Hello,

I have a couple of questions about the Vac Pro 90:

1) what strings/tension works best in it? How does it play full poly?

2) would the Pacific X Feel 90 grommets fit into its old Fischer predecessor?

Thanks a lot for any input.

I felt that it was a little underpowered with multi (x one bi phase) at 50 lbs. I switched to full gut (also at 50) and felt that that really opened up the sweet spot. I've never tried it with polys. This frame is all about feel, in my opinion, and I think polys would ruin it for me. I would recommend gut or multi.

Thanks a lot. I will gladly supply it with full gut or gut/poly hybrid as it will be my only "guilty pleasure" hit ever. I have been waiting for a frame like this for a long time.

I am not much into string testing, but I love this frame for anything very close to the net... Volley, volley, volley... It's pure pleasure ;-)

It's a great "guilty pleasure" frame. I don't think I've played my absolute best with it, but it's always the first one I reach for.

50 xone here with Fischer. The Pacific is more powerful slightly crisper and more head heavy... not better. Just different..

I also recommend a full bed of natural gut at 50 pounds or so.

The Pacific X Feel 90 grommets are a perfect replacement, unless the Vacuum Pro is the rare, original (light blue) version, which has a different (14x19) drilling pattern than the later (16x20) versions.

Thanks a lot, guys. Its a classic 16x20 pattern, really looking forward to playing with this legendary frame.

I won't string it myself but I'll inform the stringer. Thanks a lot.

Joohan,
I've tried a lot of different strings and setups. I would advise to try this at 48/48 or 48/46 with full bed of Pacific X-Cite 1.25. Absolute bliss! I prefer it to full gut or gut/poly hybrid.

Let me know if you end up trying & how you find it.

This is my standard racket I've used for last 20 years (with some wandering around among various other sticks because I like trialling others for fun).

(I use a Sampras shock also).

Cheers

Thank you, Peter.

I am quite busy with my go-to frame - matching the two of them, fine tuning strings, etc. - but I will give your suggestion a try. I'm very pleased with VS/RPM combo but open to try new strings. I'd like to settle on a frame I'd want to play 20 years with. Respect.

Best.

The plot thickens! So I have 6 of these rackets.. 1 is over 25 years old, 2 I bought more recently on ****, and another 2 again on **** - all used. The 6th one I bought recently - and it was brand new / never used!
The difference in the brand new one vs the oldest one is amazing! The old one is so flexy - it must have the longest dwell time of possibly any racket :). The new unused one is like playing with a plank of wood compared to the others. I would have guessed an okder racket wouod of course be more flexible, but given that these frames were famously flexible to begin with, i was really surprised at the difference. The oldest and newest were both strung at 48 with pacific xcite.
So.. It would appear the amount of use the racket has had, especially these older rackets, hugely impacts how strings play in them.
(The newer one, I would imagine, would greatly benefit from natural gut. I haven't had a chance to test it yet).
I do prefer the older flexier frame, so I suppose I'll just have to play the new one in for 20 odd years and it'll be perfect haha..

It’s true. A bit like with guitars - you need to “play in” the wood a bit to get the best tone out. On the other hand, I know players who prefer the feel of a brand new frame. I’d say you’re well supplied at the moment. Me, I’m riding the Angell bandwagon hard and I’m saving my Vacuums for special occasions. I’ve just recently acquired an iPrestige Mid in near mint condition. Very impressive frame as well.

Thanks a lot for all your input. I've had my first outing with a Vacuum 90 today - outstanding feel. Just amazing.

It's my racquet of choice even now. Mine are strung with Technifibre Duramix at 47 lbs(mains), 45 for crosses for complete bliss on a tennis court.

Joohan, quick question for you. Have you ever used a volkl pb10 mid? Specs look quit similar to Fischer pro vacuum 90. I've just purchased a few of the recently released version from TW. However I'm suffering from tennis elbow from a brief fling with Babolat Pure Strike VS (which I have to admit I loved with gut and 4g setup), but I believe my TE came from using it, so I sold them. So technically I shouldn't play when they arrive... but I'm not sure I have that much willpower :)

Going to try a champions choice maybe, or else a thin copoly setup around 53/50 or something. Advice / thoughts welcome...

Hello Peter,

I’m not visiting TT forums too much so it’s better to send me a PM to get in touch.

I played with PB10 for 2-3 months 7 years back and then again last autumn. Strung with MSV Focus Hex at 52/50 the first time, Weiss Cannon Silverstring in same tension the second. Nice frame, a bit wobbly higher up the stringbed but superfast on groundstrokes and very easy to maneuver.

I sold it - last time because I was getting a bit of discomfort in my triceps/elbow. Weird, I know, but I seem not to like frames that are too soft/a bit wobbly since they seem to produce some kind of longer wavelength vibrations that don’t agree with my body. Obviously, it’s a super arm friendly frame so you’ve got - most probably - nothing to worry about. I think I could have fixed it with a bit of lead tape here and there but A) it would lose its low 320s SW that’s the most appealing aspect of that frame for me B) with the frame being practically discontinued/grommets hard to get and with the fact I’m 97% satisfied with my go-to frame (Angell TC100) - I just couldn’t be bothered to try and make it work.

Hope it helps.

Best

J.

What’s the story behind those? Is this pro-stock?

Hi Joohan,
Just to add to this topic / conversation - one of my favourite setups for the Fischer pro vacuum 90's (after a lot of testing), is Lux 4G soft in the mains at 48lbs, and nat gut crosses at 52. I've only tried with VS Team so far, but I suspect the different gut makes in the crosses won't play hugely different. I have some Pacific and Lux gut I'll be testing eventually.

Anyway - def worth taking a look / test run if you are still playing around with your guilty pleasure racket :)

ps. I thought nat gut mains and poly crosses was a bit too lively, and since the Fischers don't take high tensions like the pro staffs for example, you can't increase the gut to reel in the power.

For the Ps90 testing, I def preferred the soft string in the mains - with gut mains at 59lbs and pacific poly force crosses at 56lbs.

I'm still going to keep one Ficsher strung with Pacific x-cite 1.25 at 48/46 for outdoor hitting.

I haven't tried this setup yet for the PB10 Mid (93), but I suspect they might help the extremely low power of those sticks.

Cheers
Peter

1) for me, mains: klip legend 18 at 53lbs and crosses: big banger ace 18 at 48lbs. I would recommend 48lbs for any strings you like.

2) yes.

If you want more power, I put more lead tape at 3 and 9 because I need better stability for backhand slice to chip and charge at the net. I am 100% net rusher.

How does the Fisher Vacuum Pro 90 compare with the Wilson 90s (including the KPS88)?
I m sure kps88 have more power than VP90. I know for the fact is that I’m using VP90 and PS85 St Vincent. Guess what - PS85 is better for power but VP90 is better for a feel. That’s why I put a lot of lead tapes at 3 and 9 of VP90. It’s all good.

In my opinion - the pro staff's are more solid for sure, but the extra weight (10grams more than the Fischers on average), combined with more of that weight I think in the head of the Pro staff compared to the Fischers, makes the fischers a lot more manoeuvrable in my opinion.

I can hit pretty well with the pro staff if rallying / practicing etc. but when it comes to a match I'm a lot more comfortable with the Fischers. but then again I have used them for years so I'm sure that's a big factor. (less of an issue for doubles as only half the court to look after).

ps - although the Pro staffs are more stable and probably more powerful (more mass / weight), because I can get better head speed from the Fischers, I think I probably get the same power from both. But trying different string setups for the Fischers is very limited as they can't really take much past the 52/50 expected. I find them way too powerful with any gut / poly setup, but poly/gut is very nice.

Pacific x-cite at about 46/47/48 lbs is sweet also - very controlled yet still plenty of pop.

I've never tried adding lead to the Fischers, but I like the feel / ability to whip the heads so easily - and I imagine I would struggle to get used to extra weight / different balance.

What about the better doubles stick? Sounds like Fischer is the better singles though, the lighter weight is better for groundstrokes?

I think it really depends on someone's ability. If you have the strength to manoeuvre the Pro staff it's probably the better stick. But I struggle with it a little, especially on an off-day. For me, I'm better with the Fischer for sure, for both singles or dubs. I play a lot of dubs too & the fischer is a peach for volleying - no doubt.

Just to note on this - after playing with different tensions - nat gut mains 52 or 53, and crosses 4g original at 48 is really really nice. (If you drop the cross to 47 it gives amazing spin, especially on serves - but might not play as well after a few hours if the 4g loses a bit more tension etc. 48 or 49 gives you longer playing time).

Agreed with tensions of 48/48 or 48/46 for Gut/ploy.

Mine is VS Touxh / either Luxilion Timo 1.10mm or big banger ace 18.
