Kei Nishikori is a mini marvel and superstar of Asian sport... but can he fell giant Marin Cilic in a US Open battle of little and large? Kei Nishikori meets Marin Cilic in the US Open singles final on Monday. The Japanese 24-year-old is poised to become a superstar of Asian sport. Nishikori is appearing in his first Grand Slam final at Flushing Meadows

It's the first Grand Slam men’s final in nearly nine years not to feature one of the Big Four of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal or Andy Murray

Even while recovering from the removal of a cyst from his foot last month, Kei Nishikori was so desperate to be on a tennis court that his joint coach, Dante Bottini, had to improvise.

‘He was sitting on a collapsible chair on the court because he couldn’t run and I was feeding him balls to hit for an hour,’ recalled Bottini after his charge had beaten Novak Djokovic to make tonight’s US Open final.

Such dedication is why 24-year-old Japanese Nishikori is poised to become a superstar of Asian sport, and why he has long gone by the not entirely original nickname of Special Kei.

Ten years after arriving as a homesick boy at the renowned Nick Bollettieri/IMG Academy in Florida, he is in his first Grand Slam final and will start as favourite against the comparatively towering Marin Cilic.

It is the first Grand Slam men’s final in nearly nine years not to feature one of the so-called ‘Big Four’ of Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray. But neither of the two surprise finalists would have been top of the list to depose the established order.

Cilic, 25, has spent most of his career on the periphery of the top 10, while the fear around Nishikori, the son of an engineer and a piano teacher, is that he is not physically equipped to make the very top.

At 5ft 10in and weighing less than 11 stone his body has often failed to cope with the physical aspect of the modern game, although his natural talent has never been in question.

He has always possessed an outstanding backhand and won his first ATP Tour title at Delray Beach as an 18-year-old. Subsequently the questions have not just surrounded his physique but his mentality, particularly when it came to facing the best players.

Over the past week he has answered all of that with consecutive five-set wins over Milos Raonic and Stan Wawrinka, followed by Saturday’s semi-final against Djokovic, who he outlasted over four sets in brutal heat and humidity.

Brad Gilbert, who formed part of his coaching set-up in 2011, describes him as ‘very quiet and shy’. His faltering mastery of English may have been a part of that, and Gilbert would email him tactical instructions for matches, rather than talk to him. The missing ingredient appears to have been the addition of French Open winner Michael Chang to his team, part of the trend set by Murray when he hired Ivan Lendl.

Like Lendl, Chang has managed to get through to his charge in a way that did not happen before.

‘We get on great,’ said Chang. ‘With myself being Chinese and Kei Japanese there are cultural differences but also similarities because we are both Asian. If we are going out to eat we don’t have to say “Do you want Asian food?” It has been easy for us to adapt to one another.’

Nishikori missed several tournaments last month due to the cyst, but Chang believes that this has proved to be a blessing in disguise.

‘It wasn’t the best preparation but after three weeks off he arrived fresh and hungry. Some guys have a great summer but by the time the Open comes around they are tired.

‘I told him if he could get past the first two rounds anything could happen. I keep reminding him he has beaten everyone here, and not to be satisfied with what he has achieved already.’

Chang was a terrific fighter with lightning foot speed. Nishikori is also quick but his natural timing gives him more potent weapons than his coach ever had, despite his relative lack of size.

It has led him to become easily the best player ever from Japan, which has always produced good female players but struggled much more on the men’s side.

Their previous best of the modern era was Shuzo Matsuoka in the nineties, who is perhaps best remembered for suffering a spectacular bout of cramp that led to the rules being changed about on-court treatment.

Nishikori would become the first Japanese man to win a tennis Major, and the commercial possibilities of that would be almost limitless.

Either way, tennis is going to get its least predictable men’s Grand Slam champion since Juan Martin del Potro upset Federer at Flushing Meadows five years ago. Federer was phlegmatic after his straight-sets defeat by the hugely impressive Cilic, but this was a golden opportunity missed for him to add to his 17 Grand Slams.

Nishikori has a 5-2 record over Cilic and has beaten him twice this year. Yet the Croatian has improved significantly and is an outstanding mover for his height, meaning that the Japanese can only be considered a marginal favourite.

I think Nishikori has got this. He'll return and defend much better than Roger and I don't expect Marion to be zoning 3 matches in a row.

I don't see why Cilic would play any worse than his last 2 matches. If he had done it just for 1 match I could see it as a bit flukish, but he has done it twice now so it is a level he is comfortable playing at with his current form. I don't see Nishikori beating him if he plays at that level. Probably making it closer than Berdych and Federer, but still not winning.

Someone said Wawrinka serves and hits groundstrokes atleast equally well, but Wawrinka gave the match with Nishikori away with a ton of unforced errors (yes a lot of that due to Nishikori's great defense, but also some of it due to his usual poor concentration, inconsistency, poor percentage play and low error margin he gives himself) and very weak mental play on the big points. Still very nearly winning inspite of that. So if Cilic is most similar to Wawrinka, I see that as only a good sign for him.

In a Grand Slam final though? Cilic is not mentally strong. Berdych helped Cilic looked good and Federer was setting him up to hit those winners with his approaches. Nishikori will make him play.

LOL what has got Andy Murray's height and weight to do with the match? Now I start getting why Brits are so brainwashed about Murray's greatness, PR agents do excellent job:)

What match was this? The way I remember it Marin was throwing bombs from everywhere, regardless of what Roger did.

So it was just Berdych and Federer not playing well (what I saw was them being hit off the court, and apart from Berdych serving poorly not much else they could do; Federer would have gotten pounded even worse had he stayed back all the time instead as you suggest), and not Cilic's great play according to you? Well by that logic Wawrinka all but gave him the match with his barrage of errors, large streaks of poor play, and choking almost all the big points (and still just barely lost), and Djokovic was flat as a pancake in the semis and seems totally unmotivated ever since Wimbledon. The best person who played well against him is Raonic, who isn't all that good.

quoting the DM? A rag that can't even "spail" :) So full of daily facepalm basic errors.

There's a reason why DM is called dailyfail.

I don't care much for their journalism but when they quote stats and players (active and former) it's alright. I see you too don't have much interest in the final. If that's all you came in to say.

No Cilic was great in both matches. But Berdych apart from in patches was not great. Federer's groundstrokes have declined so majorly his only option seems to be to go to the net. But that doesn't mean he was approaching well.

I don't mean to take anything away from Cilic he has decimated two top 10 players in straights and looked damn impressive doing it. But I think Stan or Novak if they swapped with Roger and Tomas would have put up more resistance. I also think Kei will do too.

Oh yeah, because if it wasn't for the PR agents he never would have won Wimbledon and the US Open would he?

I do have to admire your guts with your crap posts. You really don't mind how stupid you look, do you? But what a shame! A great player like Novak Djokovic really doesn't deserve to have you as a supporter, does he?

You've missed the point. It's a British newspaper, so the non-tennis fans who only watch 3 matches a year know what Murray looks like and probably nobody else on tour. They are simply using him as a basis for comparison on height and weight to give readers an idea of who these "unknown" tennis players are.

Precisely!

Cilic is only 25? Wow, thought he was way older, he has been around for what seems like a long time. He dresses so badly I have never been able to watch him for great lengths of time. But he always seemed like a choke, or a guy who will fold. Beating Federer is impressive, but Federer went five sets with Monfils which told anyone who counts time spent on the court, that someone was bound to finish off Fed.

Still, Cilic could overpower Nishikori, if Kei can at least win one of the first two sets, I think he can get to Cilic.

You are the PED expert, do you think Cilic and/or Nishikori are using them and if so which ones?

I think they were pointing out that even though Andy is not as tall as Cilic he is heavier.

Cilic will turn 26 at the end of this month (28 September). Nishikori will turn 25 at the end of this year (29 December).

He's not that bad although that shirt he's been wearing does look as if he's spilt a bucket of oil down the front!

He's always been a very dangerous floater when he's on and has beaten the likes of Nadal and Murray when he's in this mood but he has been maddeningly inconsistent. Goran's coaching has evidently worked wonders in stiffening his resolve and sharpening his mental focus.

Given that this was the Daily Mail, I was surprised that the headline didn't read something like "INTERNATIONAL TENNIS FINAL CANCELED OVER THREATS OF NEW DEADLY VIRUS CREATED BY JEREMY CLARKSON AND PIERS MORGAN"

Cilic definitely looks heavier than before! he used to be wafer thin, now (i didn't notice till this tournament) he looks much more filled out. i especially notice this when he shook hands with Federer...

Cilic Wins In 4 Sets...

Cilic will take this in 4 sets tonight, Nishikori had a good run but he won't be able to break serve against Cilic unless the wind wreaks havoc on Cilic's high toss. If he can't break Cilic will take Goran's GREAT advice and feel no pressure to rip on the 5-9 Nishikori's serve and he is bound to get the one break he needs per set.
