College players in US summer Futures and Challengers

Can he take the fall off and then decide after Open and fall Challengers?

He could. Any student at U of Florida can miss up to 2 consecutive semesters before having to re-apply for admission. I would assume that he's not enrolled in any classes this Summer so the Fall semester would the last semester he can miss before having to re-apply.

There are rules and there are ways to workaround "rules". Almost all universities normally gives out "wavers" to students for special circumstances, and this is one of them.

Ben Shelton got a WC into Atlanta 250 MD.

Three tournaments in a row for Ben. he's already played ten matches since July 11th. I think this Atlanta tournament could be tough to get ready for.

in addition a kid name Bruno Kuzuhara received a wild card too. has anyone seen him play?

Keep those WCs coming - dude is going to be ranked like #3 in the world by the time he steps back on campus

2024 CYGS - book it

(my best Feddie impression)
LOL and Fed will invite him to Laver Cup in London...Seriously Ben does have a chance for 1st/2nd rd wins. Ben had the TB set with Tim Van R, and Van R had wins at Wdon vs two top 30s. When Chris Eubanks was a rising senior, he got a WC into MD at ATL 250 (not his 1st) but I think he won 2 MD rounds (beat Fritz) and then turned pro. Consider that Trent Bryde got a set off a Nakishima summer of 21 (then cratered in SEC-went from UTR 14+ to high 12s), and in 2019 Cole Gromley (GT) had a 6-7 1st set vs Humbert who was top 100 at the time-the college boys have a history of bringing their A game to ATL250 (TD gives a UGA or GT player a MD WC each year-Ben got an extra as Andres Martin is the GT WC). With Ben Shelton's talent and experience from NCAA and Challenger wins, he could win his 1st round, esp if he draws a Qualifier. The top 4 seeds get a bye in 1st rd. The tourney does look tougher than some years-12 guys in top 50, 6 more in tough 75 including Murray. Maybe Ben will beat a Q in the MD 1st rd, get Kyrgios in the 2nd who implodes, and then Ben reaches QFs. However, Krygios is usually behaved in ATL; I went to one of his matches and cant remember anything about it except the metal benches were extremely hot-I'd remember if he'd gone mental. Would be legend if Ben got to play Murray. With the Shelton GT connections, Ben will have plenty of support plus maybe he will get invited to an impromptu hoops game-one year Fritz, Paul, Kyrgios, and Opelka played some bball on GT courts, and the tourney FB posted video. Extra bonus:$7.6K+ for just playing the 1st rd, even if he loses-12.4K if he wins. Would fund some fall trips. I think with ITA players can net full year expenses vs earnings if he does go back to school. Now if he wins a round at US Open, guess he takes the $ and runs, or has to turn it down to return to Gatorland. Players have to spend it all on tennis related stuff-travel, coaching (but not coach's travel expenses), etc.

M25 Champaign number of our college guys playing
MD R1 Nathan Ponwith (alumini Arizon State) defeated Jo Munday (Tennessee) and was in turn defeated by former hand spitter Patrick Kypson.

I see Dostanic (part of USTA Collegiate Team) still had to go through Qualis but he has made it to SFs (will play Kypson). I dont think many fans realize that even top 1 or 2 players from top 20 teams like Monday and Dostanic may have to start in Future MD without WCs until they play enough events to grow their ranking. Dostanic had reached finals of Tulsa a few weeks ago but still was in Qualis for Champaign. However Dostanic got the joke match in Qualis-he drew a 30 year old overweight UTR 4 player who got in as an alternate-quick 0,0 in his 1st rd of Qualis. Monday had a bye-there were 101 alternates at the freeze date a couple days ahead, and yet they had an open spot 1st day of Qs. Carpe diem college guys-if you are in top 25 for alternates at the freeze, get in your car and drive. Anybody on list could have gotten that last spot-that's why you have 0,0 matches when the college playing alternates dont show up.

On another note, Kingsley (another on USTA collegiate team) early in 3rd set of his QF match, The tourney is in illinois-why are all the Big 10 players but CK gone-13 guys with Big10 connections in MD-mostly Illinois and OSU. Hope CK wins-if so he will play Quinn in SFs. No Mich guys-several of the US Mich players are instead playing the UTR PTT event that starts Sunday-the top 2 seeds are Mich players or commits-likely one will bring home $3600 and the other $2k-not bad commuting from your apt

Interesting footnote on Eduardo Nava (Wake/TCU) and Kingsley match. CK did win in 3. Eduardo's brother Diego (UTR 12.44) who was a grad student at Xavier had a surprise dual match win vs CK (13.99) in straights in Jan '22. Xavier lost to OSU 1-6.

Knowing his parents, I would seriously doubt they would try and flout the system. The original question I answered was regarding whether he could skip being enrolled in classes this Fall but return to the team in Spring 2023. Based on the number of semesters he's not been enrolled already (which I'm assuming is 1 so far), he could sit out of classes this Fall without having to go through any additional steps to be re-admitted when the Spring season comes around.

Most of the Rome matches were fairly short. 10 hours of play for 7 wins. Outside of the 2 1/2 hr match vs Nanda on 7/12, his Rome average match was 1:15. Now at Indy he had a 1:19 match vs Rinky and then Tim Van R retired after an hour of play. If Ben serves well and wins quick holds, he should be OK for next week. Hope he has less DFs today. College night at ATL 250 is Tuesday so hopefully he will play 1st rd Tues vs Monday.

'what's the advantage for him playing with the team in 2023?

it's the combination of mental and physical fatigue. Has he ever played this many matches in short period of time? I just don't want him to overextend himself or get injured. I'm sure his father is managing his schedule. i'm just a tad bit worried with three weeks in a row.

ncaa champion not doing so good

??? he won the first set in a TB and is up a break in first game of second set ???

he's half an hour from passing wawrinka and pulling even w querrey in the rankings, i think he'll take it as someone who is the same age most college sophomores and hasn't turned pro yet

oh, and assuming he wins today, he'll also be more than 600 spots higher in the ATP rankings than Fery

ask your boy if he'd rather by 888 or 279

Fery will likely never be 279, in his life, and Shelton is doing it in no time as a lets-have-some-fun-and-see-how-this-goes summer before heading back to school

Shelton is a tough kid

serving up 3-2 in the second, 15-30, ump overrules a Purcell shot that was initially called out by the linesman on the far sideline - I couldn't tell if ball was in or not, but a bold overrule that far away from the chair, and Shelton shakes it off after a brief argument to win the next four points from 15-40 to hold

7-6,6-4

basically the same seminfinals group as last week, Kova is the only different face in the semis from the Rome GA Challenger, and he only missed out last week because Shelton edged him in the quarters

Kova likely out for some revenge tomorrow, winning again in straights will be tough

Yibing Wu is killing fools again this week, and has to be the favorite for another title

Impressive win today for Ben.

LOL,, he beat a doubles player today. this is really non factor. he needs to beat guys like Alcarez to prove he can play in the tour

Kova will be really going for it to improve or at least maintain his standings for the US Open Wild Card Challenge. https://www.usta.com/en/home/pro/pr...hallenge-returns--will-begin-in-mid-july.html Now Ben already has his wC from winning NCAAs. I thought I heard that Ben is #1 and Kova #2 in the current standings (if anyone knows of a link to standings please reply with it) but the decision is based on best 3 results over 5 weeks. I am somewhat rooting for Alex to edge Ben in 2 this time so Ben will be more rested for ATL 250 and Alex remains a top contender for that US open WC. College tennis wins if both Ben and Kova end up in US Open MD. If Ben were to come in 1st in the challenge (which he could if he earns points in AT:), this WC would go to the US player in 2nd place

new toy for you to play with if you dare https://insights.universaltennis.com/h2h#
per this UTR tool in beta test, Fery would have 13% chance of beating Max Purcell or Ben Shelton. In looking at common opponents, Ben was 15-1 and Fery was 6-5. UTR had the Shelton match at Purcell (51) and Shelton (49) so Ben played well to win in 2 today. Fery against the rest of the USTA Collegiate team: 60% for both Cannon Kingsley and Dostanic to beat Fery and 62% chance for rising soph Murphy Cassone. Take any of the top US collegians, and Fery has 40% chance at best to win on HCs-would give him 10 more points on grass.

I don't know. I was never commenting on what advantage/disadvantage it would be for him playing for Florida in the Spring. I was only answering the question of whether or not he could return to the team without enrollment gap complications.

Interesting matchups in ATL 250 Quals 1st rd
JJ Wolf vs Donald Young-Wolf hasnt done well at recent Challengers. Come on JJ-take this. Last summer DY was losing to guys who play line 6 SEC in prize $ tourneys. DY is playing better now, but JJ you got this.
Young Brit Jack Draper (brother Ben played for one of the PaC 12 teams) vs Chris Eubanks

Quali draws were not posted until this evening with matches in am. Other players with college links: Steve Johnson and Dominik Koepfer https://www.atlantaopentennis.com/draws/?intloc=headernavsub

Well, you could say that at least Wolf made it to the 3rd round of '20 USO whereas Gators Riffice got smoked by baby Fed at the '21 USO :-D
Riffice played Dimitrov at the US Open? That's the first I've heard of it. You would think people would discuss things like this on a college tennis board so we would not all be in the dark.

bob hosts a screening of this match at his in-home movie theater every Friday at 8p, open to the public (well, he requires proof you graduated from an Ivy, no riff-raff in casa bob)

And yes, everyone who is invited will have a chance to meet two infamous Gators legends: Aaron Hernandez and Urban Meyer. They will teach you how to murder & "cheat", and get away with it, LOL...

sounds exciting, I’m in for the next one if you’ll excuse my lack of an Ivy diploma

This guys Wu whom geller almost beat is superstar in the making, he could be a dark horse to go far into the US open

Big difference between "almost beat" and "actually beat". Almost beat is still count as a lost. I could be that Wu played really bad that day while Geller played his best that day, and still LOST.

Also Kuzuhara (AO jr boys champ) had a match point against Stevie Johnson at the Atlanta Open qualies. That is simply amazing!

Wu whom geller almost beat

stanford does a lot of almost beating

but it makes sense, when you play nobodies all year long and goof around in no-pressure doubles exhibitions in Ojai etc, your ability to grind out close matches turns to mush

just another reason why i think child protective services should receive a call anytime a blue chip recruit’s parents allow Goldstein to walk into their home to make a pitch

Kova takes the first set in the week-later-rematch w Shelton

wouldnt be the worst thing if he dropped this one and got over to Atlanta to recover the legs for a day or two, I think tomorrow’s final would be very hard to win even if he pulled off this semi

Sureshot

Professional
always harder to repeat a win than to do it the first time, on to more opportunities in the ATL, good chances for Kova to earn a USO WC as was mentioned above
The commentator said he drew a qualifier in ATL. So that could be a good start. Still a very good run over the past couple weeks

qualifier then isner if he wins - most of the qualifiers are pretty tough draws, with Donald Young being probably the qualifier you’d most like to draw (but even then it’d be a matchup of two lefties and Ben might face a more difficult time holding than he’s used to)

Brooksby gets the ultimate grump Benoit Paire, hope he drives the Frenchman crazy and a few racquets lose their lives
