Closest String to Alu Rough - as a cross for Gut

Hi all,

I am a recreational 3.5 player, mid 40s, using Wilson Pro staff 6.1. I've used Alu Rough and Gut hybrid last couple of years, and the first few hours of play on them is THE BEST playability, feel, spin, comfort combo I've ever found on any strings or combos.

However, I have two problems with Alu Rough:
1. It loses tension quickly
2. It notches pretty badly into the gut

So, I am looking into stringing with a SIMILAR string, with the same FEEL that lasts longer, AND not to notch as much. My first candidate was 4G Rough, or 4G, which was essentially created to be a longer lasting Alu Power... however, when I compare specs on TW University, the CLOSEST in spec to Alu Rough, is 4G Soft, while keeping tension longer. What are your thoughts on 4G Soft, or any other option?

Thanks!

I use Lux Natgut 1.30 and AluRough 1.25 at 60M57X.

I haven't noticed the tension loss really having a noticeable impact on the play until a couple dozen hours or so. The dropoff for myself is gradual enough that I adapt without realizing it until the string starts sticking, at which point the performance falls off a cliff.

I have thought of trying restring sync in lieu of AluR. but haven't done it yet.

Do you get notching? I get my Alu rough notched into gut within 2-3hrs of play! But it's mostly poly cross locked into the gut, the gut still moves around on top of the poly.

Mine loses tension in maybe 6hrs or so, it just loses the POP, and the sound of hitting the ball changes dramatically.

4g soft is really an excellent string. I've used it a lot in full bed but never with gut. I could see it having a slightly different feel than alu (whether good or bad) but definitely having a lot longer duration

I don't get notching on gut, or don't notice if I do. I often get notching on full poly setups.

Have you tried luxilon natural gut?

Kirschbaum max power. What you need is a round slick poly if you want much less notching and string life. You can also try Gosen AK pro series. Syn gut but hard and slippery almost like poly.
