Clash 98. Speed 360+ MP. VCORE 100 v6 (vs. 95 / 98)

I have had the new Yonex Vcore v6 95/98/100 for a week. I have some interesting notes that I haven't seen or heard yet.

Notes:
I do not modify my frames in any way, aside from overgrip.
I play five days a week, 90-120 mins indoors
4.0 baseliner male @45, playing with a 5.0 all-courter female (who only plays at 100% and is 20 years younger).
I have played with over 20 racquets during covid. I have a Slinger ball machiine, and several friends at my club who are always available.

Sticks I tried for a week or so:
Pure Strike 100 - good weight for me, but too stiff and no soul
Pure Strike 18x20 - too stiff, too heavy and/or not HL enough
Pure Strike 16x20 - too stiff, too heavy and/or not HL enough
Pro Staff v13 97L - far too stiff
Blade 16x19 v7 - I very much like this, if it were 5 grams lighter and a smidge more HL = yum
Gravity Tour - liked it a lot, but was missing something
Radical Pro (new) - little too heavy
Clash Pro - liked it for a short time, then it got weird on me

Other sticks I owned and liked for a while (this year):
Aero VS - before I learned about the effect of stiff frames on our joints
Pro Staff 97 v13 - before I learned it's too heavy for me

Specs on the racquets I have now (including overgrip and otherwise stock):
Clash 98 332/11.71, 31 3/4 - 8HL (stock it is 331SW)
Speed MP 360+ 317/11.18, 32 9/10 - 3.75HL (stock it is 330SW

The Clash 98 are my primary sticks.
However, I tweaked my wrist recently. I was feeding a friend for a while, and probably did it then. Not sure.
So I spent the last few weeks with the Head 360+ Speed MP. This is an amazing racquet for me.
It's a little lighter than my Clashes, my wrist appreciates the lower overall weight a lot more, even though the SW is so close.
The Speed MP is lighter indeed, but the stick is still so stable! Very impressive.

Then I got the three Vcores v6 on demo, 95 98 100
without overgrip:
95: 326/11.50
98: 322/11.36
100: 318/11.22

Primary point of this post:

(I hadn't touched a Yonex in the past 15 years, so for folks who are not aware of the different Yonex frames, this may be helpful for you)
The Vcore 100 is only a 300 gram stick.
The scale doesn't lie, but it plays much higher than that! And if you hit with a modern swing path, the control is there!

Folks probably go into hitting with the 100 (or completely skip it) thinking, "Oh, it's the 100, it's for a beginner. The 98 is probably more for me".
And guess what, maybe that is true to some extent.
However, the new Vcore 100 is SO VERY close to the 360+ Speed MP! If you are currently playing with a 98 that is on the lighter side, or a 100 of any weight... you need to give the 100 a fair shot.

The Speed MP has a slightly more plush feel to it, but that is not saying that the 100 Vcore is not comfortable, because it is.
The Speed may have a smidge less power and therefore slightly slightly more control, along with lower launch angle, less easy depth.
Serving was fine for me, with these 100s, despite the larger frame moving through the air, primarily b/c they are lighter.
THBH seemed more consistent with the Yonex.
The Yonex handle is a little longer than any handle I've ever used.
Speed MP and Yonex 100 Vcore both have good stability for 100!
I can NOT believe how stable either of them are, but especially the Yonex, b/c look at the swingweight:

Yonex Vcore v6 100 with overgrip 323/11.39, 32 7/8 - 4 3/4 HL (stock it is 324SW)
Speed MP 360+ with overgrip 317/11.18, 32 9/10 - 3.75HL (stock it is 330SW)

Some reviewers said they wanted more control, so the 100 is not for them. They obviously are drawn to the 98 or even the 95.
I played with those two and they are indeed nice for what they are, and their weight.
But I swing hard and fast vs. a 5.0 female. And I had more control and played better with the 100! I have a modern swing path, obviously.
If you hit flat as a board, the ball may sail on you, with the 98 or 100!

If you have a modern swing, and like a 300 gram stick or have wrist issues (and was consider going down in weight) do not discount the 100.

The strings in it? blue poly tour or poly tour something, not sure. mid range +2 is what demos normally come in at.
After one day with it, it felt amazing.
Update: post number 7 below has more on strings in both the yonex and speed!

Vcore 100 vs. the 98
When I look at the 98 after playing with the 100?
The 98 is a lot heavier. But it's far more headlight.
Stability was a little improved obviously, but I'm telling you, the 100 is doable!
I could play with this 98 all day, it does everything well.
But, I noticed a lower launch angle and didn't get the depth I wanted (like with the 100)
The 98 is a tad too heavy for me at 305, I guess, since I like the Speed MP and the Vcore 100.
So there should be a 98L right? at 300?
Nope, the 98L is 285 gram racquet. And this is a fail. Why would they have a 98L at 285?
I feel the two 98's should be 300 and 305/310.
There is more access to spin with the 100, it’s like an aero but bigger sweet spot, more comfort, and more control for me. The spin is fun and addictive; you don’t need to overdo it, no windshield wiper motion required.
I could own both though, and use the 98 until I get tired and/or only use the 98 when my wrist is feeling perfectly ok. They play similarly enough IMO. But yes there things that standout: the 98 feels a little bit more plush, heavier but more HL, more control/less power, again lower launch angle/less spin.

Vcore 95 vs. the 98
I thought the 95 was going to be like a Prestige. But it was not. It had a little more power than the Prestige and was easier to play with.
The weight of the 95 and 98 seem VERY close, you can barely notice the difference.
I don't have much to add here b/c I didn't play with the 95 too much, string broke.
But the sweet spot in the 95 is larger than you would expect in a 95. So don't be afraid to try it.

So, I think I'm transitioning from the Clash 98 to the Vcore 100 or Speed MP.
Leaning Yonex at the moment.
Neither of them are giving me arm issues, after 10+ hours with them.
And I have enjoyed improved consistency from them (vs Clash 98).
Stability (about the same as Clash 98) has nit been an issue, surprisingly - while giving my wrist a break with the lower weight!

comfort - consistent strokes - stability - lower weight = the tennis “hat trick” for me!
I'm babbling now, but I hope this helps someone.
I'm not the best at articulating this stuff, so I hope it makes sense

Cheers!

p.s.
updates below, as I purchased the vcore 100 v6.
more updates with string choices, fails, weigh-ins, etc!!!
and then ultimately, a change to the vcore 98 v6.

Would love to get your take on the comfort level. I'm very wary of sticks over 64 RA...

There is something amazing about how plush the speed 360 and 360+ feels.

The Vcore 100 is a little more crisp. But not on the level of a Pure Strike or anything like that. More plush than the Prostaff 97 v13 - by about two points I feel.

It’s doable. Worth a demo. I put a lot of miles on all the vcores this week and no issue.

Awesome in-depth review! My black 360+ Speed MP arrived today and mine has virtually the same specs as yours! Glad that it’s light and stable because that’s exactly what I was looking for! Can’t hit with it yet as we are still in lockdown : (

Don't count out the 98L. I've seen Fukky play really well with it.
Also the mvp looked like it was the 100 player.

what are you stringing them with tho?

the yonex demo sticks rocked the blue yonex PTGP 1.30. I asked what LBS they would be strung at and they said probably mid range, plus 2 LBS.
After one day with it, it felt amazing.
I’m not sure if this Vcore is string sensitive or not yet.

the speed MP demo had a cheap multi in it. And it felt good.
then I put a full bed of a cheap poly in to test it further. Diadem elite xt. Shaped string. I loved it from first hit. 52 LBS. I do not think that this racket is string sensitive at all!

I think that the Smart 1.25 would be fun to try with either of them.

The new Vcore have the same new technology as the clash where they are supposed to flex more on impact. So I feel it would be especially neat to try smart in the vcores.

Update

Picked up the VC 100 today. Strung it with Smart 1.25 @ 48 LBS

I was only able to play 35 minutes
The setup didn’t require any “settling” (this is normally the case for me with Smart)

loved it at first hit.

The stick came in at 300 grams exactly -unstrung.

with OG and Smart 1.25 strings it weighs exactly 320grams/11.29oz
with the yonex 1.30 strings, it was 323/11.39oz

It is more HL than my demo which- had heavier strings. It is a smidge over 32 1/2 - Whippy.

My THBH has never been better.
Serves are stronger than normal.

Speed MP 360+ 317/11.18, 32 9/10 - 3.75HL (stock it is 330SW

The Clash 98 are my primary sticks.
However, I tweaked my wrist recently. I was feeding a friend for a while, and probably did it then. Not sure.

98: 322/11.36
100: 318/11.22

The Speed MP has a slightly more plush feel to it, but that is not saying that the 100 Vcore is not comfortable, because it is.

Cheers!

I don’t think the 98L is a fail. I demoed a bunch of the Yonex line and really liked the Vcore Pro97 and the Vcore 98. Then just to give it a try I demoed the Vcore 98L and really liked it the best. With just a little weight it plays beautifully and the control is the best for me with the light model.

fair enough. I have a lot to learn.
I assumed anyone who wants a 98, would at least be in the 300-305 grams unstrung arena.

I was thinking the same thing that’s why the first rackets I demoed were the Vcore 98 305 and the Ezone 98 305 and the Vcore pro 97. I liked the 97 the best of those 3 but it seemed too stiff in the upper hoop. The other 2 were okay but did not play that great for me.
Then on a whim I tried the Vcore98 285 and instantly I was impressed at how well I could rally with this light racket, the control was excellent and it has a nice crisp feel but not harsh. With an over wrap and a little weight added I’m right at 11 ounces and this racket plays very good. It has a much better feel than the other ones mentioned.

I know on this site it seems that most feel that you have to use a heavy racket to play well but I’ve found that some of the lighter rackets can play very good. Of course there is more plow through with a heavier racket and stability, but if a player cant whip the heavier racket fast enough especially once tired then it can hurt more than help.

well said, and good info to share indeed.

played 90 mins today
and again, LOVE the serve with the 100!
strokes feel great.
haven't volleyed too much yet.

I now know, that a 300 gram racquet -plus strings and OG, are perfect for me - as long as it has good stability for it's weight class, which the vc100 does have...

I am going to demo the Vcore Pro 100 again because that was one of the better rackets I tried from Yonex.

I would imagine that will be one of the next racquets to be updated, right?

That might be the case but not sure. I asked TW and they said that as far as they know Yonex has released all their updates for this year already and they have not been notified on anymore.

After some more testing - I’m sorry to report that a full bed of Smart strings - at 46 or 48 LBS - are probably not ideal for folks who hit at 4.5 or higher (hard pace). This is just my opinion. But I think it stiffens up too much. Playability feels great. It’s more of the result on my wrist/arm.
It must be stiffening up to 56/58 based on what I’m feeling.

vcore 100 v6 for 90-120 mins x five days with full bed of poly yonex strings at 54 - no problem

Aside from 30 mins yesterday, I take two days off.

Same stick with smart at 48 - sore sore sore.

Do you have that issue with that string in other racquets?

update:
cut out the Smart 1.25 (48lbs) after only one day.
too stiff for high pace, should have figured this out with my previous frames, the clash 98.

strung it with element 1.25 at 53/50 today and hit for 90 mins - right off the machine.
no issues.
felt good from the jump and a lot better after about 25 mins. nice pocketing.

Another day on the element strings with no issue - Vcore 100.

also I used the speed mp for a set today. Much lower launch angle. Less power. More control. Similar plow. But feels a smidge lighter in the hand. Probably will retire this one for a bit and stick with the 100vc

I do want to find a slightly less powerful 17G string for my vc100, that has good spin potential and durability.

Any verdict on the size of Yonex grip shapes? Do they run a little larger than Wilson and Head grip shapes?

I may not be as sensitive to slight "differences" in exact size/shape. But I am not experiencing any issues. And I was juggling all three brands 1-2 weeks ago.

Some of them do run a little large. I just purchased a Vcore 98 with a 4 1/4” grip and it measured 4 5/16”.

I just got a second vcore 100 v6.

with overgrip:

demo 16G yonex poly tour pro - weighs: 11.39/323

Stick #1 17G luxilon smart - weighs: 11.29/320 (didn't like this setup, lasted one day)
Stick #2 17G head hawk / 17G wilson sensation - weights: 11.29/320 (didn't try this yet, will report back tomorrow)

Japan made FTW

I restrung stick #1 with 17G element strings

what were you using before?
and how do you like the new 98?

I was using the Clash 100. I’m now using the new 2021 Vcore 98L. I only purchased one until I’m sure it’s good enough to switch to permanently. I just got in the Vcore 95,97 and pro 100 to demo.

I liked full poly at 56lbs in these rackets but right now I’m using Ashaway Kevlar main with a poly cross and this set up plays terrific.

My Vcore98 came today - exactly 322g strung with Hyper-G 17g. Dont have a swingweight machine but can measure at a string shop. The grip is pretty much the same as recent models with the fairly thin OEM grip. I sometimes get 4 1/2 but got 4 3/8 this time to put on a thick grip since I have a lot of leeway with weight.

tlm

G.O.A.T.
Interesting, I'm a 4 1/14 plus overgrip on my Head racquest and it's perfect.

Did you measure it? Being 1/16” off is not much and probably wouldn’t be noticed. I’ve demoed quite a few Yonex rackets in the last few weeks and most have been pretty close. The new Vcore 98L that I purchased was the racket that was a little large, so maybe once the new grip gets broke in the grip size will be accurate.

Major update today!
It hit me yesterday that since I figured out that it was a combination of playing with SMART strings at 48lbs and hitting vs. 4.5 and 5.0 players was the reason my wrist and arm had pain over the past month.... and not that I needed to go with a lighter stick... that I should go with the 98 vcore v6.

so I now I have two vcore 100 v6, that I won't be using. just listed them.

I used the vcore 98 v6 today, purchased it and I'm going to stick with it!

threesome will soon be sad by ryan mac, on Flickr

nice, enjoy the demo!

I played with it during my 90 min workout today.
1.25 element, 53 mains, 50 crosses.

last week, I thought was able to swing out with the 100, I was.
but I assume as my wrist got closer to 100% (which finally I reached this morning), I was not at full capacity.
so as this week wore on, I was having to dial it back more and more each day.
I was able to surprise my (higher ranked) hitting partner, more often, with the 100.
but I craved more consistency. I really wasn't out to seek more plow, honest, the 100 felt fine here, surprisingly.

I hadn't hit with the 98 since last week, I returned all of the demos last friday. so I only have today to draw on....

reminder, solid 4.0 baseliner, swinging hard vs. a 5.0 who has incredible range.

1. more consistent. I was able to keep rallies going longer, I was no longer hitting a "oh wow sorry".
2. 2hbh. felt just as dialed in, just a little less put away power. feels improved, vs. the speed mp and clash 98 (with either vcore)
3. serve. good pop, good accuracy, nice slice on 2nd
4. forehand. I can really swing out now, and just play how I'm wired. as my wrist healed, I could see myself having issues with the power of the 100. with the 98, I wasn't hitting as many winners, but I was moving the ball around with more confidence.
5. stability. a bit more than the 100 for sure. volleys felt more solid. hitting high balls and digging low balls felt "better". I could sense a little less twisting on off center hits.
6. mobility. now that my wrist is good again, felt great. and I made a point to NOT touch my 100 today, just go in and hit with the 98 :) - when my wrist was weak last week, I felt that this stick was a little too heavy, I preferred the 100 at that time, and the speed MP.
7. comfort. yes here is something that is a definite plus for the 98. it feels more plush. same strings, same lbs, too! without checking the stats, I bet it's 1-2 points lower RA. it even has a different sound to it.

I think yonex did a wonderful job with both the 98 and 100! it's just a matter of 300 grams / more power vs. 305 grams / less power & smidge more stability/comfort.

hope this helps someone, in some way.

IDK what strings you prefer, but with my first 98, I have strung it with Element 1.25 @ 53/50.
I like a 1.25 and/or 17G as I'm not a string breaker. And I prefer to keep the head light, and comfort up.
I like the pocketing feel. And I really can't see going up any higher in tension with the 98. You have more than enough control down here at 53/50 with a poly.
I have a ton of different strings on hand and will play around with them, but I think I'll be sticking with 53/50. If anything, I may try 52/49.

My specs on the 98:
unstrung 306 grams, it's a gram over spec. they only had one grip3 at my friend's shop, and I settled for it.
with 1.25 element strings 320 / 11.29 strung with a balance of 32 7/10
added an overgrip and it's 325 / 11.46 with a balance of 32 1/2

for reference, I had a 98 on demo over a week ago:
322 strung with 16G
326 / 11.53 with OG, and a balance of 32 1/2

I have another on the way and I have a feeling it'll be a gram lighter.

Hit today with the Vcore pro 97, Vcore 95 and the Vcore98L. I like the feel when hitting the ball with the 97 and it serves well but feels a little slow at times. I liked the 95 over the 97, easier to swing quickly and good solid feel at contact. But so far I like the Vcore 98L the best.

I generally stay in the solinco and volkl families of strings. I hit with cyclone tour and vsquare and hyper g and tour bite soft. In warmer months, I string at 50, but right now my racquest were strung at 48. Also hitting with Diadem Solistic Power and it's nice once it warms up a bit. Tough at first in colder weather.

I like 1.20 gauge strings.

curious if you can compare the comfort snd feel of the 98 with the head 360+ racquets. I use the Gravity Tour and really like it, but am curious about racquets with a bit more pop but still easy on the arm.

I played with these

360+ gravity tour is very plush and muted

360+ speed mp is very plush and less muted. But more pop indeed.

Vcore 100 v6 is more crisp and less muted than both. But still -not jarring. More pop than speed. More plush than say a PD or PA or PS or PAVS.

Hit today with the Vcore Pro 100, Vcore 95 and the Vcore 98L. For me the 95 was definitely the best racket that I have tested from Yonex so far. What a nice frame very nice feel and exceptional control, it did everything well very good for serving and I felt like I could take risks shots and the ball would still fall in.

With which versi9n of the pavs did you play and what were your thought about it?

2021version
Super sexy stick
Felt hollow though.
a lil more comfy than a PA PD PS -but still quite stiff!
More control than those three.
but still quite powerful
