Cilic: I didn’t feel those conditions before

http://www.news.com.au/sport/tennis/marin-cilic-found-it-difficult-to-adapt-to-conditions-for-australian-open-final-when-roof-was-closed/news-story/2ef512bbe7080c3ff9826e8420a0876d

“Throughout the tournament I played all my matches outdoors, also preparing a hot day, 38 degrees.”
“Then first match for the final to play with the roof closed, it’s difficult.

“I have to say that decision could it have been different.

“I think that it was just little bit difficult to adjust, especially the beginning of the match. With the roof closed, it was way, way cooler than I expected.

“That was very, very difficult, especially for the final to, you know, be in that kind of a situation.”
“Well, no, they didn’t ask me. They just came to me to tell me that they are thinking about decision, and they going to make the final decision just around 7pm, just slightly before the match,” he said.

“I didn’t mind to have roof closed, but it was a huge difference in temperature from having outside 38c, then when you came in, it was like 23, 4, I don’t know. It was way cooler than I expected.”

“Just looking at my own side, I didn’t feel those conditions before,” Cilic said.

“I had a slow start in the match, losing straightaway my two service games, then catching up most of the time ... I’m saying it was very different than what we’ve played outdoor.

Pretty stupid of the organizers to have informed him later, but either way, Federer could have won.

It's just unreal to do something like this. And the manner they did it.

Feel sorry for the dude, he is Cilic so all he can do is just bend over and accept, without even being seeked for approval.

I'm gonna reserve judgment until I know more about this. Right now it seems very dodgy to me.

Feds semi was indoors right?

Federer warmed up indoors prior to the match, Cilic was warming up outdoors. How do you explain that. Federer knew way before what would happen.
C'est la vie! Cilic should try winning more tournaments and maybe they'd take him into consideration before making a decision.

The fact of the matter is playing indoors benefits Cilic's game as well and he has a lousy record vs Big Four players. He gave it a good try(better than I expected) but he couldn't get the job done. Now, he's whining like a bit ch and sounds like a sore loser.

Did Roger play indoors in any of his earlier matches??
Was the women's final played under roof to help Wozniaki or Halep.

Another stupid favoritism theory
Heres Rogers response

Q. What were your thoughts on the decision to play this final in indoor conditions?
ROGER FEDERER: I wasn't sure if it was good for me or not, to play under the roof or not. Of course, I backed myself in sort of indoor conditions. This is where my first success ever came. I do think back that usually when I play indoors, it's good for me.

But I didn't mind the heat, to be honest. I thought maybe for a bigger guy like Marin, maybe it's also going to slow him down faster throughout the match. At the end, it's not my decision. They kept me posted along the way.

I was surprised to hear they had the heat rule in place for a night match. I never heard that before. When I arrived to the courts, I was totally ready to play outdoors. They told me they were thinking -- they think it will probably be indoor. Then they kept me posted along the way.

Half an hour before, we got the word that it's going to be indoors. For me, it doesn't change anything in the preparation, to be honest. I was ready for either.

So he doesn't have the same rights as Federer just cause he wins less tournaments? He shouldn't be informed in proper time or at the same time as his opponent cause he is a smaller name? Jesus!

He is not whining. Just telling it from his perspective.

They should really make that decision a lot earlier.

He's a whiner just like you. As I said, maybe he should figure out how to close-out a match vs Big Four players(who aren't injured) instead of whining like a baby after another painful loss. How many close matches has this guy had vs Big Four players only to lose in the end? i.e. vs Federer, Djokovic, etc.

Do you honestly think if the roof was open that Cilic would have closed the match out? He's a professional tennis player. He has to be prepared for all conditions.
This has nothing to do with his record vs big 4 or closing a match out. Simply just that he had tough time to adjust. And also didn't seem to be informed since he was warming up outdoors while his opponent was practicing indoors.

I have had ESPN report confirmed by another source. Perhaps played a role in the decision to close the roof for tonight's men's final on an even hotter night.

    Christopher Clarey added,

Just reported by @ESPN: Simona Halep went to the hospital overnight for four hours and was treated for dehydration. Was released Sunday morning.

If that's true, then the decision to close the roof was justified. However, why Cilic wasn't informed in advance while Roger, if I understood correctly, was? That's really dodgy from the organizers.

These rules are bureaucratically laid-down. The heat plus humidity meant that the magic wet bulb number of 32.5 was met. They did what the rule required and closed the roof.

The rule is not generous enough to players when it is hot but not humid, but that requires a rule change.

If we go strictly by what both players said, both were given the indication that the match MAY be played indoors and the confirmation arrived shortly before the match (Fed says half an hour before). The decision to practice indoors may have been purely that of Fed's team, based on the fact that he had outdoor tennis practice under his belt anyway and he may have wanted to practice for conditions that may be different.

But didn't Roger have to adjust too? All this whining from choker Cilic about the closed roof and from Nadal about having to play so many hardcourt tournaments instead of on his beloved clay sounds like sour grapes.

And yes, this has everything to do with the fact that Cilic is a terrible match closer vs the best players. He needs them to get injured otherwise he usually flops.

If decisions like these are made only 30 minutes in advance, you can't expect to keep up an illusion of impartiality.

Guy complaining not able to play 38 degrees (which is 100 F)?? That plus an extreme humidity not only is uncomfortable for the audience but also can be down right dangerous for the two players.

Come on bruv — it's the wet bulb temperature readings close to match start that decides this, so naturally they wait till fairly close to match start:

So the referee basically did his job. It's just that we are conditioned to think of heat as 'ok' while rain disrupts the proceedings in a very obvious way so players can't complain about roof closing in that scenario. But if we accept that premise (and somebody's tweet that outdoor final should be outdoor) then the extreme heat policy itself has no meaning and it was brought in precisely to avoid players getting dangerously fatigued in, duh, extreme heat. I agree with @Bartelby that perhaps the policy needs to be more refined to give players relief sooner and more often, if anything.

Because indoor conditions automatically favour Fed no matter whom he's facing? That's nonsense, Marin has won half his titles indoors.

If Fed was facing Nadal or Murray sure, I could see the point.
Exactly, if this match was against Nadal I could see the point too, but Cilic becomes even more dangerous at indoor conditions
I dont like very much the statements given by Cilic after the match. Absolutely sour grapes and butthurt, ala USO2010 SF

Well, even Murray made an indirect reference to the roof factor after the 2012 W final loss. Nevermind that he had lost the 2nd set and the momentum was with Fed when the roof closed.

Andy is sometimes a sore loser so no big deal for me. Those endless AO finals lost should hurt a lot

I am sure the day Monfils vs Djoke is a more difficult condition. Had they close the roof on that day, I would be fine with tonight’s decision. But, tonight’s decision to close roof does seems odd.

Really smart this guy Fedr. Was ready for either. Whiners gonna whine. Heaters gonna hate. At the end of day it was better, smarter and more versatile player won!
