Complete Catalog of Yamaha Releases?

Very lucky auction find came in today -- new old stock tricolore Proto EX. Very interesting to see the factory tags and grip plastic.

I'll translate the text on the grip shortly, but at first glance the top part says you will get great spin. The Secret-branded cover didn't come with this racket, that was another new old stock find I picked up years ago on the off chance I ever found a new old stock Italy EX

@ekucheraw

Wake up, there’s another for the list, and it’s a real oldie. On the bay right now is quite an ominously named ‘Yamaha Court Oath’. Classic wood frame. Never seen it before just now.

I wish. That’s been on my to-buy list for a couple years now. They most often come up in Japan but I know they were sold in the west too.

If Post Images ever starts working again (!), you can see in my post above that they're the best of the graphite-fibreglass models, below the Xam-10 with Kevlar, and Xam-8 with Boron and Kevlar. The hoop is described as +25%, so around 85sqi mid-size; and I've seen them listed with USL, SL and L weight categories so they could vary quite a lot. Probably from 325g to 354g unstrung. Plus, they came with weighted grommet strips, so you can adjust the mass in the hoop.

Do you know if grips come bigger or smaller than modern grips? I have a chance to get a racket but it comes a size larger than my usual grip

Anecdotal Evidence but in my experience an Old School 4 1/2 usually ends up being more like a Modern 4 3/8, so a bigger size on an older frame generally is smaller than the modern counterpart.

I’ve got 4 of those taking up room in my cupboard if anyone wants them

Michael what are the grips and weights of the ones you have?

I remember when you were hoarding these -- did the honeymoon end? I love them but I find that the ultra-raw feel gets a bit old. I find myself wanting to feel the frame doing a bit more.

Love that I’m still finding new Yammys to add to this list. Just saw a midsize aluminum on the bay. Interesting shape. Goes by the name Yamaha YMX 444

My default for any 110 frame is 55lbs.
Well, that's nicely put. But in reality, frame stiffness plays the leading role.
You can't lump all frames together and use a fixed number.
What should the final DT result be? Wich string?
For the old frames with low flex, that seems a little low, especially since they are OS frames.
What machine do you use?

Quick question / string recommendation- ex110 tour yellow ones - gonna get restrung - any oversized string
Michael has exquisite taste in rackets .
For me if I was thinking non poly - isospeed professional 17 .
Poly - low powered ultra cable or Volkl cyclone .
I’m a bit weird I string all my sticks between 36-38 lbs tension across the board .
No matter the head size or Ra total .
Keep us posted son !

my ocd is burning and I am petitioning @ekucheraw to please update the first post with some of these new finds before they're buried forever.
I'll get on that after I finish up lessons for the evening, thank you for reminding me! Started this thread on a whim over 2 years ago and am really happy with the scope of the list you all have managed to create!

That's the Devil's racket if you are Japanese. Must have been an export only model!
Speaking of Devil's rackets, now there's a listing on the bay for two rackets in a similar vein, the YMX 666. Hilariously the listing title says "Yamaha Tennis Racket Set 2pcs - 3+ Years Old".

yes these rackets from around 1985 are at least 3 years old, I do concede. They also feature a nearly square buttcap that would surely make @teachingprotx squirm if he already didn't like the slightly more conventional angled-oval shape of other 80s Yammys. These YMX's are even more non-conformist.

Hey Guys

Any string recommendations for Secret 04 and Secret EX 110?

Im thinking of stringing them with my standard string - Lynx Tour 1.25 but maybe some of You knows what works the best in this frames?

You can put Lynx Tour in the 110s I think, but I wouldn't put that string in one of the widebodies.

Like Kevin I've done X1 in the EXs and it's special. Only ever tried syngut in the 04 and it seems happy, I don't think that's a strong sensitive frame.

Finally strung up the Proto 05 and took it out. What a weird frame this is ...

Same mold as the HI-FLEX and HI-FLEX L, and since I haven't restrung those frames yet I couldn't say if this is just a rebrand or if the layup is updated as well.

This is a really stunning frame in person, and looks better than the standard-mold Protos, which are nowhere near as graceful and interesting. As far as how it plays, it makes me feel like I'm not that great at understanding frames sometimes. First impressions were that this was much flexier and more comfortable than any of the standard-mold protos and secrets, and that's unambiguously true. But when I hit with it, balls saaaaaaillled.

Not in a bad way, just an unexpected way. Strings are Kirschbaum SG at 50lbs. I would have thought that since this felt so much less stiff than the others, as well as the rather dense center pattern, that it would be a bit wimpier with a lower launch, but it's not. It's actually ultra deadly -- once I got a handle on the launch angle (which is very, very high), and began spinning forehands more, this became an absolute weapon. Hitting partner said she felt by far the most pace and speed coming off this thing than off any other racket I hit with that day. It's very much a "bully frame", you know the feeling, where you're kinda just bashing your opponent down and it feels a bit unfair.

Comfort was still well above average, but not like a "comfort frame" -- I'd have to think that RA is in the low 60's. Swing weight with a couple tiny dabs of lead is 322 with dampener, and static weight was somewhere in the mid 330's.

I'm gonna redo the strings with a multi at higher tension next time.

Omg i only use synthetic gut /multis in old low powered frames like my Bumblebee qnd im afriad my secret 04 is already to powerfull strung with some old poly strings. But i will try Head Velocity at 60 in EX 110

EDIT:
Ive strung it with Head Syn Gut at 24 kilos and even at -3 celsius degrees its a way to much power. Next time i try some polly. Considering this frame flex and weight i dont expect any problems with comfort
