Coach Patrick Mouratoglou

Coach Patrick Mouratoglou has been an inspiration to Serena Williams since 2012. Serena has won 8 majors in less than 4 years and may win USO this year. His former students include Grigor Dimitrov, Marcos Baghdatis, Laura Robson and etc. Does anyone know his tennis background? Was he a former ATP player? Is he like a Nick Bolleteiri type of coach (non former player coach)? I am sure Serena has helped his tennis academy business a lot in the past few years.

He is the son of a wealth businessman from France who owns an energy company. Patrick never played tennis but his passion was to be a tennis coach. He started his own academy in 1996 and even though some prominent players have been under his wing, he has never had any grassroots success with his charges in the traidtional sense of him making them champions. His best success came from making them more consistent and climbing them through the rankings his success was Yanina Wickmayer and Arvane Rezai. He was fortunate to have had Serena ask him to coach her because she was panicking after 1st round French Open loss and needed change. His success came from Serena's work ethic and through her rise and legacy chasing, Patrick has become the most popular tennis coach on the WTA, building his own academy, publishing his book and having his own show on Eurosport.
