Co poly wit natural gut?

hi everyone this is my first thread
i wanna ask you if the hybrid of co poly in the mains and natural gut in crosses its ok?

That's a great hybrid. Go for it.

I've had good luck going about 2-3 lb. tighter in the crosses with this hybrid.

Its a great idea to use a co poly in the mains and natural gut in the crosses. Just don't use natural gut in the mains and a co poly in the crosses because it will eat your strings like a bag of farts.

I use natural gut in the mains and have used several copoly's in the crosses. They don't eat your strings. Quite the opposite. Gut is very elastic. By putting a stiffer string in the crosses (I string the crosses 5# lower when using a copoly), the gut rarely reaches its maximum stretch limit, so it lasts longer. Plus, copoly's (or poly's for that matter) keep the gut from moving around as much.

Steve, I use the same setup in 2 of my RACQUETS - and it's my favorite hybrid for the days, where I just need a nice powerfull but controlled and soft feeling stringbed.

I do also plan on going back to the reverse hybrid setup, because I sometimes feel like I could need a bit more control and muteness in my stringbed, so will probably have 2 racquets with the reverse setup in my bag also.

How long do you feel the playability of your GUT MAINS/CO-POLY CROSS HYBRID lasts and what about the durability of this hybrid ?

Thanks :)

I personally feel that you get more spin and power with poly mains and gut crosses. Playability is about the same, but ball pocketing seems better with the gut in the crosses.

I have played extensively with both hybrids and I can honestly say that I get more power, pocketing, spin, and feel with gut in the crosses.

I think people just assume that since they put gut in the "main" strings, that the "main" feel will be due to the gut. But from side-by-side comparisons between hybrids both ways, I personally believe that the opposite is true. Gut in the crosses is just better all around.

You say, you have played with both hybrid combinations of Nat gut/Co Poly - how was the tension maintenance in the two hybrids ?
Was the tension stability better with Nat gut in the mains or Nat gut in the crosses for you ?

Like Tony, I've put the strings in both ways in the same racket. I like the way natural gut plays, so I find having gut in the mains plays best for me. If you like the way poly's feel, then having a poly in the mains will probably suit you better. Personally, I get more spin, power and feel with gut in the mains. You have to remember though, that I drop the tension of the poly by 5#, whether in the mains or the crosses. I would have to assume that Tony prefers a poly over a gut string job too. Nothing wrong with that. I just prefer the softer feel of how gut plays, and I felt that having gut in the mains felt more like gut than when I had gut in the crosses.

Hey guys,

What would you recommend for a poly cross to match with gut in the mains? I currently using VS gut at 58lbs on my Pro Staff KPS 88 and would like to try something different. Also, what tension would you suggest?

If it's a 16g poly, I'd go down 5#. If it's one of the new 17L or 18g poly's, I'd only go down about 3#. Keep your gut at the same tension.

My theory would be that the crosses are shorter, so having the ploy as the crosses would make the racquet feel stiffer than the other way around.

Well, since the crosses are responsible for comfort, feel, and power, it's probably not a bad theory. The mains provide spin and control by moderating the power of the crosses.

Again, I can't rationalize any reason why having poly in the mains would make the stringbed stiffer and more "poly-like" as opposed to having poly in the crosses. Everything I've experienced says exactly the opposite. The crosses dictate the power, comfort, and feel of the stringbed, not the mains.
