Clemson Tiger tennis

Pretty decent showing vs Wake yesterday. Anon/Edwards upset the #1 doubles team in America at 1 doubles. We had 4 match points on court 3 to take the doubles point. Pretty brutal to lose 6 straight points from 6-2 to lose the doubles point.

Good win for Christian Harris at 6 over Gadjiev. He should be #6 for the rest of the year. He has shown way more fight in his career than Pinazo ever has at Clemson. Kalends led the 1st set over Seraphim 5-2 before giving away the set and match. Sanon took Gojo to a 3rd set breaker after pulling out the 2nd set tiebreaker. Would have been great if he had pulled out the win, that would have capped an amazing day for him in doubles and singles combined.

Overall this was the 1st real positive performance of the year considering it was against one of the national title contenders, who played their full lineup.

Must follow this up with a win over NC State on Sunday

Sounds like recruiting to me. If you don't have a consistent strong recruiting pipeline, then you will be a bottom feeder.

Recruiting really is where it's lacking. No consistent pipeline base for international talent and can't lock down elite Americans either.
South Carolina has some blue chip seniors who have played either singles or dubs at junior Grand Slams but they both are going out of state-one to Florida and one to Duke. Even two of the top three 11th graders from SC have already committed out of state-a blue chip to Wisconsin and a 5 star to Vanderbilt (dad was top 10 ATP player). The other 5 star is leaning toward Ivy, southern private school, or Big 10. If a player were to commit in state, he would probably choose USC over Clemson now anyway. Clemson did get two 5 stars who will be freshmen next year, one is a good player-almost a blue chip, the other was ranked a lot higher when he committed a year ago, but is playing better this spring. There are also some talented internationals training at those Hilton Head academies and playing junior ITFs but they also are not choosing to play in the Palmetto State. Goffi at least was at the Atlanta ITF and SC ITFs-didnt hear if Clemson coach was at either. At least one of the Big 10 coaches was at Atlanta ITF.

With the way things are at Clemson now, you dont hear blue chip and 5 star southern players talking about that school. Most of the guys have played tournaments in Clemson, and it is such a small town. I think a lot of southern players would choose Furman over Clemson TBH. Clemson should go after the Florida guys-there are so many of them; U of F gets the blue chips, UCF will get an elite mix, FL St gets internationals, and there are high 5 stars, almost blue chips from FL going to schools like Florida Atlantic. Most of the top 100 Florida juniors for the senior and junior class have played and won at least a qualifying match in a Future. The Tigers need to go looking in the Sunshine State...

Maybe the Florida and southern guys want more of a change in seasons; the first choice of a lot of those elite players are Ivy League and Big 10.

Thank you for that insight. I shared that with a few Clemson people I know who have some concern for the tennis program. (it's not many)

You're right that there should be some kind if recruiting strategy. Clemson got fortunate with the Maden brothers from Germany. Why not turn that into a profitable pipeline? Germany produces many good college players on the men's side. Perhaps the 2nd most after the USA. For Clemson things just seem to be get whoever they can, which recently has been mediocre transfers from other schools.

I think Ryan Young is a good coach but my one worry with him being hired as an assistant is that he has the same recruiting ties that Boetsch does. He doesn't seem to add anything new to the recruiting efforts. An assistant with good international ties somewhere with a track record of pulling talent from certain areas would have been a better choice. I know coaches Boetsch and Young are super passionate about Clemson and they work very hard on the practice courts. Good tactical coaches and motivators. The issue is recruiting, which happens to be the most vital part of building a program in tennis.

Yeah #1 doubles for Clemson is the only line playing well recently.

Looks like we are mixing up the lineup a bit today. Flipped 1/2, 3/4 and 5/6.

I wonder if Duke challenged Sanon at 1 and Favrot at 2. Because on the surface it doesn't seem like that would pass a challenge since Sanon has been nearly winless at #2 and Favrot has had at least had a couple wins at #1 including a couple over ranked players (Kozakov, Corbett)

Thought players could flip one line. Are these type of minor lineup change appeals ever rule against the team making the 1 line change swap?

Yannick Maden won a future in Italy. He is close to cracking the ATP top 250.

He has done better than I expected in the pros. Always a very smart player who could open up the court with some killer angels, especially from the backhand side. Not a very powerful player, not a big server and would occasionally tighten up in big moments. I would love to see him keep winning and maybe get into a grand slam or ATP draw one day.

this is really cool that u r doing this, ive been a huge clemson fan for my whole life but never got into much other than football and bball because of the lack of media coverage. your thread has got me super into their program due to their extensive coverage. Hey maybe ill play for them one day who knows

Yannick maden won his first ATP main draw match in Metz. He has Denis Istomin next.

It's great to see Yannick far surpassing guys that bested him in college. Guys like Nathan Pasha, Henrique Cunha, Jose Hernandez, Jaime Pulgar, Mikelis Libietis. And he now has a better career high ranking than what Jarmere Jenkins ever achieved, a guy he went 0-4 vs in college.

Chambers Easterling no longer on the roster. And once again I don't see the Tennessee transfer on the roster as we approach the dual season, just like last year when another Tennessee transfer failed to stay on the team for the spring. I have no idea what the deal is with that.

This years team looks to be the weakest yet. Only 9 players on the roster and 3-4 of them are D2/back up quality. Certainly not ACC caliber players. Dagostine, Quattlebaum, Rabideau are D2 quality. Van Gelderen and Pelletier aren't high quality players either.

1. Favrot
2. Baundry
3. Edwards
4. Kelaidis
5. Pelletier
6. Van Gelderen

yikes. It really sucks because I used to love being passionate about Clemson tennis and getting into those tight ACC matchups. It's hard to get into it these days with a team of this quality.

Don't worry yet. I bet they have at least two guys added to the roster in the next week.

Clemson dropped four first sets in singles vs. Presbyterian College, but came back to win three of those matches. Probably headed for a 6-1 win with an extra match being played at #7. Hopefully the first sets were just the nervousness of the first dual match of the season, particularly for new players.

Srdjan Jakovjlevic transferred to Monmouth - not sure on the reasoning.

Well it looks like there is 1 new player. Yizhou Liu who is slotted at 5 vs PC. No info on him whatsoever on the Clemson website
There is a player listed on ITF as Yi Zhou Liu (UTR 13.24) who was ranked 85 in junior ITF in 2016. Now 19, it looks like he made it into some Chinese Future MDs this year but lost in first round. If this is the right guy, he might make it to 3 in lineup this year.

My wife and me wanted to hit yesterday, so being new members of Lifetime Tennis in CLT, we did an online reservation for 4pm. We knew UNCC held home matches there, but we're a little surprised when they put us on the next court down from the match.

For 90 minutes we were next to a dubs then a singles match (we were on the 4th court away from the viewing area, so I assume we witnessed D3 and S3). Wow, some really good tennis! It was the closest I will ever come to being on court with D1 tennis (I'm old, but felt a lot older after watching that).

Well done UNCC!

Clemson vs Cornell going to doubles to decide the match. Split singles 3-3 (played singles 1st). This would actually be a big upset win for Clemson.

Might have to re-evaluate what this team can do this season. The talent level is not high but based on what I've been hearing and reading the team has a strong team chemistry and work ethic. That can be the difference in close matches sometimes as the Tigers won the 3 singles tiebreakers bs GT (each 7-5).

Last year Clemson lost at home 7-0 to GT without winning a set. And yes GT was better last year but this year's Clemson team wasn't supposed to be any better than last year's. But now it appears that it is.

The bad loss to Charlotte has been offset now by 2 good wins over Cornell and GT. At the very least this team competes and has some heart, which as we've seen in college tennis before, can go a long way when the talent level isn't as high.

Yes, that was a good away win vs GT team. Lots of close matches that went Clemson's way. GT's lines 2-4 were competitive vs #4 UGA just a week ago at College Match Day so amazing Clemson got the win. Is freshmen BP injured or just not in lineup? He was a high rated southern player-good at dubs too.

I'm not sure. He has been appearing on Clemson tennis social media at practice and "get to know the players" things. I would think he would be above at least Dagostine and possibly Kelaidis too. Maybe he will crack the lineup later in the year.

Yannick Maden eviscerates Yuki Bhambri 6-1 6-1 to qualify for Dubai.

Maden is now the 7th highest ranked former college player on the ATP.

Considering he was never a dominant force in college (highest ITA ranking was around 20), his improvement has been very impressive.
