Connors gets the nod as a WC who lost the first two sets of his magical run and then beat a red hot Haarhuis in the QFs after the Dutch player had smoked #1 seed Becker two rounds earlier. The comeback vs Krickstein in 4R from 2-1 sets down and 2-5 down in the fifth to win in a TB on his 39th birthday on Labor Day was literally “giving the people what they want!”

A more impressive run than both was that of Pancho Gonzales, who was also a semifinalist, at his worst surface, at the age of 40 years and 3 months in RG 1968.
8-B

Stan is better than anyone Connors played, but relatively speaking, Otte, Ruud, and Mayer are not.

Pancho beat the amateur king Emerson over five sets in QF. That's as good a slap in the face as any, losing to the ancient pro goat on the most demanding surface aptly demonstrating how superior the pros were initially.
