I got the inside info from Ferrero. Alcarez was told to tank that match against Monfils so that he can get the needed rest going into the US open..... I knew It............ (y)

HH continues to cut an unimpressive figure here in 2024
Good for Tiafoe, though. Second career Masters SF. I realize he didn't beat a who's who in getting there, but it's still a notable achievement. He's put together a decent summer with the Washington SF (winning three matches) and Cincy SF (winning four matches). Wimbledon was a decent result as well. Before that, his season was fairly miserable (except Houston).

I saw highlights of Sinner vs Rublev and it's a bit worrysome seeing Sinner clearly hobbling around between points. His hip is giving him lots of problems still.
The USO feels crazily unsettled on both the men's and women's side. There's SO much going on with injuries, seemingly some burnout from adding the Olympics, general performance downslides for some (e.g., Coco). Maybe it all plays out and it's the usual cast of contenders at the end. But, I think we'll see some genuine surprises of top players underperforming and also some surprise great runs.

he said, make it believable, freaking smash your racquet like you are possesed, that will keep them guessing

LOL yeah, it's definitely been explained MANY times before... Anyways, yes, the fixed seeding was scrapped many years ago, in order to prevent players from making too many calculations in the leadup to slams (and possibly tanking) as well as to avoid repetitive draws etc. Now, the 1 seed may be drawn against 13, 14, 15 or 16 in the R16, against 5,6,7 or 8 in the QF, against 3 or 4 in semis, etc.

Only thing you know for certain going into a draw is the position of the 1 and 2 seeds.
Thanks. That makes sense. Seems kind of unlikely players would tank just to game the rankings/seedlings, but I see the potential there. Thank you!

So few people talking about this match! Rune playing really well. Good to see him showing composure out of the gates as opposed to being shaky early on. Scoreline doesn't show it but Draper has had some chances, Rune just doing well to cover the court and force him to play the extra ball.

Tennis could use a shot of adrenaline right now. The question is will anyone be able to deliver?

Draper should go closer to the Net, theres where he can display some magic

Both guys seem hopped up on something, so much nervous energy!

Vitus survives three break poits, proceeds to break Draper, and will serve for the match.

Yeah, I never thought I'd be rooting for Rune in a match again, but Draper deserves some comeuppance.

This is a sport, an area within the anthropological realm in which strategic deception reigns (see PEDS) because the sport's clients want PEDS and ‘naughtiness’ to be used regularly. So everybody is getting what they want.

The most admired and respected tennis player on this forum is arguably the homophobic Irish-American Jimmy Connors.

Draper has done nothing to be choleric toward him.

Nihil sub sole novum.

Is it my imagination, or is Sinner playing slightly differently now from his early 2024 form? His groundstrokes look wristier, less powerful.
I thought so as well. Maybe it was due to the wind and he not being able to hit as cleanly.

When was Connors homophobic? I know he’s a bit of a jerk, but I haven’t heard anything like that from him.

I distinctly remember hearing homophobic slurs from Connors to other players, twice against Lendl and once against Sundström in RG 84 (QF, "little F.").

He directed the epithet at the umpire during the first game of the final set of the 1977 USO final against Vilas.

The current argument for downplaying JC's behaviour, that the use of such an epithet in public places (and even at events that could be televised) was commonplace, does not seem legitimate to me. Even in those days, when such behavior was tolerated, conservative people with a modicum of education would have considered it bad taste.
