Clemson Tiger tennis

I’m hoping Clemson men’s and women’s tennis can turn things around soon. So much more enjoyable to follow successful programs.

Clemson men’s and women’s soccer has been a blast this year. (Elite eight and final four respectively and both still going.) Great times at Riggs Field this season. Maybe some of that success can transfer to tennis through osmosis with Riggs being right next to the Hoke Sloan tennis center.

National title #4 for Clemson men’s soccer last night and 2nd in 3 years!

Most Clemson sports on a high right now. And previously down volleyball and women’s basketball showing signs of progress.

Safe to say men’s tennis is the bottom rung program at the moment. Let’s see what Coach Wagner can do with it.

They have to take a page out of the Michigan State book. Look for transfers and strong international recruits. There are many parallels between the two programs if you think about it. And it starts with two dynamic young coaches

Ryuhei Azuma is from Ishikawa Prefecture in Japan which is the region of the country where this recent earthquake struck very close to and is the most impacted area.

I don’t know if he was at home over there for Christmas break but hopefully he and his family have avoided anything serious.

What really helped Michigan State mens tennis was new coaching fighting for removal of scholarships restrictions as a condition to taking the job. Remember that Harry Jadun first took the assistant gig at Illinois when Gene Orlando retired, instead of taking the head job at MichSt. I do not know al the details, but I presume this was a negotiation maneuver. I recall from somewhere that MichSt admin wouldn't allow scholarships offers for out of state players, due to their significantly higher cost.

I never got that restriction anyway. Like tennis teams are very small compared to other sports. How much could a handful of our of state scholarships really be in the athletic budget at a school like Michigan State? It always hamstrung them to being Boston College light and basically condemn them to a last place Big Ten finish every year.

@optimaltennis @Clemson_tennis I always wondered why if U of Mich and Mich State were the two flagship universities for the state, how come Western Mich didnt have tennis scholarship restrictions but Mich State did. Was it a difference in philosophy between ADs at the time? Each ITA region had about 20 D1 schools. For the ******* Region, in the years right prior to the pandemic, Mich State never was in the top 10 out of that 20ish. Western Mich one year was once #5 after OH, MIch, Ill and Notre Dame and ahead of Northwestern and even had an ITA ranking of #44 one year. At the singles of the ******* Regional in one of those years, Mich State did not have a single player win a match in the R64 of the Regional while WMU had a SFist. There were usually 2-3 other MMs besides WMU in the top 10 for the ******* ahead of MSU. The MSU team was all Americans, and the WMU team was 8/10 international (ironic since WMU was one of the Kzoo boys' hosts)

Glad to hear MSU had the restrictions lifted. I remember when MSU got the Lansing ITF in Nov which meant they would probably get 3-4 guys in the MD but the best of the MSU players was around UTR 12.5. At that time (before the Accelerator program) there were guys playing 1 or 2 at top 16 unis who were still playing Qualis-guy with UTRs 13.8. I remember thinking I bet the Qualifiers who made the MD are hoping they draw one of the MSU WCs.

Obviously the Lansing area has a lot of tennis support to be able to sponsor a Future-wondered why U-Mich did try to nab one before as Illinois and OSU have hosted Futures and/or Challengers for years. Now with this scholarship change, top Americans, some transfers in the lineup, it will be interesting to see if MSU can make the NCAAs this year and provide a challenge within the Big 10 after years in its basement with Purdue.

You'd think MSU would want to compete with Mich in all sports. In light of Mich playing the football championship, I remember in 2020 that Mich State beat Mich in football. My son who was dating a girl from MSU at the time was there to watch the sofa burning the streets. Hopefully with these changes, MSU will be able to give Mich a run for its money during this rebuilding year for Mich.

Yeah I mean I don't know all the details of why MSU athletic department decided that but it certainly hindered their program for years. I actually went to one of their matches in Eats Lansing vs Notre Dam back around 2012 when they had one of their better teams. It was a pretty nice indoor facility with good viewing for each court.

Looking forward to Clemson going up there this year.'

On another note, Wissam Abderrahman and Kaetan Mehta are now on the offical roster on the Clemson athletics website, joining the team this semester. Neither win a pic yet. Abderrahman should play an important role this year. Could be in the top 3 of the lineup. He is listed as from Paris on the website rather than from Tunisia.

6-1 and 7-0 wins for the men against Brown and Citadel to start the season.

The singles lineup was
1. Azuma
2. Abderrahman
3. Vukadin
4. Mesarovic
5. Pitts
6. Aronson

Four freshmen. Aronson the only loss. Abderrahman and Vukadin both had nice comeback wins at 2 and 3 after losing close 1st sets against Brown.

Looking back at the Brown scores in comparison to how GT did vs the same team, I would say it looks decent since GT is expected to be pretty good this year. Azuma had a more dominating win at 1 than Martin and Mesarovic had a straight sets win vs a player who took a set from GT. Same Brown player won their only point vs Clemson and GT. Doubles results were pretty similar.

Vukadin and Abderrahman both had absolute wars in their matches. Three tiebreaks in both. Welcome to college tennis gentelmen.

Playing against South Carolina tomorrow. I still don’t like this selection for ITA kickoff weekend. Playing at SC was already going to happen this year. Why not wait a little bit later in the year and select a new spot for the kickoff weekend?

There was a chance to choose to go to Athens and renew that series against a weaker UGA team. And also guarantee a different matchup against either A&M or Auburn. Not sure what the benefit of possibly playing Louisville two times this year is, which is the likely 2nd matchup in Columbia.

Clemson really making a match of this! Big win for Abderrahman at 2, Mesarovic and Aronson have both forced 3rd sets to send this one to go the distance.

Gamecocks win 4-2 (almost 4-3 with Aronson having match points at 5 before the clinch).

About as good as you could have hoped for outside of actually pulling off the upset. I’m sure the gamecocks expected to just rout Clemson in front of their crowd they hyped up.

Gamecocks definitely missing Thompson for doubles as we were able to take it convincingly. Maxwell Smith can slide into the doubles specialist role on this team well , good net player. I like Abderrahman and Azuma together at 3.

In singles only Azuma and Pitts got routed. Vukadin being out was a bummer and hopefully it’s not anything long term.

Aronson and Mesarovic did a great job hanging in their 2nd sets and then stealing them to force deciding third sets, especially Aronson who was down a break in the 2nd. Mesarovic got blitzed in the 3rd and was down 5-0 quickly but battled back some to force 40-40 point at 5-2. If he won that it would have gotten interesting for Sarr to try and close it out.

Great win for Abderrahman at 2 vs Hoole in straight sets. I watched a little of that one on stream. He is very quick around the court and won most of the scrappy type points while also dictating with forehand when he had the chance.

Let’s see if this positive performance can bleed into tomorrow’s match vs Louisville or LSU.

And not as positive today vs Louisville. Fairly thorough beatdown. Aronson played well again though to rally.

A full two weeks before the next match up in East Lansing. Going to need Vukadin back pronto. He was supposed to be one of the key freshmen additions this year. If he is out for an extended period of time it will be very frustrating.

Anything is possible after all! Clemson basketball wins in the Dean Dome at UNC. Turning around the tennis program is a piece of cake compared to our basketball program actually winning in Chapel Hill. (2-60 all time)

Michigan State and Northwestern for a northern trip this weekend.

East Lansing tomorrow. Hopefully Vukadin is back in singles. He was playing in the practice pictures that were on the team Instagram.

Tough test against an MSU program that has made great strides and has shown what can be done to turn around a program in a short time. Both matches will be tough to win but I think Clemson can make at least one of the two close. Already kinda in “need a ranking boosting” win mode if the goal is to make the tournament this season.

Should be a fun match! MSU is a fairly good team this year with their top two and depth they’ve created.

Admittedly I don’t know much about Clemson tennis but will follow along!

6-1 Michigan State win.

Clemson won 3 first sets with Vukadin, Mesarovic and Aronson at 3-5 with only Mesarovic able to get the W. The MSU top 2 was too strong and Clemson kind of conceded court 6 by putting Stinchcomb there. Will need a better answer at #6 moving forward. Not sure why Whitaker can't hold it down as he was playing 3 and 4 the last two years.

Also with Azuma, I know he is playing great players at #1 but he was literally 1 match point away from the NCAAs individual tournament last year (vs Garrett Johns) and would have been easily in with that win. He was getting ranked wins at the end of last year. In theory as a senior this year he should be stepping up and moving closer to a top 40 type player. So hopefully he can start getting some ranked wins and not just lose in straights to top players.

Tough on Azuma. For selfish reasons he should drop down to the second spot in the lineup where he would win a lot more and make the NCAA singles. It's darn tough to win consistently when you are always going up against the best.

Also surprised Baris is playing line 2 for MSU. Seems like a mini stack. He is clearly one of the best players in college tennis and should be challenging himself by going up against other #1s as he probably wants to turn pro.

Yeah that's why I thought Azuma had a chance at #1 vs Hohmann, was surprised to see them but Baris at 2. Also Collard didn't play, he was behind the courts yelling for his teammates on the stream. Honestly it is a little bit tough. I was gonna wait until after the Northwestern match to see how he did in that to comment on it.

I will have to wait and watch Abderrahman play in person in the Ga.Southern and SMU matches (hard to tell on streams) to see if I agree with you on putting Azuma at 2. If he has the type of game who could threaten players on a good day then yes Azuma at #2 might be wise. But I wouldn't want to put the freshman there just to be a sacrificial lamb each match and dent his confidence if his game isn't ready for it.

I watched a portion of Vukadin/Thanos on the stream and was liking Vukadin's point construction. Looked like he had a clear goal each rally rather than just ball hitting which you will see sometimes in college. He played well in the 1st set before fading in the two tiebreaks to end the match (7-1 and 10-4).

at Northwestern tomorrow. This was the match last year that really doomed the season from the outset. A 4-3 loss at home when Clemson was in position to finish it off on a couple of courts but couldn't. I remember seeing Robbie Weiss visibly react in frustration when court 6 was losing momentum.

The season is still young but it's already at a needing a ranking boosting win stage. Running out of non-conference chances for that type of win (SMU and Memphis at home the only other remaining ones) and Northwestern would be a good win to get. It's arguably even more important for Northwestern though because they are 3-6 and need to watch out for the under .500 rule.

Would have favored Clemson but the Wildcats just bested Duke. So will be a fight for sure. And as you point out they are a desperate team too before heading into conference play where they are clearly below Ohio St, MSU, Michigan and Illinois.

Looks like I will yet again have to temper my expectations for a season. 6-1 loss against a not great Northwestern team. Gleb Bekher lost to Clemson #5 last year and wins vs #1 this year., Azuma yet to win a set this year vs the good opponents. Vukadin crushed 6-1 6-1 at #2 after moving up from 3.

What I was hoping for this year, was a season to kind of mirror the 2012 year (my first year as manager) when we were coming off several bad years but you could tell the 2012 was better. We got in position to win so many times (match points vs top 10 Tennessee, 3-0 lead vs NC State that was blown in incredible fashion among many others). but just could not get over the hump. It was a heartbreaking year but set the stage for the 2013 season which was a top 20 finish season.

So this year I would like to see signs against good teams, getting into position to win and showing clear signs of progress for next couple of years even if the wins don't 100% follow. While the SC match was encouraging, the Louisville and Northwestern matches are not good signs as they mirrored the type of losses we've seen for the last 7-8 seasons.

IDK, I just want to see something different than the social medias having to post "Battled hard" with a flex emoji while accompanying a 6-1 loss graphic.

Lots of season left of course.

You have a new coach who has won a lot. Give him some time and he’ll for sure deliver.

I just realized the 2012 season I referenced, (my junior year) when I was manager was the first year I chronicled on page 1-2 in this thread.

Some good stuff in there if I do say so myself. Brings back memories to read through. I can still picture some of the matches in my head.

Not sure what was up with all the typos though lol. I blame my old college laptop back then.

Consider those as typos battle wounds and badges of honor. We’re all here for fun and fellowship (light). Good content here and you’ve been a huge contributor to it!

The women get demolished in Columbia by a team they beat 4-3 last year (without SC’s #1).

Doubles was a rout and 1-5 were easy straight set wins by the Gamecocks. Only Anttil got a dead rubber win at 6. M

Coach Saia didn’t really bring in any new talent this year in his first year. It’s the same team as last year which barely missed the ncaas.

I watched the wins over Radford and Ga.Southern on Friday. First time seeing the new guys play in person. Solid 6-1 win over a not bad Ga.So team.

More interested to see them today vs SMU though. An absolute must win to keep the momentum heading into the ACC slate and get a ranking boosting win against a team that will likely be around the ITA 40s. One you gotta get at home.

I’m feeling a 4-3 with it coming down to the last match and we will see if one of the freshmen can step up and get the W.

“Youth day” promotion so hopefully it’ll get a decent crowd with local youth tennis players and their families with an interesting 4pm match time on a Sunday. They played outdoors on Friday with the weather around 60. It’ll be a close call today if it’s outdoor or indoor today with it expected to be around 55 at first serve time.

Yes a bigtime win. It was a very fun match to watch indoors (the Clemson indoor facility actually has better sight-lines than the outdoor facility now). Great crowd with local area youth and some stragglers from Clemson baseball finishing nearby.

Abderrahman and Damm (older brother of Martin Damm) came up big in doubles to clinch the doubles point with a nice 7-1 tiebreaker.

Azuma def Svadja 7-5 6-4 - This is the Azuma that I know he is capable of. Dictating rallies and setting up winning shots by working the angles with precise shots. This was a good battle between two low-key guys, neither one does very much of the antics that the other players do. Just went about their business without much negative or positive emotion. It got tense at the end as Azuma led 7-5 5-2 40-0 serving. Svadja saved four match points to break and then held easily. Azuma then went down 0-40 while serving for it at 5-4 and I was starting to get shades of the Garret Johns match last year. But Azume then won four points in a row, including at 40-40 when his let chord serve drew Svadaj in to net and Azuma nailed the cross court pass winner to clinch it for Clemson's 4th point (just seconds after Pitts won at 6).

I really like the new guys on this Clemson team. One thing you notice instantly is they all play an attacking style of play. Abderrahman, Vukadin, Mesarovic and Aronson all play attack first tennis which is nice to watch. Vukadin works the points more but is still more offense minded overall.

Mesarovic played very well to get a straight sets win over a ranked player at 4. Abderrahman played well despite a close 7-6(4) 7-6(8) loss to Neff, (terrible chair overrule against him on set point in the 1st set). Vukadin was massive in the big moments and gutted out a win.

Aronson won his 1st set 6-0 while every other court was knotted around 4-4 and looked to be rolling along. But then lost 6-1 6-3 the next two sets. I did not get a chance to watch much of that match down on the end but I think he just needs some experience with his aggressive style. Youngest guy on the team at only 18 years old.

I like Matt Pitts playing the #6 spot. Not the prettiest game in the world and more defensive style than the rest of the team but I think that will work better at #6 than it has in previous years where he has been forced to play over his head at #4 or even #3 in some matches. His experience and game can make for a solid #6 hole this season.

Overall a win that the team really needed for the rankings.

Men at 69 in the computer rankings and women at 32.

Sometimes these rankings are about luck as well. Most years, Brown and Ga.Southern would be near top 75 type wins but this year they are both way down in the computers so they basically don’t even count. The SMU win is the only one working for points against the 4 losses. Too bad we don’t have Charlotte, Georgia State, etc on the schedule this season. Going to be hard to pull the ranking up. Starting so low puts you behind the 8 ball.

6-1 and 7-0 wins over Furman and Wofford today. Nice to see basketball coach Brad Brownell show up to support and watch some of the match.

Now the real season begins next week with a brutal intro to the ACC slate. Five straight away matches, the four NC schools and GT.

Duke is going with Garrett Johns at #1 to make for the rematch between Johns and Azuma where Azuma had match points last year. Thought they might put Rodenas at #1 because of that.

Match starting soon at 2pm

Aronson and Pitts drop the hammer at 5 and 6 with straight sets wins. Vukadin and Mesarovic lose at 3 and 4. Clemson really should have won doubles. But still a chance as Azuma leads Johns and Abderrahman just forced a 3rd set vs Rodenas.

I did not expect there to actually be a chance to win at Duke. True heartbreaker.

I watched a decent amount on the stream. Really should have won the doubles point. Won 6-3 at 3 and lead 5-4 at #1, where Vukadin had a chance at two overheads at 15-15. The first one was good and Duke made a great retrieval. But Vukadin didn't connect well on the second one and Duke got it back deep to end up winning the point. That was the swing point as Duke took that doubles match 7-5 after that an also 7-5 on court 2.

I thought any upset hope was extinguished at that point but Azuma, Aronson and Pitts won their first sets. Aronson and Pitts rolled through to victories while Azuma had a 6-4 3-1 lead on Johns. Meanwhile, Abderrahman was rallying on court 2 after dropping the first set in a breaker.

3,4,5 and 6 all ended in routs for Duke to lead 3-2 as Duke's struggles in the bottom of the lineup continue.

Amazing win for Abderrahman over #31 Rodenas 6-7(1) 6-2 6-3. I did not expect him to comeback after losing that first set to give the team a chance to win.

But sadly, once again Azuma could not finish off Johns despite the 6-4 3-1 lead. I went to go watch the Clemson women play vs VT and several people there were watching the men on stream while in the stands for doubles of the women's match. Once Azuma gave the break back and lost the 2nd set tiebreak 7-3, we kind of all knew what was coming in the 3rd set. Huge mental edge to Johns at that point with the 3-0 head to head from previous years, especially the 7 match points he saved last year vs Azuma.

Nice recap. Really unfortunate but the glass half full view is the Tigers are right there. Wissam’s win over Rodenas, that too sort of walking away with the last two sets has to be a tremendous confidence booster. And despite his loss Azuma can believe he’s a legit #1 and will win his share. Finally, a hat tip to Coach Wagner. He’s teaching the squad how to compete and soon will show them how to win these matches against fancied opponents.

Yeah I agree. Wissam’s win was the real highlight of yesterday. He can probably get into the ITA rankings on the strength of this win over #31 and his win over Casey Hoole earlier. He won his doubles match to with Max Damm who is doing well as a doubles specialist.

Aronson routing a more highly rated freshman was great to see also. Him and Wissam are the first true Wagner recruits as Vukadin and Mesarovic were previously committed. Don’t blame either one of them for their losses yesterday. Freshmen playing very experienced Duke guys. Zhang has probably been Duke’s most solid player this year at #3.

On to UNC who is coming off a dramatic win over GT. I couldn’t decide as a Clemson fan who I wanted to win that one yesterday. Obviously GT coaches and teams are always way more likable than UNC over the years but as far as rankings and momentum, not sure which result was better for Clemson. Guess it’s a wash ultimately since we play both away from home soon.

how good are these guys ? if they are wide open to foreign players then i would assume they could get good imports to be competitive for sure

I mean since the 2000s each Clemson team has had a mix of international and American players. There hasn’t been any year since then that has swung too heavily in either direction actually. Always pretty close to 50/50.
What methods do they use to attract the top players from Europe or asia ??

4-1 loss to UNC with their #1 Jansen sitting out.

Doubles mix up did not work. Vukadin got a nice straight set win over #65 Poling. Azuma lost from a set up again.

But the earlier post I made about wanting to see signs like in the 2012 season is coming true. There are late paths to victory, as opposed to being pretty much routed in most ACC matches in previous years. At 3-1 UNC, there was a path to a win after Pitts fought back and pulled out the 2nd set breaker on 6 to make the match be decided in 3rd sets on 1,4 and 6.

Better get the positive comments out now before next weekend in Raleigh and Winston Salem.

Way out of the top 75 (below 100 on the college tennis ranks projections) now largely thanks to the bad schedule. I didn’t like the look of it when it was released and seems like I was right.

Wissam got into the singles rankings at 75. Puts him within striking distance of the individual tournament.

Only so much you can say after “moral victories” so I am instituting a self-imposed boycott on this thread until they actually get a solid win. (Boston college and college of Charleston don’t count.)
