Wolf loses to Thiem after having 2 match points in the final set tiebreaker. Hopefully a good learning experience for him. Thiem played lights out towards the end of the match. Good to see him starting to get his game back.

Shelton turns pro

little bit of a rebuild coming for the Gators who lost their top 6 singles players, but still happy for him
It was inevitable after his Cinci run. Good luck to the young gun!

As for UF, don’t think they’ll have any trouble recruiting top players given the track record. The new recruit Braswell I think is the brother of Micah at UT. He’s a very good prospect and Shelbayh had a productive summer. Bonetto and those two can form a core to build with. I get that this is the SEC we are talking about but the future looks good

yeah, probably looking at a year where the goals should be something like
1) top 20 team ranking
2) finish in the top 2-3 in the SEC standings
3) make the NCAA final 16

probably they'll shoot even higher than that, but I think that's what's most realistic - with all these young guys, a year or two later they'll be back competing for a title

That would be respectable and doable. They’ll certainly be quick learners playing in the SEC. They should target Kalamazoo 18s champ Tien, also a lefty. What better pitch to him than to point to Ben and his pathway to the Pros

certainly Crawford, Riffice, and Shelton all got their money’s worth for deciding to play for the Gators

years of experience at the top of an SEC lineup, couple NCAA singles titles, a team title

let’s do it Tien! (I won’t get my hopes up, he might skip college)

Rookie
Garrett Johns from Duke....doing well in Memphis this week
7-5,7-6 over Alex Michelsen in the quarters
a 3 hour win over Sam Riffice in the semis
Johns will play Mitsui from Tennessee in the finals
Mitsui absolutely pummeled Thai Son Kwiatoski earlier in the week and Mitsui beat Zeke Clark in the semis

Good match in the finals with Johns vs Mitsui. Seemed like Shunsuke was running on empty the whole time

All 4 semifinalists were as you said running on fumes and or also had some types of injuries they had to play through. They all provided super high quality tennis.

New York Times article....addresses the Cincinnati prize money question

Amateurs can play pro events and accumulate ranking points. Shelton is up to No. 171 in singles, making him the third-highest teenager in the ATP rankings behind No. 4 Carlos Alcaraz of Spain and No. 32 Holger Rune of Denmark, who are both 19 years old and already Grand Slam quarterfinalists. But turning professional will allow Shelton to keep his prize money of $84,510 from Cincinnati and the $80,000 he will earn for playing in the first round of the U.S. Open.

cool little section of the draw

Shelton vs Borges
Yibing Wu vs Basilishvili

Basilishvili has been playing like absolute, absolute trash recently - almost certain that one of the other three guys is about to have a memorable run to the rd of 32 and a match against Medvedev

Gabriel Diallo is in the final of the Granby Challenger
Justin Boulais must really be playing well.
Boulais defeated Clement Chidekh 7-6,6-2 before losing 2-6,6-4,7-6 to Jordan Thompson

Yibing Wu seems aware the Basilishvili is a seed you very much want to face - early 5-2 lead for the young man who dominated recent challengers

he's great. this is my first time getting to watch him for an extended period of time. I don't see star power in him like I do with Carlitos or Sinner (yet). I'm also a fan of Borges and the young-old NCAA clash is an interesting subplot to the match

certainly he's no sinner or alcaraz at this point

but a very steep upward trajectory in the past 24 months for a kid who never played international junior tennis gives hope that the best is still well in front of him

going to be tough to come back from losing two close TBs, down 2 sets to 1

headed to a 5th set, great match - borges missed a true sitter volley that would have put him up 6-4 (if I'm remembering correctly) in 4th set TB, we'll see if he can forget about that one and start fresh in the 5th or if it haunts him

Tough loss for Ben. Hopefully he learns fast that he’ll have to cut down on random errors. Those cost him the match imho

yep, has to cut down on loose points / rally errors

he will

better to face that task than to face the task of developing tour-level weapons, which he already has

Can someone tell me how my favorite college player in Brandon Holt is current 2 sets and a break up against Taylor Fritz right now?

Watch me jinx Holt and make him lose the match right here

Seemed to me many of those 5th set errors were due to fatigue. Got to figure that with experience and fitness his consistency will only get better. Also would like to see him close the net a little more often for the easy volley when he stretches his opponent with those massive groundies.

Bourges is a good example of pro tour experience gains post college 3 years or so. I'm sure Ben will take in much of this as a positive learning process.

Holt going to a 5th set MTB.
Also Hijikata took a set off Nadal last night before Nadal went beast mode

Wolf man is into the rd of 32 and up to #70 in the world, likely Kyrgios next

(one interesting side note, as Bob used to rag on me for saying Wolf would have a better career than Kudla - Wolf has now made the 3R of the USO twice, something Kudla only has done once - Kudla also made 3R (x1) and the 4R (x1) of Wimbledon - a ways to go to have a better career than Kudla, obviously, but objectively better at the USO already)

Kyrgios very complimentary of JJ in his post match presser. Said he loves the way he plays and great guy in the locker room too. He’s expecting a real battle. This was interesting coming from NK. I know he’s close buddies with Jack Sock. And now perhaps JJ as well

Kyrgios seems to be "friendly" with most players these days. That's one area in which he's matured. Wolf has the groundstrokes to stay with Kyrgios but the serve and Kyrgios's mindset will most likely be the decider.

I’ll bite. Apples and oranges Bob. If you are kidding tip of the cap, if you don’t understand no one can help you. Short answer = Never
Not sure about Holt but Shelton has the upside to get there. It could take some time but he’s got game
