He then proceeded to win the two matches required for #1 before tanking to Sonego in absolute shameless fashion. 2018 Rotterdam: Federer clinched in his 3rd match/QF (vs Haase) for oldest #1 ever. Did he stop there? No, he did not. Instead, he went on to win the tournament! Giving the fans what they wanted. Little things like this are what separates Federer from everyone else.

riiight....it was just fine for all 3 round before that match (he rag dolled all his opponents) ....he even added 2 clay court tournaments to his schedule during that summer. I think the prospect of facing and losing to in form Rafa on AA Stadium for first time was something he wanted to avoid. Also Millman USO 18 and Delpo 17 lossess were a bit suspicious too.

You could also say that Djokovic (and Thiem), having achieved their objectives, were generous and stood aside to let lower ranked players, who need the prize money more, win. Federer on the other hand was greedy.
