Yes, it’s Isner’s serve so I’d cut him some slack but watching the match I felt he was sometimes giving away his return position a bit too early as Isner was setting up to serve. I get that returning his serve is pretty much like a soccer goalie guessing on a PK and going but maybe that can improve the more he sees the big servers
Shelton would be crazy dumb to stay in college. He'd just be wasting a year of professional development. Pro careers don't last forever.
I'm amazed that Izner is still playing, at age 37. Has he had any serious injuries in his career--been out for a prolonged period? Tennis is going to take more of a toll on a 6'10 body
than it is someone who is smaller, so the fact that he's stayed relatively healthy (I assume) is fairly remarkable. He's surely been helped by the fact that he runs less in a match than just about anybody, given how short most of his points are--both when he is serving (good for him) and when he is returning (not good). He's always been a one-dimensional player--but it's the best single dimension to have.

k so 3 days into our local futures tournament...
...u of i alum zeke clark took down uva senior/ new grad gianni ross 2 and 5. ross hit some downright brutal winners but "all day zeke" was able to hold on to seal the w in the business end of the second set.
... kweisi kenyatte was forced to retire in his first round match (really tough break...)
... hunter heck was able to pull out a win in the third set tie-breaker to advance in singles
... az's murphy cassone is into the second round after beating auburn's tyler stice in straights
...osu's tyler zink edged illini wc alex petrov 3 and 1 (the trainer seemed to be active in this match)
...duke's garrett johns defeated illini wc and hometown fav lucas horve 1 and 4
...incoming michigan recruit bjorn swenson was 1-0 in the third when his opponent, baylor's adrian boitan, had to retire
... michigan wc patrick maloney won in straights over seita watanabe
... there currently is a logjam of matches due to torrential rains yesterday and today. today's unfinished matches were moved to the atkins center (1 hour away) and as of 8:35 p.m. on day 3, not a single ball has been struck on the doubles side. it is going to be interesting...

Hijikata is playing against the World #1 on Stadium court in a main tour event and he has on a Nike hat, a no name grey t-shirt, Lululemon shorts, Fila socks and Yones shoes. Go to a Futures or some Challengers and you'll see players in similar mis-matched kits. It shows how tough it is for some of these players trying to work their way up the rankings.
He'll never make the top 80.

Several aspects make playing college tennis hard. Few on top of my mind are:
1) Coaches pick from a global pool of players so if makes it very competitive to get in and get a slot.
2) There is no one selection criterion. Academics combined with UTR, ITF / ATP of WTA ranking, WTN now are all part of selection criterion.
3) Right fitment goes beyond academic and sports matching. Gelling with team, understanding how coaches operate etc and also key success measures.
4) The governing body rules are confusing. It’s so easy to become academically non compliant or lose amateur status. Knowing the rules is key in planning for college tennis.
We have added several articles on how college coaches are evaluated and how they evaluate players in Tennis Wizard.

I only saw game or two of this match when I had left TV on after Citi. I was impressed with how Rinky fought off 3 breakpoints on his serve early in 2nd playing world #1. Seems like he has bright future.
Agree, don't think he'll be in mis-matched kits for long. He competes well and it will hopefully pay off.

No it is not Versace price but still expensive, a lot more than Uniqlo. I bought Uniqlo shorts and tennis shirts for $4.90 per short or per shirt. I don't think you could Lululemon short or shirt for $4.90, even when they are on sale.

Lot of people with Equinox gym membership wear Lululemon. That's what I noticed when I go to Equinox. The only reason I am member at Equinox is because my employer subsidize almost 80% of the membership cost and that I can cancel the membership at anytime. And I wear $4.90 Uniqlo short and shirt to Equinox gym membership

along the way in Lexington, he gave Dostanic a bagel, took down a red hot Kovacevic, and routined world #114 Gomez 4,4 in the final
so, you know, maybe some of those college coaches would want him on their team after all - might be worth a full scholarship and a pair of Lululemons from a booster

I saw that Kova and Shelton will play each other for the 3rd time this summer in the 2nd rd provided they win their 1st rounds. Tennys Sandgren (Tenn) is back to playing Challengers-actually the Qualis of Chicago Challenger. Interesting matchups of former teammates in Chicago: Evan Zhu vs Keegan Smith UCLA in Q2s, Donstanic vs Holt USC in Q2s (did Holt graduate b4 Dostanic started?) A former MM player is in Chicago Qualis-Henry Patten of UNC-Asheville. He is up to 140 in dubs (played Wimbledon), 487 singles. At the Qualis for National Open in Montreal, Diallo of Kentucky beat Duckworth ATP #59. Unfortunately he lost his 2nd rd Qualis. He was the only one of 6 Canadians in Qualis to win a round. Quite a feat for college players to get in 1000 Qualis (Draxl got in too on WC but lost). Galarneau (NC State alumni) received wC into MD

Well, nobody knew the severity of Aaron Hernandez's criminal offense while he was at UF until many years after he left Gainesville, under Urban Meyer watch. This kid is from Communist China so you don't know if the communist doctored the birth certificate. Anything goes in China. Just saying.
Does the ITF or USTA publish the suspension of a player or is that under the "privacy" act?

Nice summer of work for Jo Monday heading into his junior year ... two ITF singles titles and a doubles title.
an honest question. If 'the communist doctored the birth certificate' - how would ITF/USTA ever find out/prove what his real age is so they could suspend him? I'm really interested in what you think the logic here is

In the WCs that dont make sense category, a 10.22 D3 (Denison) player from Columbus was given a WC into MD, not Qualis. Why didnt they just let him play Qualis? Put him in Qualis and bring up one Qualis player to MD. However he drew the 2 seed so his pro experience should be very short. If the TD wanted to give a d3 player a WC, James Hopper of Case Western in Cleveland would have been a much better choice. James was 97 on the alternate list (114 alternates at freeze and yet there were 10 byes in Qualis). Usually if an alternate in top 25 shows up, he gets in. However only 5 of the top 25 alts showed up. 9 of the alternates who signed in and who got to play were 50-99. Hopper was 97-guess he thought he wouldnt get in. Just a 2 hour drive from Cleveland to Columbus... Now Joey Dillon, UTR 4.0 has lost his 5th 0,0 match but garnered an open spot in MD dubs with 39 year Varun Luthra (6.81) who has the illustrious record of 1-17 in Qualis (he won a match vs a 3.61UTR). They played an OSU pari and lost 0,0. Once you win a Quali match, you can usually get in other Qualis. Joey has been featured in a Cracked Racquets podcast, in a blog, and had video of his match on twitter. I sure hope this does not inspire rec players to sign up as alternates for local Challengers. Tennis does not need a bunch of Varuns playing 17 Futures. Tennis has a bad enough rap if you followed the US Open twitter replies to "tennis is not a sport." Allowing rec players to play pro events does not help. If you are a rec player who never played college, at most play one Quali as a bucket list. Better to convince the TD to host a Pro Am where rec players can pay to hit with $needing young pros.
