Closest string to Luxilon Alu Power Rough

Hey friends,

I'm looking for some budget advice. I've used Volkl Cyclone, Alu Power, Gamma Polys, and a few other random strings, but none of them really compare to the 'feel' I get with Alu Power Rough. I love to string it at a higher tension (around 57lbs); it feels so plush and controlled. It feels a little softer and more spin friend than the Volkl or Gamma smooth polys I tried.

I'm almost through my 100m Alu Rough reel, is there anything remotely close to that feel on a budget level? If there is a reel that's less than half the alu rough, I wouldn't mind that even if it lasted half as long. I browsed the comparisons to Alu Power threads, but would love to hear more specifically about Alu Power Rough.

Thanks! I'm planning on either doing full poly bed, or hybrid with OGSM 17.

Unfortunately there is not. So many companies have tried to replicate the way Alu Power feels and plays and all have failed. It's expensive yes... but there's a reason why. Like many others I too searched for strings that played like Alu. After having played at least 20 different smooth, shaped, and textured poly's I decided one day that the quest I was on was a complete waste of time and money. I play league and tournaments. So it's very important to me to feel confident about my equipment. I decided that feeling confident about my epuipment and playing well was worth the extra couple bucks a week.

Solinco Revolution. It's intended IMO as an alu power fighter. To me, it feels slightly softer than alu rough, though I'm more in the low to mid 50's tension range. Revolution is far more arm friendly, has similar power and longevity, easier to access spin on partial shots, and costs less than half as much for a reel.

Try a pack first perhaps. You also have to like blue...

Kirschbaum Max Power Rough?

Great! I bought 40 packs. ;)

55 packs, =D

But seriously, I'll give those a try.

I compared OGSM17 / Alu Rough in my Six.One 95s to a full bed of Alu Rough in the same racquet today. Surprisingly, the Hybrid didn't really feel that much softer or more powerful. The main thing I noticed is that I just had way less topspin with the syn gut mains / poly hybrid. It actually made for some nice flat shots. I'll mix and match both at my USTA match this Sunday.

The prevailing approach IMO is to put the poly in the mains in that type of setup. Your syn gut can also get ripped up fairly quickly. The reason the power doesn't feel significantly different is that the stiffer poly is still supporting the string bed at the same initial stiffness. The problem with trying to create a softer bed with a hybrid of significantly different string stiffness is that the stiffer string will loose tension radically fast since it's providing virtually all the support.

I see. So, you would pretty much flip-flop those strings, use a different tension set up, something else? I'm going to hit with a partner soon, so I can give more impressions on the set up.

Is Alu power spin similar to the rough? Because when I tried spin out, I thought it was the stiffest poly I've ever used. Very uncomfortable.

People do it both ways depending on what they are looking for in terms on launch angle and spin generation. The poly mains approach is usually considered to be longer lasting.
Any time you hybrid 2 strings with significantly different stiffness (you can find that in the TW database for a lot of strings) you are going to have the same effect more or less. The only oddity is the use of real gut in mains. Gut has very low stiffness...
You can mitigate the offset by increasing the multi's tension or by using a "hybrid" multi like Spiraltek or Prince Premier Control.

JBH,

I've was using poly/multi hybrids for my own 16x19 frames until 2013 when I switched to a 16x15 Wilson Steam 99S, which only works with full poly or gut/poly.

Three poly / multi hybrids I use for string breakers are :

WC SilverString / PPC 15g
Solinco Revolution / PPC 15g
HeadHawk / PPC 15g

16g multi crosses is two thin for string breakers. My goal for players is to get three weeks per frame, to help save them some money. I don't string to make a living, but rather to give my string breaking buddies a break and save them some money.

Hope this helps you: TW has 15g PPC reels for $90 if you buy two reels. I just got two 660' 15g reels delivered yesterday. $2.5 per cross :)

660' / 18 ' per cross = 36 1/2 sets per reel. $90/ 36 = $2.5 per PP Control cross.
