Confession of a Zverev Fan

Nadalgaenger

G.O.A.T.
I’m an unabashed Zverev fan, and I think my posting history shows that.

However, I’m becoming increasingly annoyed by all the Zverev hype after the WTF win. My social media feed is full of Zverev posts from all possible media outlets, including a long piece in the Economist.

Am I happy that he won? Of course. But let’s not forget that Dimitrov won the same event last year. How did 2018 turn out for Him?

Zverev hasn’t truly “arrived” until he lifts a slam trophy. I HOPE that we’ll see that happen soon but there are no guarantees in tennis or life.

Another trash Nadal fan throwing shade on a great young player with lies and obfuscations. When did Dimitrov ever win 3 MS 1000 titles + ranked top 4 at the age of 21?

Unabashed Z fan: I agree with what you say, but I don’t understand your avatar selection.

Every time I start to get tired with this new hype, I just remember how everyone was ignoring him and hyping other NextGen players a few weeks ago. Or even worse, how some people were writing him off and posting ugly things about him, even well-known journalists.

So no, I'm not annoyed. I'll enjoy every second of this new hype until it dissappears when he loses in the first round of the AO against a qualifier 8-B

Nah, he'll make the QF this time. Probably his first SF.

Djoko was certainly closer to his peak than Fed, but yes neither was at peak. However, as has been shown by Fed the last few years, old Fed way past peak >>>> 90% of the tour.
That is an illusion. Federer himself said in 2015 he was playing his best ever tennis due to improvements, so why would he stop improving? He is even better as a player today with a lot of newly learned skills.

Not to mention your 30s is when you hit your physical peak. You only start to go downhill in your late 40s and 50s.

Djokovic was at his peak too. He also said he was. Why would we doubt him?

This sarcasm works better on a Fed hater ;)

was rooting for zverev but agree that he hasn’t arrived until he’s won a GS. would be a shame to end up like rios.

I almost feel much the same. I think we're going to find out that WTF is not really all that important to the general fan. I'm expecting Zverev to have less of a fan reception than Chung for making Auz Open SF with some nice wins so best to just soak up all the attention and enjoy while it lasts.

I think we share the same fear (a well-founded one) that Zverev will not meet minimum fan expectations like multiple slam SFs next year. Davydenko, Nalbandian, Corretja (lol) anyone? 2019 should be an even better year and shame on fools like Robbie Koenig who expected Zverev to slump this year.:-D Still too much pushery in the Zedrot game to start mopping up at majors right away.

I understand you OP.
OTOH, I think the hype is deserved this time.

Sure, Djokerer weren't at their best, but before the WTF, Z looked like he should've been in the Maldives. Something happened, and Z's serve went 'boom'. He was hitting 132+mph for fun, mostly hit 137-139mph, and a decent amount in the 140-142mph range (see video). He's known as a consistent grinder (stop that Z!), even though he's 6'6", and moves very well for such a tall guy. Now he seems to have added a Raonic/Isner-level serve. I don't doubt Lendl will impove his biggest weakness, the FH (likely some improvements on volleys too). That's a scary thought.

Yes, Z has no slam SF yet, but in 2019, I would be surprised if he 'doesn't' make a SF. The WTF win could be the breakout he needed. The hype could be wrong, but this time in particular, it could also be very right. It's a good chance to over-hype (after a big title beating both Djokerer where they've dominated in the last decade), unlike other hypes (after winning 'one' big match).

If Z doesn't deliver in 2019, then it's just more of the same not unlike other hypes. But if Z 'does' deliver, then it's great for tennis. Hype? Sure, but win or win. ;)

Let's celebrate this champion. The finest gladiator the sands has ever seen.

I predict a very bright future for him. He’ll surely be adding slams to his trophy cabinet, and more gold chains to his neck.

The Dimitrov situation is a bad analogy. He essentially won by ducking anyone decent in the draw.

Even the guy he beat in the final he had lost to earlier in the tourney!

Zverev, on the other hand, couldnt have been more convincing in his victory.

He had to play the best two indoor players of this era and he beat them both without dropping a set.

This guy or Tsitsipas is the next new No. 1.

Get ready to kiss the ring.

Elaborating on what I already said, we’ll kiss his ring (he needs to buy one to pair with his Richard Mille), and he’ll chew his necklaces.

He reminds me of Willem Dafoe

I could not experience 90s Clay peak, luckily I will be witnessing @Sabratha ’s one.

You must try to understand the genius of it all. Back in 2015 both here and in MTF there were swarms of posters like Chico and Tennisfan3 who used repeat this "Fraud is peak , Novak BOAT because tennis evolves" . They were completely relentless in their postings.

Sabratha is copying them word for word, and the best part is, even though I love Djokovic, now their entire logic applies to Novak word for word.

Dimitrov beat Goffin twice

I think he will have big chance once reach 2nd week of slams. The variety players troubles his game, usually in first week. Fred is old already and can't execute in the later stages.

By the time he reach SF and F, the players there use pushing and standard rallies which suits his game.

The few times he was out early in GS, he cannot repeat his energy in 3rd set or destroyed by variety.

for months it was djoker trolls now it's zvevmerelystinky trolls....

Can we have one thread where only the adults are allowed to post?

Has Zverev arrived?

You know I just have to chime in here briefly. I was standing no more than about 10 feet away from him while he was on a practice court at the USO this year, and I've got to tell you, it was pretty freaking awe-inspiring. Which then leads me to the conclusion that if THAT guy can't break through further than he has, just how more awesome (apologies for the horrible grammar) are those he can't get past?
