Coaches Hot Seat

MTSU has lost both the women's head and assistant coaches.

HC Shelley Godwin left to be an AC on the Alabama's women's team. She played there and grew up in Alabama.

I've heard AC Matt Langley is leaving to be AC of men's tennis at Arizona State....but can't find any evidence ASU has a men's team?!?!

Maybe they are planning to start it back up. That would be excellent news!
I had heard ASU was going to start up their program a couple months ago but passed it off until I heard more. Given this news and that of my source in the Phoenix area this looks like it's trending to become a reality.

BTW, MTSU is opening their new indoor facility today. Supposed to be first class.

It is!
I just attended the grand opening. Four courts on each side (8 total) with a two-story backbone down the middle. Offices, utilities, and lockerrooms on the first floor. Second floor is open mezzanine with viewing of all eight courts.

It's joint city and university. We're all very excited. MTSU already has the women's conference tournament scheduled here next spring and the men the following year. We're anticipating it will help us get USTA events at various levels.

Wow. And it says these courts will be open to the public. That's impressive but that's A LOT of upkeep. I'm not sure how long they're going to allow that if the cost to play indoors doesn't generate enough cash to cover the maintenance.

The courts are public and run by the city. The outdoor courts are surprisingly busy during weekdays...a lot of doubles being played by people with time on their hands here. I believe it will be successful.

Got it. I don't know if that's the norm but all of the public university tennis centers I've visited didn't allow general public access on a regular basis. And the indoor courts, if available, were exclusively for the use of tennis team members so not even the general student body was allowed to use them.

I just heard MTSU is also losing an AC men's coach (Jordan Smith). Going to Kansas women's HC?
Dude that's the second time you mistook a coach moving to another school. Jordan is going to Kansas State Women, will be the assistant coach.

Sergiy Belov head coach of Winthrop was forced to resign due to visa issues a year after taking home the conference title.

From what I am hearing from a guy I know who has connections at Winthrop, Winthrop is too blame for this. They were not willing to help out Belov. Inexcusable from Winthrop if true

Is there a fee to play? Either indoors or outdoors?

The stadium courts are reserved for the team only but there 12 courts available behind the stadium courts that anyone can use at any time. The indoor courts are also open to the public using certain hours. No fee

I noticed his name in qualies of the Decatur Illinois Future - he lost in 1st round.

I know a recent graduate. From what she told me, this move is overdue.
I know a coach that told me he was speaking with her about his need to schedule more matches and wanted to play her team. She said she would only play them at home. He said "great name the date" she immediately squirmed and said she'd get back with him. Then went into radio silence hiding mode and never scheduled. Weak

He is joking but should he be? Boland's edge is starting to fade a little bit. He is no longer the intimidating coach he used to be and his recruiting suffers from it, you can tell. His recent recruits have been lesser quality. Quitakowski is good but his other American recruits have been a disappointment.

Word around Charlottesville is that last year's results have bought one more year for Brian Boland, but no doubt he is on a short leash. :)

To suggest that Boland is anywhere close to the hot seat does not make any sense at all. He took a program thay was mediocre before he got there and has turned it in to a powerhouse rivaling the best programs in history. On top of that, the support he receives from the tennis community in Charlottesville is amazing. Although I don't know how he has been able to recruit such a deep roster of talent within the rules, I am unaware of any violations, or even accusations. As far as I know the program is clean, successful and raises a ton of money compares to a lot of programs. The school is also now starting a fund raising program to build a new outdoor facility under Boland's leadership. ( If you have ever been to Snyder, I don't think you will argue that it is nothing special, although it is very intimate). Short of some type of scandal I would say Boland's job is pretty safe.

I heard William and Mary was Jeff Kader's if he wanted it.
Sounded like Denver had a very strong pool of finalists with several high profile Asst/Assoc. Coaches coming for interviews.

If Denver was smart and serious about their new coach, they would put a full court press on Jeff Salzenstein. Not sure if he'd be interested, but he lives in the area and would be an outstanding college coach day one.

Jeff was an unbelievable player, no doubt, but that does not necessarily translate to unbelievable coaching ability. I don't know if he'd be able to elevate the program but based on some of the names and personalities I've heard express interest in the job, Denver will be fine with whatever route they choose. UVa doesn't want Boland? We'll gladly take him ;)

He can coach. Not even sure if he would be interested in adding college coaching responsibilities to what appears to be his successful current online coaching and in person coaching business. DU tennis may just be a big waste of time for Jeff. You're right DU should focus on finding the best re-treds available.

Somehow we missed the hiring of Paajanen at Detroit Mercy toward the end of July. Here is the link. http://www.detroittitans.com/news/2015/7/27/WTEN_0727154803.aspx

Also, another opening is Men's and Women's job at Eastern Illinois. Their coach took the Women's job at D3 Methodist.

Surprised at how long many of theses D1 positions have been open and now many universities are getting back in session. I believe it has a negative impact on college tennis as it is difficult for a coach to come in September 1st to lead program. The players also may look to transfer or are not as committed knowing they do not have a coach in place. Then there is a ripple affect by losing assistant coaches midyear or to smaller schools (D2, NAIA, JUCO) by their coaches departing in the middle of a season looking to move up the coaching ranks. Wish more of these hirings would occur in June and July.

Most of the college tennis coaching jobs don't pay very much. Many of the DI jobs come with expectations to win or at the least compete well, some more than others. The jobs also have a good amount of work and responsibility. The players are students and care for them can be 24x7. When the opportunity comes for better positions, many coaches at smaller lesser paying programs leave for a better position at the first chance. Can't blame anyone for trying to make a better life for themselves and their family.

New MTSU men's assistant, Danny Leitner (former #1 from s. Alabama) will be a top notch AC! Met him this summer. Bright future for him in coaching.

Looking at the latest rankings, surely Shelton at Florida must be feeling the heat with his team down in the mid 20's.He has taken the program downhill since he took over. Coach Jackson who was fired for for being consistently top 16 has now got Arkansas from nowhere to 13. Will UF be looking for another new coach next year ??

Shelton was a master of the stacked lineup while with the Georgia Tech women. Apparently, he can't get away with it on the mens side.

That's correct. People who say Shelton is fine because Florida is close and young and all of that forget why he was brought in in the first place. Florida wanted their men's team to get to the same level as their women's, a national title contending type of team. Shelton's teams have been screwing around in the 20s and 30s and have not been near a top 10 level, let alone a title contending level.

Too narrow of a recruiting base. It's great for a school like ETSU but I don't think he would be anymore succesful at a big school. His recruiting would not be greatly improved by a move to somewhere like Auburn or Clemson or something.
I know he likes Spanish speaking players. While they have exceptions every now and then South American and Spanish players are typical on their roster. Maybe at a bigger school he would get better players from the same place. Given he's a graduate of ETSU and came back there after his pro playing days were over, it's a safe bet to guess he likes Johnson City.
