Cilic to expose federer false dawn

Where's a fearless Nick K when you need him? AZ did better last year against Fed on grass than this year.

Fed must lose, don't doubt your primary agenda. Thiem will take care of his rankings himself.
I'm pretty certain Thiem would destroy Fed on clay but will Fed ever play on that dirty surface again?

I know what you mean by wanting Fedal vs. Nextgen: it's the logical next step and really we need to see some new combos in finals. Cilic is part of the gen after Rafa/Djok that never stepped up so maybe this is how long it takes?

I really can't lose on this one; if both could somehow lose that would be best. Maybe Fed barely surviving five sets, aggravating his knee, and deciding to retire on the spot with his 8th Wimbledon. But no, I don't want that. We must have many historic showdowns with Thiem and Zverev:
1. Federer in the final of RG with Thiem
2. Zverev at Auz
3. Kyrgios(ok Zverev) at US Open.

Fedal vs. NextGen is what I want and grass season has not gotten the job done.o_O
They need to beat the Berdychs and Raonics(lol) in order to have a shot at Fedal. They can't just cut to the front of the line except on clay.

I would consider Cilic as part of the Rafa/Djoko/Murray gen since he's less than 2 years younger than Djoko/Murray. Delpo is in this group too, so I would say that age group is very strong.

I definitely would if those two young dummies would learn how to construct points to play winning tennis and figure out how to accentuate their strengths. The difference between Zed Younger/Thiem and Rao/Berd is that the latter two are old hats at riding what limited talent they have as deep as they can get into Grand Slams.
Grass and experience have payed off for the oldies this year for sure.:(

Well, where to draw the cut off line on a generation is not really clear. Rafa is 31; Djok and Murray 30, Warinka 31 (I think) Fed at 35 is another generation, no?

Hard courts will be interesting for NextGen and I share your pessimism. Thiem and Zed are 3 and 6 in the race. Berdbrain and RaoMug are 10 and 15 disrespectfully.:D Hard court matches will be close (well Thiem unlikely to beat Raonic.:()

It is a bit arbitrary, but there's way I'm going to lump Cilic and Delpo in with that failed Lost gen. They are also closer to Djoko/Murray in age than they are to Raonic/Dimitrov.

Lmao Berdych is actually 10th in the race? I thought he had a poor year(mainly by drawing Fed in the 3rd round at AO) until this Wimby.

Was just checking his ranking. He should be in the 13-16 range through the US Open and safely away from Thiem who is 5-8.:p (Thiem needs Monfils and Goffin to pass Tsonga to get him down in the same range.) Thiem will be set if he keeps Cilic, Raonic, and maybe Ninja in the same range as himself 5-8 seeds. Better off dealing with Dimitrov, Zverev, Goffin, and Monfils:D in his R16 showdowns (seeds 9-12.)

Berdbrain could get himself back up the rankings as he's defending nothing at US Open.

This is not some jinx thread against cilic.

Ive been saying since Miami federer has flattered to deceive and later i think cilic will tear him apart.

Cilic does everything bigger here now in 2017 and with federers cumbersome movement i can see him getting creamed in straight sets.

:D

With the obligatory false dawn intro it's time to get to the very heart of the matter. The TTW Federistas are in complete denial of the threat Cilic poses. From handwringerering at Auz now we have gross overconfidence in the face of all facts?(age, no return game on grass for years) This menace must be stopped:

Cilic must save tennis or this reign of terror may continue for years. Save us Marin. Don't let it end this way.
I think you have this all wrong meles. And I'm not talking about who the winner will be. The trolls are coming out in full throttle but the sincere federer fans are quite fearful of the looming threat of cilic.

Federer has already skipped the dirt in back to back years. I highly doubt he's ever going to play there again, especially since he's not going to stop aging anytime soon.

Heh, that photo shoot was so bizarre. Think I was so weirded out by it the first time I came across it, I didn't even notice the AO trophy. Can you even imagine something similar with the Wimby cup? I think the AELTC would take him to court.
Im not sure, wimbledon let him walk around w the golden outfit one year there. Was worse

I very much want Fed to win, but I have to admit that the devil on my shoulder is thinking about how much fun it would be to see Fednatics eat a large meal of crow...
I swear, the gloating. People talking like he's done it already and has a four slam gap over Nadal. I don't know, such hubris is usually the stuff that bubbles are made of, so let's see. Not saying Fed himself is believing the publicity, but things look ripe for somebody to call the bluff on the emperor's new clothes. I think he is more beatable than in the early part of the season, but on his most favoured turf which sort of balances the equation. Being that Fed is a great frontrunner, we will know early on who's going to take it.

I am watching the first set of the Cilic Querrey match and I am sorry, I see nothing special in Cilic's game that would trouble a fit and determined Fed tomorrow.

Exactly. I don't see where all the Cilic hype is coming from. He almost got taken to 5 by freakin Querrey. He's hitting short, loopy balls everywhere and isn't penetrating the court. Far worse than last year, and he couldn't even beat Fed with a broken knee.

I think Fed will play lights out in the final! He was clearly not at his best against Berdy as soon as he got broken back in the first. Also he more than painfully remembers being blasted off the court at the USO in 14. He doesn't want that to happen again and will put his foot down right from the start. And he can. Aside from the cold he's fit and injury-free!
But who knows? Marin might come out firing on all cylinders like in 14... or he might show some nerves. It's his 2nd major final, the first at Wimbledon and the first against a top player.
As a Fed-fan I hope for Fed in 3, as a tennis fan I hope for an epic 5-setter in which the better player may win!
That must be why most people chose Fed in 4, but really anything is possible. I don't like Fed's cold or sinus infection, and the pressure to win. He needs to bring out the maestro stuff on court, keep Cilic guesssing most of the time. Cilic is capable to blast a well played incoming ball back to the lines and he won't play it safe when he sees a chance. I have a feeling the first couple of exchanges between Fed slice and cilic will be crucial. If Cilic misses those while trying to kill it then the match is Federer's.

My analysis is that Fed's return HAS been better this year.

But you have to weight that against his age and the fact that he may be sick.

I would not bet, but I don't anyway!

I very much want Fed to win, but I have to admit that the devil on my shoulder is thinking about how much fun it would be to see Fednatics eat a large meal of crow...

People have already taken the win in advance. Yesterday a guy from fed camp posted he already counted a 3rd slam win for fed in his thirties.

As I said pre Wimby and made a thread about it, cilic is ready for another slam win. Fed could be in dangrr

If Fed loses no big deal as he got the AO over Rafa.

However if Fed wins , oh man .,, will not stop rubbing it in for the whole year
Rubbing what in? Nadal getting la decima seems to have upset the Federer fandom.

I haven't seen any nadal fan say they expected nadal to win Wimbledon. Just like no Federer fan expected Federer to win Fo... Federer didn't even end up going of course. Most nadal fans had Federer as a favourite and personally I hope Federer wins. A cilic win introduces a new multimajor winner which makes the USO much harder for Nadal. Most Nadal fans even before wimbledon were hoping for a 2 major year but the expectation is to win USO. With Murray and djokovic unlikely to be fit nadal has a great chance.

So in terms of gloating I think you have to wait till after USO.

Nadal v Federer is not as interesting as their rivalry with Djokovic because on grass and clay there is no doubt who will win.

I get you hate Rafa. But the gloating for both camps starts in Montreal through to end of USO.

As for today come on Roger.

Should Fed win today , he would have one more major than Rafa for the year at least until after the USO final is played

Why lose an opportunity to gloat for next 2 months ?

Cilic was going to "save tennis" in the QF, but Muller took care of matters a round earlier :D

Expected a better title from you, that meme was never funny in the first place. Doesn't deserve to be reused :(
GOAT thread title. Reuse for all of eternity.
MUller did what everyone (but Djok ) does--took out RafA then died next round. He didn't save tennis, he saved (I would say Fed but I don't have the same hubris as you about my man) Fed fans the worry of Rafa for the final because your weak hearts can't bear it.

I think there were a couple who were saying Nadal is going to 'prove all the critics wrong' this Wimbledon and all that, also accusing those who didn't agree of bias/prejudice against Nadal. But for the most part I agree, not many Nadal fans expected much of him at Wimbledon.

Marin has come to play so good stuff today whatever the outcome.
Total meltdown by Cilic, not due to Fed
can't hit 1rst serves, shanks routine shots
Cult will attribute it to Fed, to his level.
This is why it's all so puke-worthy.
Not just the bearskin rug poses.

I'm not going to lie. I don't just want Federer to win, I want Federer to beat Cilic to a pulp. I'm still traumatised from that US Open defeat. The beat down Cilic handed Federer that day, I thought Federer was playing against god.
