CiCi Bellis verbally commits to play at Stanford

Credit to: @roxieap12 for mentioning this in the Stanford Men's thread. CiCi Bellis the number 1 recruit for her class and currently ranked 203 in the WTA. She has verbally committed to play for Stanford. Although she has stated she may change her mind, depending on how her professional career progresses.

Stanford has it bittersweet.

Cici said if she gets inside the top 100 she will go pro, if not that she will go to college.

Stanford is maybe hoping she gets better but lot too much better.

You can accept up to $10k PER YEAR, and that is after you have paid your expenses. Can't think of many 18 year olds in recent memory (who are remotely interested in college) who are even close to that threshold...

12.1.2.4.2
Exception for Prize Money—Tennis.
12.1.2.4.2.1
Prior to Full-Time Collegiate Enrollment.
In tennis, prior to full-time collegiate enrollment, an individual may accept up to $10,000 per calendar year in prize money based on his or her place finish or performance in athletics events. Such prize money may be provided only by the sponsor of an event in which the individual participates. Once the individual has accepted $10,000 in prize money in a particular year, he or she may receive additional prize money on a per-event basis, provided such prize money does not exceed the individual’s actual and necessary expenses for participation in the event. The calculation of actual and necessary expenses shall not include the expenses or fees of anyone other than the individual (e.g., coach’s fees or expenses, parent’s expenses).

My guess is she'll leave after a year to turn pro. Pretty smart idea actually. The competition in college tennis is definitely not going to be anything like the WTA but she will have the opportunity to return to Stanford after she's done playing pro tennis. Having the option to go to school after a pro tennis career is a great option, even better when the school is Stanford.

yes, she is WTA version of JP McEnroe. after 1 year , she should go pro and will win several majors before career is done with.

Cici Bellis really does not have to worry too much about money, she is the only heir to the Bellis fortune.

Think about it, how many people have their own tennis court in Atherton?

If that is the case of returning to Stanford after her playing days, will she still get a full ride or she will have to pay for her college? Anyone knows the answer to this question?

Pay for college, she loses scholarship when she leaves the school. Mainly because the logistics wouldn't work. Can't have a full tennis ride walking around taking away scholarship from the tennis team. And having her as an extra tennis full ride would make for some serious Ncaa violations.

why would Stanford give her a free ride ? only reason these athletes get scholarship money is because they play for the team and represent Cardinal. I think in her case, it would make sense to play for 1 year then turn pro. as she is right now, she will have tough time breaking into top 50 right away. She is still growing into her body and developing strength and power. In 1 year, she could be developed more fully with strength training and she will be more ready for the pro tour.

That's what I said, it wouldn't make sense for Stanford would only to give her scholarship while she plays.

@Tennis_Bum was commenting if she would keep her full ride after she turned pro, assuming she would go back to school.
