Colleges with a competitive tennis CLUB.

My daughter who is currently a junior in high school and is exploring her college options. She developed a passion for tennis a bit later than some, but now she's quite serious about it and dreams of playing for a college tennis team. However, I'm concerned that her skill level might not meet the requirements of the schools she's interested in attending. Despite acknowledging this, she's determined to give it her all and hopes to earn a spot on a team through walk-on tryouts rather than being recruited.

My worry is that even if she does make the team, her skill level might relegate her to being an alternate player most of the time, as was the case during her freshman and sophomore years in high school. I'm seeking recommendations for universities or colleges with competitive club tennis team where she could still have a great experience being a part of the team. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I think most larger schools have club tennis programs, but you’ll have to research it for details.

At Stanford years ago they had coed tennis classes for credit taught by the team tennis coaches. I signed up every quarter which gave me two built in tennis hours per week in my schedule. I think many schools offer the same. Stanford also had quarterly intramural tourneys in doubles and mixed. They also had a non varsity “JV” tennis challenge ladder where you could challenge your way all the way up to the varsity team.

At university of Washington, they had an active coed tennis club when I was a grad student (rest of team was undergrads) that traveled to play other local club teams in the PNW and even played in organized tournaments.

Thank you so much for your kind reply. My daughter would love that very much! Will look into other larger schools for similar programs. Thank you again!

It will depend on the college she is attending. Club teams can be all over the board as far as how strong they are. My guess is the best D1 club teams are likely at the level of a high D3 program. I'm guessing if the tennis team in general is strong, most likely the club team will be strong too.
