What I’ve been saying for a long time on here to combat the popular notion that college tennis is a huge liability and strain on athletic departments. Finally some numbers to back it up.
LSU athletic department
as you can see. Tennis is a money loser, just like every sport is minus basketball and football. (Baseball makes money for LSu but they are a rare exception as it loses a lot of money at most schools)
but tennis does not lose nearly the amount of money that other Olympic sports do, mainly because of the smaller teams and less costs.
infact in this, men’s tennis is LSU’s 6th most “profitable” sport out of 17. While women’s tennis is 8th.
I doubt many schools really spend that much more on tennis than LSU yearly. Also like I said, most schools would have baseball below tennis to with their high costs. LSU averages huge baseball attendance and still barely makes a profit on it. Now other schools would have women’s basketball higher than LSU but outside of a few differences I think this is about how tennis stacks up throughout the country in athletic departments.
so the rush to cut tennis programs may not be as high as some people used to think a few years ago.
