With those long arms, I wouldn't mind experimenting with a one handed backhand for him, although it might be too late now.

I'd want to work on his mentality. He is so tight with the big boys, and is almost resigned to losing. There is talent there, as we see in the second set. The head is just out to lunch.

And that is that. Winner.

Thank you. That is what I was looking for. He definitely has some challenges. There aren't many young'uns that can put much pressure on the top three. Each of the up and comers has their weaknesses.

I am enjoying being a "new" student of the game, even though I am not young! Thank you very much jake for your insight. That is exactly what I was looking for.

I guess everyone on tour except the top 5 should retire then. We can watch tournaments with the same 5 player draw every week. Excellent idea.

there was a tournament called the Pepsi Challenge in the 70's that was just the stars, maybe there should be more of these than just the WTF

I can't believe anyone thinks Milos will be number one. He's a lame servebot.

I agree that at this stage it is VERY hard to think of Milos as a number one BUT it is not fair to think of him only as a serve bot. His forehand is also very strong.

Against the top guys, though, he is not nearly versatile enough, and this result was very easy to pick.

Not sure what Ljubicic sees in this guy Raonic. Hes a horrible tennis player. Very Limited talent

Dude.. It's enough. Stop flaming. Raonic is number 7 in the world. You don't become 7 in the world being a "horrible tennis player". Enough with the hyperbole.

+1. I'm not a big fan of sports psychologists - but couldn't hurt.

Playing against a legend should be loose and easy - everyone thinks you're going to lose. Come out swinging. Not tight as a 14 yr old asking a girl to the dance...

Why is it that guys with Big serves, No groundies and No return game, Do Really BAD against Federer all the Time and become his Pigeon ?

Because he is good at neutralizing the big first serve, and can beat them from the baseline. They usually all have bad movement which Fededer exposes.

Sorry. Some of the people ripping him are trolls. But the Isner comparison is legit. And Isner is a serve and inside out FH - AND he's beaten Fed - on clay, in SUI in Davis Cup. Beaten Djokovic TWICE. Won sets off Nadal at RG. He doesn't freeze up against the top guys. Sorry if you're Canadian and you don't like hearing it. But it's the truth.

His forehand is strong, in that he can hit it fast, but his technique is a la WTA, so his ability to hit spin is limited. Thus, his margin for error is small. His forehand technique is a mismatch for his size and natural power. This will always hold him back in today's game. He's not consistent enough.

Guy's like Tsonga, Murray and Delpo can get away with hitting relatively flat on the forehand side, but that's because they are more talented ball strikers than Raonic.

FAir enough, but why isn't Isner still in the tourney and why isn't he ranked higher than Raonic if he is so much "better"? Just curious.

isner at least makes the big boys work. you know you're in a match with big john. the big boys just cruise through matches with MILOS. breezy...

Isn't the point here that everyone is trying to make their game "work"? Why is everyone so negative??

I'm not a big defender of Raonic's game. My post was really just to add that Raonic has a strong forehand and is not just a big serve. In regard to what has been mentioned about Isner, I agree, Isner has had some great results against the big guys, including wins over number 1's on their favourite surfaces.

Now you sound like @90's Clay and the other trolls.... So one tournament and Raonic is better than Isner? I gave you a rundown of Isner's big wins against the best. What are Raonic's.

I'm not going to defend the trolls - but I can see where they're coming from. If the ATP becomes a game where very tall guys can serve their way into and take up spots in the top 10, the game isn't going to be very fun to watch going forward (after the Big 4 retire). I'm sure the ATP thinks about it; not sure what they can do.

The thing with Isner is that he, for whatever reason, can be counted upon to rise to the occasion when he plays the top guys. Personally speaking I think Raonic does have more upside, but if I had to pick between the two in a hypothetical scenario against the best in the world, I'd go with Isner.

That said, day to day against the rest of the field Raonic has been outperforming Isner. Time will tell if that will change, but as of now I don't see Isner being able to overtake Raonic in the rankings any time soon.

Raonic will never be world #1, too limited a game.

But his limited skills have him firmly in the top 10 now so much respect to the guy.

I'm pretty sure that's not what I said. I never referred to one specific tournament. We all know anything can happen in any one tourney. I was referring to the official ATP ranking. But who am I to criticise the ATP?? I am glad you are willing to take them on. I don't think this makes me a troll.

Why don't we just throw out the official rankings? Does that make sense to everyone here?

You said "why isn't Isner still in the tournament?" - how else would you expect that to get interpreted?

And as far as rankings? It's dictated by points. Isner doesn't play as many tournaments as Raonic due to the health issue related to being so tall (the rest of his body didn't scale the same way - look at all the NBA centers who had to retire early due to foot, leg issues - they are outliers when it comes to growth).

PS - I actually think @TheLjubicic and Piatti have improved Raonic's return and BH (volleys.... maybe a tiny bit) - but the Canadians coming to these boards over-hyping the guy is getting old. Reminds me of when Murray first showed up. He'd win a few matches and the Brits had him winning majors - and we all know how long that took.

Ranoic lost the match even before it started. He looked tight as a drum during the pre match interview, came out the same way in the first set and blew it away. In his mind it looked like he wasn't playing a 33 years old Fed, but rather Fed's aura. He recovered in the second set and actually played better than Fed for a while and put him under pressure, but Fed was able to close it out.

Totally agree. Good assessment.

Raonic has improved his game but when you shake his confidance you can see a lot of the error's and old style weaker groundies come out.

Fed jumps on him every time they play and Raonic doesn't have the answers. But he's not alone against Fed in this case.

Well I was completely wrong - How did Feds do that....

I didn't see the Match but Fed must have got inside MRs head somehow .....

Flabbergasted...

Couldn't watch the match, but this is seriously mug worthy from Raonic.
I guessed 6-3 6-4, but he even performed below that.
Lost 2 SF to a guy 10 yrs older than him, & missed chance on making a Slam final. Maybe he shouldn't spend 95% of the time practising only serve.

LMAO the servebot can't deal with low slice junk returns. The behemoth having trouble bending his knees! Wow, getting to the final sure was easier last year when Nadal wasn't at home fishing and jetskiing!

Yeah I notice that Raonic has a lot of trouble with those short slice returns. Almost each one was an automatic point win for Federer.
