sponsorship. Chung would have been perfect for Samsung. They spend so much money on marketing but failed to capitalize when it mattered the most. Ah, another misses opportunity...

Probably his manager wants more money. Can’t blame for Samsung since Samsung supported chung with various form of finances such as paying for coaches etc....
it was around $500000 per a year so it was not bad deal from Samsung.
How about Kia offers chung’s sponsorship for their own country men instead of Nadal who does not even drive or own Kia car hahahaha.

In what way are they not working besides being slower than some other players lol?

18-7 .. 72% win rate in singles this year alone, and 4th in the points race. His serve is doing pretty well so far if you ask me.

E.g. in the AO this year, before his Federer matc, Chung only served two more double faults than Federer did. Yeah his serve isn't as fast as the big guys or as technically correct but it is far from a serious liability. So many other players have worst serves.

Yes. He Won 18 matches and he is second person to win 18 matches in this year. Delpo was only person who won more matches and even Federer won 17 matches. Definitely He already exceed his goal in this year. No body predicted he will change so quickly and adapt/playing competitive ATP level matches. He is no longer challenger level player.
Now people see him as true next gen player but his serves won’t give him deeper in the tournaments.
That’s why many people are talking about his serves.

Watch his matches especially how he lost those 7 matches.
Many double faults in critical points and many of his serve games went to deuce.
Very rare to see over 6’-1” players struggle to hold their serve games especially 40-15.
Chung needs easy points. If he can serve 120-125mph consistently, he can win GS within a few years or at least we will see him many tournaments for SF or Final in my opinion.

Could it be his glasses?
During the ball toss, it might obstruct his view of the ball when the head is angled a certain way.

Agassi had poor serve out of Bolletri school, he managed to completely reinvent it around 1993 resulting in Major wins . Chung seems far more mentally competent so definitely good chance to fix. A lot of younger players have serves that can be improved, they're young so have time.

He watched too many Monfils matches. When his tennis balls finally drop, he'll have to stand with his feet apart and serve like a man.

Chung is 6"1 but plays like he is 5"10. Maybe body type has to do with it as well. Legs are short as hell relative to his body.
