Computer problem

I was hoping that someone here may have come across this problem, so there would be an easy fix.
On my desk top, I am running windows XP with the SP3.
Upon startup, an icon(magnifying glass), on the bottom bar appears, and it takes a long time with that thing running, and says indexing complete, after it is done. This occurs everythime I start up computer, and slows it up considerably.
I have tried the following:
Went to start, run, typed in services.msc scrolled down list to indexing, switched it from automatic to manual, and that made no difference.
Then switched indexing to disable, and still no difference.
Then scrolled down to windows search (the program that this runs under), and did the same, switch to manual, from automatic, and no difference, and then to disable and still no difference.
Every time I power up computer, it takes a long while to index, and slows things down.
This must have been in some update that was downloaded. Wish it was not there, but if I go to the control panel to delete the windows search4.0 a list of functions appears that says it may not function if I delete this program.

Has anyone else had this problem and if so was there an easy solution? Thanks Jim

I'm guessing it's the new Windows search thing. I run XP SP3 and have opted not to install Windows Search.
