Does anyone know what's going on with Ljubicic? He was doing so well in the beginning of the year and seems to have fallen off.

Gonzalez & Monfils are through.
Anyone have any thoughts on Safin-Murray?
Anyone have any thoughts on Nalbandian?

I like Safin at this point. Not sure how much longer I'll stick with him, however.

Gonzo def. Nalby, interesting. Monfils def Beck, he's getting some good momentum. O Rochus def Santoro. Hewitt Rusedski looks like a good match.

good win for horna and for gonzo....pretty surprised at the gonzo results though i thought nalbandian would take the win...did anyone watch the match?

Wow Hewitt has a much easier time to the semifinals now with Gasquet and Nalbandian down. But now he has to get by Ancic, did anyone see his match (Hewitts), was he just playing badly or was Rusedski just playing great?

Gasquet results have been too inconsistent. I dont know why there is such hype about him being the future player to dominate the tour. Gasquet needs to rebuild his game like Federer did, he tries to be too agressive at times.

Edit:

BTW Hewitt played horrible in that first set against Greg. He was spraying backhands all over the place and could barely make a return. Once he took off the Pat Cash bandanna he started playing alot better.

Kinda reminds one of (M.I.A.) Verdasco, donnit?

Man, this second set of Safin vs. Murray is amazing. Marat is somewhere else at the moment. Murray is up 3-0. And has another BP against Marat.

Marat did win the first set, 6-4.

Marat is going to let this set go and focus on the third. Should be interesting. The UK journalists are going nuts.

5-0 Murray.

If anyone wants play-by-play for the third, please let me know. I can do it, most likely.

Susan I would appreciate the updates. Murray mania would hit the UK if he manages to pull this one off. Big things have been expected from him after his impressive run at Wimby. After Greg and Tim, he is the only player who has shown some promise. I hope the US throw him a bone soo that he avoids the tricky qualifying rds.

All three Brits sent packing in the second rd. Murray put up a very respectable performance and Greg gave Hewitt a big scare. But what is up with Tim Henman, he has been looking soo flat this year. Another early exist losing to Chela 4 and 4. Apart from Moya (shoulder), Tim has probably dipped the most from the players that were in the top 8 last year.

What can be attributed to such loss of form??.

I don't know if Henman will be able to ever return to his previous form. I really like is game, but I don't see him making noise any more. There are different stages on a player's career, and I'm afraid that Henman is facing his sunset. The same goes to Moya.

Unless you're Agassi, there is a tough competition out there for a veteran player. Specially if you carry an old injury (Moya) or you are over the 30's (Henman).

In the case of Henman, I think that unfortunately his time is gone just because his age: I'm not saying he's totally done, of course. But he's slowly going the way down. Too many younger players willing to be in the top 10.

...

And for Murray, I think today he gave some good signals. He's young, though. He has time to improve. I think it would be counterproductive putting him already in the middle of the spotlights. It seems that British press is eager wainting the moment to unlead the "Murray-mania", but that's not good for the young Andy and could become a sort of anticlimax. Giving he time, he could do some fine things.

Maybe British press is kind of impatient, because Henman seems to be going and Murray doesn't seem to be coming yet.. and in the interval, Rusedsky is not filling the empty.

Well, the Brits have been stuck with Tim for a very long time, Rusedski being Canadian and all, so understandably they go nuts every time Murray wins on the ATP tour. I love Marat's game and personality, but I was sort of sorry for Murray to have lost early again. He will be a major threat next year, though. You think the tabloids are going crazy now? Wait till next year's Wimbledon. If Murray makes it to the quarters, UK will go insane.

The Brits are disappointed all their ponies out.

In any event, I've been doing several things, but caught the end of the Fed doubles match. Lots of good matches today. Here's some info, if you are interested. I haven't proofed it. Friedl/Pavel saved matchpoints.

Okay, here following Friedl/Pavel vs. Allegro/Fed.

6-7, 6-1, 4-4, on serve in the third set.

Fed is serving.

40-30. Great volley by Fed. Friedl into net.

The strategy of Friedl/Pavel is obvious – keep the ball away from Federer. But Yves did his part.

5-4, Allegro/Fed.

Nice cool conditions here now. A fair amount of people here, but Court 3 is not packed.

Pavel is serving.

Let, first serve.

Fed overhits return. 15-0

The guys hit totally to Allegro, but a volley went short, and Fed ran in front of Yves and picked it up. Friedl passed him, but Allegro was there with the overhead winner.

Hey VR, great report! Thanks!

I was wondering, whenever you get back from the Moya match, how was Federer playing? Still rusty, or...? He looked pretty rusty today against Kiefer, so I was wondering, did he play well out there?

Well, it's hard for me to assess since Pavel and Friedl kept hitting to Yves. *lol*

Allegro and Fed had their chances at the end, of course, with 4 matchpoints, but the other guys volleyed better at crucial moments. Fed and Yves miscommunicated on a few shots, and banged racquets a time or two. But they definitely were outplayed in the tiebreak.

My friend watched the whole match, though, and she said that Fed did hit more UE's than normal. But he doesn't play doubles much either.

Okay, off to the tennis soon. I'll probably take my laptop out to the Grandstand court and follow the Ginepri/Moya match. So if it turns out to be good, I can give you some info on that. I doubt that will be on TV. Most likely ESPN will pick up the Roddick match -- going out on a limb with that prediction. :D

Marat making quick work of Hrbaty!

Yep, and Hewitt is not having any trouble against Ancic so far. Although Ancic seems to be getting a bit more serious in this set.

Just popped my head into grandstand and Monfils had just gone up a break against Youzhny. I should go out there, but it's so darn hot and humid here.

Monfils just won the first set.

Monfils lost the second set, 1-6. Hewitt won easily. Roddick and Chela are now on court. It's looking like rain, but it's been like that most of the day.

Youzhny is about ready to finish Monfils off. So I'll follow the Moya/Ginepri match. Just hope it's good. Tennis has been so-so today.

M. Ancic 1 4
L. Hewitt 6 6

Ancic did much worse than Rusedski, it only shows how well Rusedski's playing these days. With his game, he really created problems yesterday to Hewitt.

Ginepri's doing great these days too ... winning vs. Moya ...
2 years ago Moya won the tournament, but as I mentioned, he seems to have lost muscle and conditioning since.

Ancic was being outplayed by Hewitt. He stayed back too often and was spraying forehands during long rallies with Hewitt. Lleyton served superbly though and his net approaches were damn good. Lleyton net game is quite underrated.

Are you in Mason..."VamosRafa" watching the tourney?
Can you post pics?

Yes, of Rafa. Have plenty of those. But mostly I'm doing match reports and sending them to Bob Larson Tennis. I will be writing an article on my interview with Brad Gilbert. And I've been doing some Rafa site work here, too -- which is why I met with him earlier in the week.

http://vamosrafael.smugmug.com/gallery/735669

I have more photos to upload, but we have some others from fans, too.

My job here, though, isn't as a photographer. My camera isn't very good.

But Tennis Warehouse is very good to our site, and I thought some of you may enjoy the extra match reports and info. I purposely didn't post the stuff re Rafa earlier in the week, but now I'm doing stuff re lots of players.

his volleys are quite sharp.

Russians vs. Russians

I guess in Cincy we have the first tournament for some time in which the Russian men outnumbered the Russian women in two parallel Tier I tournaments in the QFs:

in Cincy: Safin, Davydenko, Youzhnyi are in the QFs
in Toronto: Myskina & Petrova are in the QFs
