What exactly is aramid? Is it a type of construction or a type of material? Is it the same as kevlar? I have a pack of Ashaway Crossfire. The main string is kevlar but they call it aramid. Any idea? Thanks!

aramid is a material (just like nylon is a material, aluminum is a material, etc, etc) and is the generic name for kevlar.

kevlar is a brand name that is registered by DuPont.

According to the Physics and Technolog of Tennis, there are five functional groups (mers) used to build polymers. Amide (nylon), ether, aromatic, ester, and ketone. Kevlar uses both amides and aromatics in building the poly chain. Aramid is a shortening of "aromatic polyamide." Kevlar is the trademarked name for Duponts version of aramid.
