Penn State had a nice lead that evaporated but now they are up 26-14. I think the winner of this game should be #3 in the polls bumping my Tigers down one more spot.

Sad night for @Mike Bulgakov as his beloved Cal Golden Bears did not play like Jack Nicklaus and dropped from the unbeaten ranks at the hands of Oregon. What the Ducks happened, Mike???
Damn you, Nike! Damn you, Phil Knight! Oregon is loaded with talented fast guys and have a projected first quarterback drafted next year in Justin Herbert. New flashy uniforms for every game (how can a team have thirty uniforms for one season?), an excess of money, and great facilities keeps recruits coming. Even the cheerleading team is said to be loaded with talent by Pac12 experts.

"Knight has been a mega-donor for the University of Oregon academically and also athletically. He's helped usher the Ducks from a doormat football program struggling to stay near .500 football in the 1980s to a rising program in the 1990s, to one of the nation's most established programs in the 2000s.

Recently, however, the Ducks have been in a bit of a tailspin. The Ducks elected to fire Mark Helfrich from Oregon after the Ducks went 4-8 during the 2016 football season. In came Willie Taggart for the 2017 season. Despite turning the program around and winning seven games in the regular season, Taggart bolted from the Duck program to Florida State in less than one full year on the job.

The Ducks quickly searched for a replacement and within a week decided to hire from within, promoting offensive coordinator Mario Cristobal to head coach"

Cal is platooning between two quarterbacks, and neither established a rhythm. They can't currently recruit the depth of teams like Oregon, after tightening things up after loose standards during their top 10 years. Alumni were very critical after it was revealed the team had one of the lowest graduation rates in the country.

All that being said, a beautiful evening for college football at my favorite football venue in the country. Go Bears!

Going back as far as Tedford (when the low grad rates happened) you guys are intertwined with Oregon. Before QB guru Ted came to Berkeley he was OC in Eugene. Now, your head coach Justin Wilcox was born there and played high school and college there. He's also a former defensive back/coach/coordinator so Cal is going the opposite direction from Tedford and, more recently, Sonny Dykes. I wouldn't expect top high school QB talent that grows on trees in NorCal will have Berkeley high on the list with this change.

It's a shame to see the alma mater of Joe Kapp, Aaron Rodgers, Jared Goff move away from being QB University. After all, the brain trust available in the Nobel Prize-laden physics department there should be tapped to develop and train Cal QBs to throw the optimal spin/trajectories of the oblate spheroid pigskin inflated to 12.5-13.5 psi (unless you're a NorCal raised cheater that dissed Berkeley in favor of Ann Arbor).

Cal will always have a tough time recruiting and academic standards aren't to blame. Stanford, UCLA (though not this year :)) and USC are doing just fine in the PAC. I read an interview with Sonny Dykes years ago and he discussed the recruiting challenges. The Uni speaks for itself and Berkeley is a great town but it just doesn't appeal to blue chip recruits. He made the comment that every time he got a good kid on campus, there were 3-4 demonstrations going on, a couple of kids were camped out in a tree protesting deforestation and then there's the surrounding area. Bama, UCLA, Georgia, etc. are idyllic college campuses/towns. Berkeley can look like a third world country. The parks and streets are just full of transients these days. Honestly, it's hard to explain unless you've seen it. On top of that, the facilities aren't up to par with the big dogs in their own conference and around the country. My father-in-law and both his daughters are UCB grads and one of his bucket list items is to see Cal play in the Rose Bowl. Unfortunately, I don't think it's going to happen in his lifetime.

Va Tech gets back on track against Duke. :)

UK off to their best start since I was in diapers...and I'm 43!! :) Tough game coming up at College Station next week but very winnable games against Vandy and Mizzou after that, setting up a showdown with the JoJah Bulldawgs!! No reason they shouldn't beat Tennessee or the 'Ville this year. I may be getting ahead of myself but the Cats should finish with no more than 2 losses. They are just physically dominating teams right now, which is nice to see after so much futility. UK a football school? No but for now it is!

New coaches Scott Frost and Chip Kelly a combined 0-8! Never would have predicted that.

Notre Dame and WVU with very solid wins.

What curse has Syracuse placed on Clemson? Confusing, to say the least.

What a track meet in Allas...no D there as The Red River Battle looks to be headed into the 80 plus-point total range...45-24 Texas with a full quarter to play!

48-45 Texas on a 40-yard FG with nine seconds left. Final.

OU drops from the unbeatens. WVU should be top dog in the Big 12. They won today 38-22 over Kansas.

Well except for those last two series’
What a game!

Sure feels good to come away with a win in such a good game.

Texas’ Defense looked so good for 3 qtrs...two bad series and that incredible play from the OU QB...

Whew...damn good game

From 27-7 exhilaration to 28-27 heartbreak. Still looking for that complete four quarters from my Noles.:(
45 yards of second half offense, ouch. I thought that "not" backwards pass was a bad call but I was watching on my phone. What say you?

I was watching off and on from the sidewalk outside The Ale House so my view was worse than your phone access.

We didn't lose because of one play though. That punt return TD should have spurred the defense to shut the Canes down. Instead they relaxed and momentum shifted from that drive forward. They played great for four quarters...the last half last week and the first half today. We're 1-1 as a result and 3-3 overall with two bunnies and one of those bunnies (Samford ) could have won. A work in progress but a regression today.

Florida overcame a 21-3 deficit with a strong second half and won 37-27.

Auburn's season is now officially a disaster after losing to a bad Tennessee team.

UCF trails 17-7at the end of one quarter in Memphis.

Notre Dame is down 7-6 at the half to Pitt.

UCF down 30-17 at halftime...can't stop the rushing offense of Memphis.

LSU is stoning Georgia 16-0 nearing halftime. Fromm is 5-16 for 57 yards.

Pitt still leads Notre Dame 14-12 early in the fourth quarter.

ND ekes out a 19-14 win at home to a weak Pitt team. The committee won't be awarding style points for that display AND it gives me hope my Noles can at least be competitive if not win next month in South Bend.

UCF has fixed the leaky defensive holes and now trail by just 6, 30-24 at the start of the fourth quarter but Memphis is near the red zone.

LSU still dominating the Dawgs, 19-3 with Georgia near the red zone close to the end of the third quarter.

@Federer and Del Potro 's Spartans hanging tough with PSU, 14-14 in the fourth.

Later on, while @Mike Bulgakov 's Golden Bears try to axe the Bruins in Berkeley, we also should cue up some Bob Marley for the Buffaloes-Trojans...sounds like a munchie fueled safe sex party to me with reggae in the background. Perfect for Snoop Dogg but his son has left UCLA's football program so he has no dogg in either fight.

UCF squeaked out a 31-30 win; Georgia and PSU above them have lost; WVU above them is losing badly. If they had won convincingly they would move up big time. Instead the Power 5 winners (Texas, LSU, Michigan, Florida) and Georgia will clog up their lane from the #10 spot. The Oregon rally over Washington helps a bit. Still, they wasted a golden opportunity to progress.

It won't matter in the end unless Tua at Alabama gets injured. They showed a stat tonight where Baker Mayfield had the highest QB rating last year of 198 something. Tua was at 250 so far this year! Bama is already the best or second at all the other positions. #TheRaceToSecondPlace

Not a happy night in the @Mike Bulgakov household after a 37-7 spanking of the Golden Bears by previously winless UCLA.

Just look at my avatar for a hint as to my reaction when I saw that score!

I am not feeling very well...

Cal has looked bad before, but that's about as bad as it gets. Any eligibility left, @stringertom? I hear local bon vivant LeeD can throw a football over Mt Diablo from Oakland. Where is he?

I'm in seventh heaven for two reasons:

1. My Noles finally played a complete game of sorts...after spotting Wake Forest a 10-0 lead it was all FSU until a meaningless TD late in a 38-17 win. The defense held Wake scoreless on 11 possessions in between the first and fourth quarter scores. Cam Akers ran well (98 yards, 2 TDs) and Deandre Francois passed for 353 yards and 2 TDs.

2. Urban Tonedeaf is getting biotch slapped as the classless hypocrite he is should be treated. Purdue is up 35-20 with four minutes left.

In the case of The Khaki Man, he fits the "enemy of my enemy is my friend." It's not quite to the point of FDR/Churchill embracing Stalin but it's real close.

Florida/Georgia this year is even bigger than normal. There’s a lot on the line, especially for UF due to their previous loss to @Kevin T ’s Wildcats, the third horse in the SEC East race.

Salad days in the Blue Grass state, Tom. :)

UK keeps beating people up physically. Florida playing much better but how can they be ranked #9 to my Cats #12? Both with 1 loss, both played a couple of patsies and both have a few solid SEC wins. Big win over LSU by UF but UK beat the Gators head to head. And UK's loss was a very close OT game in College Station.

Dan Patrick mentioned it this morning and I agree...Urban doesn't look well. He's pale and looks like he's about to pass out at times. I know it's hard lying and keeping secrets all the time but he's looking rough.

Clemson delivering the worst home loss to FSU of all time. I haven't seen very much of FSU this year but they appear to be poorly coached. So many mistakes and stupid penalites. Dabo struggled at first and I didn't think he was the man for the job. So maybe Willie will prove this doubter wrong with time.

Worst PI call to change the outcome of a game since the OSU/Miami Fiesta Bowl’03 national championship game. Sorry, @Kevin T but UK needed the twelfth man in stripes to secure that comeback vs Mizzou.

Sometimes u need those breaks, Tom. [emoji3] Cardiac Cats are killing me this season. Helps ease the pain of another Hokie turd. On the rival side, UVA having its best season in many moons and only needs to handle Pitt and beat Va Tech to lock up the Coastal Division.

Talking heads at ESPN calling the first poll this week to be:

1. Alabama
2. Clemson
3. LSU
4. Notre Dame

First alternates in case of stumbles: Michigan and Georgia.

Obviously, Week 2 of the poll will have a shakeup as a result of Bama visiting LSU so it will be very important how those two at #5-6 react. Georgia must visit Kentucky with the SEC East title on the line for the winner. Michigan hosts another powerhouse when Penn State visits The Big House.

What do you guys think?

Note: the jinx of being the initial #3 may hold true again...not once has that #3 made the Final Four.

Taking the luster off the first rankings announcement, the University of Maryland Board of Regents chose Tuesday to announce the reinstatement of AD Damon Evans and HC DJ Durkin following a thorough investigation of the practice field incident that led to the death of OL Jordan McNair this summer.

Backlash to this decision was thorough and swift, leading to a reversal of fortune for at least Durkin, who was fired today but without cause, a huge benefit in the neighborhood of $5.3million to Durkin as he will now be paid the buyout clause in his contract.

So a jerk of a coach with little success on the field basically gets paid handsomely to get away with manslaughter.

No word on AD Evans status but he’s no stranger to trouble...he lost his job as AD at Georgia eight years ago after a DUI arrest. Maryland gave him a second chance to rebuild his career in 2014 as an associate AD before he was promoted this spring.

There’s some irony that the one alum of a school whose program is hitting rock bottom has to bump this thread. My God, did Jimbo totally leave the cupboard bare to just escape giving up 50 on back to back weeks by two points???

In other better news, Surfer Boy is the real deal at QB for Clemson and Khaki Man has the cream in the Big Ten. Notre Dame stays unbeaten. Alabama continues to Roll Tide. Georgia will be their opponent in the SEC Championship Game, sorry @Kevin T . Florida is still hungover from The Cocktail Party beating.

Week 2 of the poll should be:

1. Satanbama

2. Clemson

3. Notre Dame

4. Michigan

I believe Surfer Boy was only 8-12 today and yanked early in the 3rd. Our backup QB had more TDs. When a different defensive lineman scores in consecutive weeks on jumbo packages and then the coach's son who is a receiver at the bottom of the depth chart scores the final TD, you had a good game.

I got to watch Alabama for the first time tonight. I was thinking that Bama only scored 2 more than UF against LSU, so that is a positive right? Unfortunately, I watched their defense abuse LSU which reminded me of what they did to Clemson last year. I think Clemson would have to play a perfect game (like we did 2 years ago) to beat them again. Blanking a #3, once beaten team deep in the season on their field is just downright impressive and they are absolutely the team to beat.

Louisville was a sieve on rush defense! Twelve different Tigers carried the ball but none with more than 8 carries.

Kevin is a sad Hokie and Wildcat today. [emoji20] Hokies basically the team we thought they would be preseason, before that tease of a FSU win.

Dawg’s o line just wore UK’s D down. They were toast by the 3rd. Things definitely looking up in Lexington but Ga, Bama are another level.

Bama Clemson re-rematch? Michigan looking better and better. PAC and Big 12 just not at their level. Still not convinced about Norte Dame.

Sorry, Tom. Your Noles are looking like my Cats in the Billie Gillespie era.
