Collegians in summer ITF/ATP events

Banerjee decided to pass on this. competition is too weak
I suppose you meant Basavareddy? I wouldn’t call the competition weak at all with Spizzirri, Braswell, EQ, Tomic etc. That said Basavareddy is having success at the Challenger level, so why grind out Futures? In fact before the summer’s up I’d expect both Spizzirri and Braswell to be well established on the Challenger circuit.

Michelsen drawn against Berrettini in the Halle Open. Am looking for him to have a good grass court swing.

At the Challenger level, Zheng played in the qualies of one in France. Lost a close one to #626 Florent Bax. It's on clay so will need some getting used to after spending all of the college season on hard courts.

Michaelson is capable of beating berrentini. but problem is Barrentini just won a tournament last week and his confidence is all time high. and he won't get upset by college player

Jake Fearnley of TCU earns a WC into MD of Eastbourne after winning Nottingham Challenger. That win bumped his ranking up to 274, a 250 spot jump. The lowest ranked player in MD w/o WC is ranked 87. His best ranked win at Nottingham was Jerry Shang #96. Fearnley also received WC into MD of Wimbledon and his teammate JPJ got WC into Wdon Qualis

Agreed, and nishioka is one of my favorites given my preference for shorter guys in a sea of giants. But he is 11-16 on grass lifetime and 1-10 at the tour level. It was not particularly close either with Nishioka winning 71-53 total points. Not a good look for someone whose game should be quite suited to grass.

I remain optimistic for Fery’s long term prospects.

Also learner tien has won 3 15ks in a row now, this latest one being especially dominant (just lost 21 games in 5 matches…, 20-1 in sets in last 2…). Wonder how it’ll translate to higher levels. Winning that many matches in a row with those kinds of scorelines is imo a great predictor of future success (see brooksby and sinner in 2019) so let’s see if it’ll work out for Tien. My big worry is the serve; it’s really just a rally starter for him. I watched the full match with Karue sell in YouTube, everything else looks very good. Brooksby got to the top 30 with no serve so let’s hope. Pretty crazy he’s going to be allowed to play kalamazoo again and I don’t see who can stop him from 3 peating barring injury

Giles Hussey (GA State, Tenn) earned his 1st ATP level win at Eastbourne. He received a WC into Qualis and beat #98 Cazaux and then lost a close one to Jerry Shang. Got into MD as LL and beat #32 Navone. Eventful week for #350 who is now up to 310 in live rankings. Prior to his WC into the 250, he was trying to get in Challengers as an alternate. This is a guy who as a freshman at GA state only played 2 dual matches at line 6. He played line 5 for Tenn as transfer grad student and beat freshmen Ben Shelton. If he can win his next round vs a top 50 Italian, he will play winner of Brits Billy Harris and Charles Broom (Dartmouth, Baylor). Broom as a LL got in when Tommy Paul withdrew after his Queen’s win.
Out of the 9 Brits in top 300 under age 29, 7 played college tennis. However outside of Norrie who has recently lost in two 1st rounds and is in danger of dropping out of top 50, the Brit collegians have struggled to stay inside top 200. Peniston, Jubb, and Crawford got inside top 200 but couldn’t break top 100 and are back in 200s. Will be interesting to see which collegians make most of Wdon WCs

Eubanks is out of top 50 after 1st rd loss in Mallorca. Wolf is out of top 100 and is playing Challengers. Hopefully he will do well in Qualis or get WC into some US ATP events this summer and get his game back on track. I hope Eubanks can put on a good showing at the last ATL 250 in late July. Curious to hear which GA college player will get the MD WC- @Gemini have you heard who is the lucky guy?

Watched highlights of Nishioka’s win over Broady today at Eastbourne. Can totally see how he could beat Fery. Very crafty player with an inside out backhand line (w/ a two-hander no less). Great use of tight angles and disguised drops. Also a lesson in there for Tien on how to overcome the lack of a serve as a weapon. Nishioka’s is also simply a point starter. Not saying he’s the next coming of Nadal but he can have decent success on grass with his game style (past record notwithstanding).

Is it UGA’s turn this year? If so would like to see Paulsell get the honor. He’s gotta be one of the most improved collegiate players out there.
Happened to check ATL open FB page today, and Andres Martin gets WC again. Usually WC recipient has been a GA player attending a GA college. It was GA’s turn but since GA didn’t have a strong GAian on team I guess they went with GT again. I see they have a WC left. Maybe if they get Bulldog backlash they will put Paulsell in too or give Paulsell a WC for Qualis. They did that for Garrett Johns one year as a GA resident going out of state to Duke. Hope someone besides Donald young gets the Quali WC from the WC tourney this year. Stice of Auburn lost a couple years in row to DY in the final for one of the Quali WCs. DY is playing WC tourneys again…

With this being the last year of this tourney in ATL, my guess is they do whatever they want with it and hold it for a big name until the last minute. If they don't get a top player to take it, it will go to a local.

Not sure if Kyrios is nearing coming back, would love to see him back in the game, maybe he gets a WC?

Eubanks is not on the current acceptance list. He is playing Newport the week before. I assume they will hold LE for him. There is one MD WC left plus 2 SE and the one LE. However there are always late withdrawals. The WC for Ben Shelton in 2022 was a later WC. Ben won a 1st rd match-I think his 1st ATP level win in ‘22 but lost in 1st rd in ‘23 as 6th seed. Hope Ben as 1 seed makes it to finals this year. I am sad that my son won’t be able to come back to GA as a hitting partner this last year. As a teenager he had been a hitting player for the Quali guys. Then last year back in GA working and finishing his MBA, he was hitting partner Fri-Sat for QF to finalists-got to warm up 5 of the final 8-several on stadium court which was a cool experience. However those aluminum bleacher seats and the humidity made the ATL 250 miserable for spectators so I usually watch on TV! When son was a junior, we watched in person a few years.

I wonder if Alex Michelsen will get a SE or LE to ATL. He is playing Newport the week before but not for ATL. Quali list is not out yet for ATL-wonder which former or current collegians will play. Last year Chopra of GT got Quali WC. This is Andres’ 3rd year straight for MD WC. UGA should get at least a Quali WC for a player

Kyrgios is probably not fit to play singles-maybe dubs but highly unlikely or we would have heard already. The ATL 250 does seem to attract a lot of Australians. One year when Kyrgios was playing, son was a hitting partner for a player next to Kyrgio’s practice court and Kyrgios was polite when asking for the return of a loose ball. I watched Kyrgios in person that year but I am totally blank on that match-can’t remember who he played. He must have behaved or I would remember…

once again, the tournament director did not have any practice courts. So, GT said you can use our courts if Andres Martin gets the college wild card. Tournament director did the exact same thing last year even though it was GA's year to get the college wild card. Thomas Paulsell defeated Andres Martin when the teams played a dual match.

Thanks for explanation. When Eddie was TD, they did alternate the WC. Is this the new TD’s 2nd or 3rd year? What happened to the practice courts that were next to the parking garage? It’s been a couple years since I’ve been down to watch-is the temporary site set up different in Atlantic station in recent years? Is ATL 250 the only US ATP event played on temporary courts? Hope ATL area can get a Challenger since it is losing the 250-could see one at LT Peachtree Corners, Hudlow, Rome, etc

Would love to see Kyrgios get back on court.

Met Hussey a few time when we would go and hang out with the GSU players (our French guy knew their French guy). Nice guy. I know some funny stories about him lol. He played some great matches at 1 for GSU (I think he had a great win at GT one year). Glad to see him doing well in the tour!

There are 18 former/current male collegians in MD. You have listed 8 of them (Jack Draper didnt play college tennis but his brother Ben did). 7 of the below are 28-32yo so they have been out of college a while, but Nakishima is 22 (only 1 yr at UVA), Rinky is 23, Kovacevic and Walton are 25.
5 more US guys
Aleks Kovacevic ILL v 5 Medvedev
Brandon Nakashima UVA v 18 Baez
Mackenzie McDonald UCLA v Ruusuvuori
Marcos Giron UCLA v Henry Searle (GB)
Christopher Eubanks GA Tech v Halys
Rest of world
Koepfer (Tulane) v Fognini
Rinderknech (Tex A&M) v Nishikori
Rinky Hijikata (UNC) v Cobolli
Vukic (ILL) v Ofner
Adam Walton (Tenn) v Coria
Hanfmann USC v 1 Sinner

Vukic lost today in finals of Eastbourne to Fritz 6-7 6-7 He also lost to Fritz in finals of ATL 250 last summer.

I know we're talking Wimbledon --- and for good reason --- but pouring it out for the dudes grinding on the Futures circuit. cannot imagine what many of them are going through. back to back tournaments for weeks on end this summer

Hopefully with the Accelator program more of the top 10 or 20 ITA players are getting WCs into Challenger MDs and Qualis and spending a lot less time playing Futures. It’s better than it used to be-7 years ago a NCAA singles SF or QFist could be playing in US summerFutures Quali. Between more tournaments-both Future and CH on campus on fall and the WCs to host teams and the more recent Accelerator program, it seems much faster for the best collegians to make the jump from campus to regular Challenger competitor and beyond.

I feel for a guy like Andre Ilagan who in the last calendar year and some change finished in the top 16 of NCAAs (granted wasn't top 10 or 20 ITA ranking), won and had good runs at several Futures last fall and winter, went from qualifying to like quarters or semis of one of the Indian Wells challengers this past January, to playing a Future or Challenger quali almost every week this spring and summer. he was the 2 seed at a Future this past week and lost in the first round

and the sad part is, he's one of several guys like this. I started a thread on the General Pro Player Discussion but maybe here, it's better. is the tour the hardest it's been in a while? I consistently see guys ranked in the 200s and 300s playing Futures. and to think the breaking through to Challengers requires that much of a leap from there...

Ilagan appears to be making progress, his current ranking looks like it's at a career high ATM. For most players, progress up the ranks is slow, and during that time they need funds to stay out there to make it to the challenger level and beyond to be self-sustaining.

You've identified the ranking area that seems to be the hardest to get past, 200 - 300. I've been following pro tennis at these levels for years and this just seems to be the toughest area to jump past. Obviously at this level the log jam is simply narrower. At the challenger level for players 200-700 easy matches are tough to come by let alone consecutive easy matches almost rarely happens.
