Collegians in summer ITF/ATP events

Great to see Quinn qualify for FO MD. It would be interesting if he's drawn to play Michelsen who is set to play a qualifier.

Also, Tien plays Zverev first up.
Great to see some fine young Americans in main draw slam action. The thing is though that they aren't good on clay with all due respect. The only one that may break the unfortunate tradition is the junior Kennedy who plays solid on clay.

Quinn for some reason is really good on clay courts. wonder if he grew up playing on green clay ?

Jake Fearnley sets up a 3rd-round clash against fellow former Horned Frog Cam Norrie at Roland Garros... when was the last time two college tennis alum played each other at a slam? Any at a similar round? I can think of maybe UCLA or Stanford pulling off the same feat, but not sure of any other school?
yeah likely hasn’t happened very much at all. Giron and McDonald have only played each other twice on tour, once in Cincinnati and once in Mallorca.

Dostanic with a 7-6,6-4 first round win over Michael Zheng in the first round of the Tyler, TX challenger.
really tough first round matchup for Zheng...after having a great Little Rock Challenger tournament.

Andy Andrade has really been playing well in challengers
today, Rafael Jodar beat andrade in Straight sets. (jodar had lost to Draxl last week in Little Rock)

Caught a little bit of the match between Baris and J Braswell at the Wichita 25k. Gotta say Baris is striking a pro level ball with a lot of mustard on it. Rushing and wrongfooting Braswell often.

Picking him as the dark horse for the USO playoffs next week. Tbh, his ball quality is better than Zheng's or Dostanic's. Question is whether he can stay dialed in against someone like Zheng for extended periods.

Jinxed Baris. Goes down 4&2 to Kim, who incidentally is also in next week's USO playoffs.

So Dostanic beat Zheng at the TX Challenger and now Kim downs Baris. Will be interesting to watch them go at it in Orlando.

Any news on why Kim pulled out vs former Buckeye #1 Boulais?

Could be he didn't want to risk injury ahead of the USO playoffs.
Godsick and Riviera to win the US open doubles

Good win for former UK Wildcat and now ATP 250 title winner Gabe Diallo. He always seems to have a game tailor made for the ATP and Grass specifically with the big serve and laser groundies. Put a nice beat down on my Buckeyes in the ‘22 NCAA’s, but won’t hold that against him going forward
Diallo is now inside the top 50 with 2 wins vs top 20ish guys. A few years back my son had an unfinished college match with GD-they were on serve in the 2nd. It’s inspiring for current and post collegians to see guys they played on campus reach the ATP level. Even if they have no interest in going pro, they can watch a match on TV and remember they once traded breaks with those guys…

Alright. Dostanic playing Zheng for the third time since (and including) NCAAs. This is for a spot in the USO MD w/ the loser getting a WC into qualies. Both won their SFs against Baris and Kim respectively in straights.

For the women, Glozman goes up against Stoiana. Changing of the guard as Gruskin put it.

Dostanic and Glozman bag the MD wildcards in straight sets. Congrats to them!

Dostanic is probably the best college player considering he has a hattrick of wins over Zheng.

Had watched Glozman compete against Jovic at the USTA G18s final. And she did hang in there. Jovic just won a WTA125 in her warmup for Wimby. So hopefully Glozman won't be a deer in the headlights!

Stop the presses....Tien gets a 4&6 win over Shelton at the Mallorca ATP250.

Crazy! Ofc, if he can beat Medvedev why not Ben?
Right. Now if he can just beat Joao Fonseca. I think LT is something like 0-5 against him in the juniors and pros. I still contend that LT has a ton of upside. Scary thing is he reminds me a lot of Donald Young from a talent stand point. I'm talking about the positive aspects, feel, courtsense, control, etc.

Lol re Fonseca. And apt comparison with DY btw. Was trying to place him and now I have!

Congrats to Oliver Tarvet of U of San Diego on his qualification win and main draw entry into Wimbledon. There are plenty of other former recent collegians in the main draw already by doing well on tour (including a couple of wild cards). Tarvet in particular had a nice run after getting a WC into Qualifying then winning 3 matches to get to the main draw. UVA's Chris Rodesch also gained entry via Qualification, he's currently ATP #163 so he'd had some success already.

And he draws a fellow qualifier first round and if he wins then Alcaraz.

Also, Tien v Basavareddy and Fearnley v Fonseca in R1. Tien v Basa winner probably gets Rune.

And August Holmgren, who also played for U of San Diego, qualified for the main draw as well. Holmgren lost to Ben Shelton in the NCAA Singles in '22. Honestly, I don't think I ever I would have imagined tiny USD would have 2 players in the main draw at Wimbledon.

Basavareddy has been a bit disappointing off late but great win for Fery :)
Not sure where you're getting your disappointment from for NB's performance of late. He had a couple of patchy runs on clay. Leading up to Wimbledon only played two tournaments going 2-2. He's still only 20 and heading to the hard court season which he's best on should see some progress. He's also now 0-3 verse LT. He'll be 103 in next weeks rankings and get into most all the N. American hardcourt events.

Him losing in straights to Lerner is a bit of a disappointment. Though I will say I just recently listened to a podcast with Adam Walton who was opining on how hard it is to even get A win on tour compared to the challengers. It's easy to be harsh as a fan.

Diallo has arrived. Win or lose, forcing a fifth against #5 Fritz counts for a lot!

Looking forward to how he continues to build on it.
Absolutely looked like he belongs. Kind of like the bleach blond hair too, show's he's still a youngster looking to have some fun.

Holmgren in a battle of the breakers playing #21 Machac: 7-6(5), 6-7(8), 6-7(5),7-5, and on serve in the fifth. All these elite college dudes are right in the mix.

Holmgren wins. Didn't have USD grabbing all the Wimby college tennis PR on my bingo card.
Lol. Bingo!

Watch Oliver Tarvet's post match interview. Such a huge plug for USD tennis (and college tennis in general). Good on him to showcase the college game.

I remember a few years back holmgren played dimitrov at the San Diego open and lost 1 and 1 and I pondered the insane gulf between pros and college….not bad!

I remember a few years back (‘23) and Holmgren lost in first round of QUALIFYING of Tiburon Challenger. Good for him for figuring something out and having the tournament of his life.
