Connors's special events

Here is an e-mail by my French colleague Jean-Marie about Connors's special events.
Has anyone some answers about the missing results (see the red characters) or some corrections to propose ?
Thank you :

Bonjour Cher Carlo,
Jean-Marie.

The results for the following tournaments are missing from Jean-Marie's list:

1970 San Diego Championships (9-15 November)
1982 Montreal Molson Light Challenge Cup (29 September - 3 October)
1983 Toronto Molson Challenge (8-13 February)

They're mentioned on the French Wikipedia: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Connors, but it has only the final results.

Also, 1990 Forest Hills WCT Tournament of Champions (20-26 August) is missing. Here're the results:

1R : Bye
2R : Connors def. Seguso 6-2 4-6 6-0
QF : Lendl def. Connors 3-6 7-5 1-0 RET

ADDITIONS

connors lost qf kansas city to borowiak 1973; pasarell won the event
connors beat mcenroe sf frankfurt 1979

CORRECTION

connors lost to both lendl and macnamara at toronto feb 1982 in the round robin stages and failed to qualify for the sfs

Thank you for the answers.

BTURNER : (Los Angeles Southern California Championships (CA, USA) may, 3-9 : F Pancho Gonzales d. Connors 6-4 4-6 6-1).

Connors also played Gonzales in the 1971 PSW final, Sep 20-26 : Gonzales again the winner 36 63 63.
In 1973 apparently (according to the ITF & ATP sites) Connors met Pancho twice with these times Connors the winner, Columbus July30-Aug 5, QF 67 63 63 and PSW again Sep 17-23, 2nd round (R32) 76 63.
So to date the win-loss head-to-head record is 2-2 (2-0 Pancho in 71 and 2-0 Jimbo in 73)

I tried to update the data of the huge research done by Hoodjem .
The work of Hoodjem was excellent , my low-level but I tried to add missing information thanks to the internet .
There are still some results , but my little work ends here .

I added the titles also challenge matches in order to have a picture of all , the exhibitions / challenges / invitational tournaments unclassified by ATP , but only won by the American .

In summary we have :
1 ) challenge/exhibitions matches
2 ) 8 -men tournament formula - Masters ( 2 round robin , semifinals + 2 , + final )
3 ) Tournaments real ( Beckenham , Louisville , Stowe )
4 ) round robin 4 -men , without final ( 70s )
5 ) round robin 4 - men with final ( 70s )
6 ) 4 -men tournament

Conclusions

The research I think it dutiful to better frame the 70s and 80s and the career of Connors, which I think is the central figure in the history of the Open Era because it meas with Laver and Agassi, through Nastase and Becker.

I do not think all the hits in the events no-ATP modifying the career Connors, although some events are considered significant.

I see to list them:

1) Challenge matches won in Las Vegas vs. Laver and Newcombe (the following two events and won against Orantes & Nastase not have the same impact).

2) Exhibition matches vs Borg (the last performances of Swedish)

3) great titles between all those evidence no-ATP (Wikipedia)
- 2 Rosemont (Chicago) Michelob Light Challenge,
- 2 Molson Invitational (Toronto / Montreal)
- 2 North Miami Beach Nastase-Hamptons Invitational
- 1 Frejus Carre d'As Invitational (great summer tournament in French Riviera - Cote d'Azur)
- 1 Melbourne Mazda Super Challenge (good australian event),
- 4 Tokyo Suntory Cup, the best performance in 4-men after Boca Raton,

Connors, Borg, Gerulaitis and Panatta did a mini-tour of Europe participating in two exhibitions:

1) Copenhagen (exhibition USA vs Europe) ... not a tournament but an exhibition
+ Adriano Panatta 6-4 6-1
+ Bjorn Borg 6-4 6-2

2) Braun Tennis Cup Munich (GER) ... a quadrangular tournament
1R: Adriano Panatta W 7-5 6-1

Continuous research ( on the newspapers of the time over the Internet ) the results of special events won by the American .

It does not change the career of Connors but I think it is important to understand the no-ATP tournaments that he, Mac , Borg , Lendl played in the 70s and 80s .

Louisville International Classic was in 1980 at a tournament in which 7draws Connors firstround bye , then :
SF : Pat Dupre W 7-6 3-6 6-1
F : Eddie Dibbs W 6-2 6-3

In 1985 he won a exhibtion match vs Curren to Cape Town - Southafrica : + 2-6 7-6 7-6 6-4

1986 Amelia Island Du Pont All American Tennis Championships , not beat Dave Pate in semis but the firts round, in semis beating Jimmy Arias , could not find the score:
1R : Dave Pate W 6-4 7-6
S : Jimmy Arias W
F : Aaron Krickstein W 4-6 6-2 6-0

In conclusion I can not find opponents:
- 1R Beaver Creek Kiva 1983

It could be his stat allowed to get a bye directly into the semifinals .

No, in 1983 is 4 men tournament, not 8.

July 28, 1983
Reno Gazette-Journal from Reno, Nevada
Connors will meet Texan Steve Denton at Beaver Creek in Saturday's first round. Roscoe Tanner and Sweden's Mats Wilander will tangle in Saturday's other opening-round match. The winners will meet in the final Sunday afternoon.

Considerations tournaments no-ATP 70s and 80s
1) The Invitationals in practice did not exist until 1975, the few who had played an insignificant value
2) The system from 1968 to 1972 was divided into two circuits, well separated Grand Prix and WCT, only the US Open all participating
3) In 1972, it adds a smaller circuit organized by Riordan and named IPA, in which they played only two of the top 10: Nastase and Connors
4) You can not consider the tournament circuit IPA- Riordan as Invitationals because they gave ATP points and gave points to the circuit IPA but they look like
5) Riordan & Connors give boost to putting exhibitions against the ATP / Grand Prix / WCT
6) Connors challenge before Laver and Newcombe then to Las Vegas in two challenge matches in 1975 of capital importance for the future development
7) In contrast to what is common to think, Connors attended a few special events in the 70s
8) Borg instead participated in many special events and won them almost all between 1976 and 1979, almost all 4draws, the most important in Boca Raton and Tokyo
9) Borg is very distracting with Invitationals, especially in 1978, loses sight of the ATP, they will do the same Connors and Lendl in the 80s
10) In the 70s they were particularly in demand in the Invitationals 4draws, semifinals two more final.
11) In the 80s changes the shape of the invitational by 4draws to 8draws formula ATP Finals, become real tournaments.
12) There is also the formula with normal seeding knockout, 8draws.
13) While Borg was the king 70s, Lendl becomes the king 80s although Connors and Mac win many special events.
14) In Antwerp, Rosemont and Montreal / Toronto are held major events.
15) Borg if he had participated in any ATP tournament in more instead of invitational probably would have been number 1 ATP in 1978.
16) Connors had he participated in any ATP tournament in more instead of invitational probably would have been number 1 in 1982 and perhaps in 1983.
17) Lendl has won many well-distributed, if he attended more tournaments ATP tournaments ATP would win many more

Conclusion:
Borg in the 70s, in the 80s Lendl and Connors in both decades dedicated themselves to no-atp Invitationals because much more profitable and less tiring. Their successes overall are not objectively be considered because half are not relevant and only a few titles are important but we must consider that gicavano in another era, where the players were playing every week in the Grand Prix circuit (or WCT ) or Invitationals, which is why they have won so many titles and have won more titles if they had focused only on the main circuit (Grand Prix + WCT)

"The exhibitions are ruining to tennis. I'm dismayed over what happened to the clay court championships to Indianapolis.
This is the tournament that always ranked second only to the French as an important clay court event.
All the great champions have played is Indianapolis built a new multi-million dollars 10.000 set stadium.
And what happens? Not one of the top six players showed up.
A big clump of the top men players (Lendl, Wilander, Connors, Noah...) were competing instead in a 300.000 dollars 8-men exhibition series at near Newport Beach".

You are addressing a big methodological problem for evaluating the 70s, the question of invitational events or exhibitions. The overlook isn't always correct. The WCT series of 20 tournaments started in 1971, the Grand Prix series of the ILTF in 1970, so the division between ILTF and WCT started really in 1971. Earlier in 1968-1970, we had NTL, WCT, combined pro tournaments, open tournaments and pure amateur tournaments. Most are not represented in the ATP stats section. Some four man tournaments in open era were quite important, because they were played for big prize money for the winner and were televized to a great public. I think of the BBC 2 tournament at Wembley in 1968 and 69, which had one of the biggest prize money then, and of the Pepsi Grand Slam, which was a hard fought affair in the late 70s. I like to divide events into invitationals for real prize money and exhibitions with fixed appearance money. I think, all those non ATP Events are to be closely studied, how much they were really competitive, which means for real prize money.

Given that it is difficult to compare the eras , the division imposed by the ATP since 1973 I think is correct , and that is:
1 ) ATP ( including WCT and IPA ) were not by invitation but participants were called up according to the charts ( GP , WCT , IPA .. )
2 ) no- ATP tournaments ( named Invitationals ) are those where the tournament organizer invited those who wanted to .

Sometimes it happened that some tournaments 2 ) were much more important than one 1) that could be kind Master250, but they should not be considered in the calculation of the ATP . ... because invitational..

In tournaments 1 ) the ATP has considered :
1 ) Pepsi Grand Slam although 4draws ,
2 ) Challenge Cup WCT and WCT TOC although Invitationals

ATP considers all no-invitational tournaments except those organized by ATP & WCT.

What the ATP accepts or not, is a different problem. Some posters here, including Lucio and others, have written to Greg Sharko and The ATP at Ponte Vedra and triggered the inclusion of some invitationals on the ATP stats side over the last couple of years, which were not recognized before, like the WCT tournaments of Champions. The recognition of the ATP was always arbitrary, every WCT tournaments was a sort of invitational, because a select group of players played in there, with some fillers from outside. For the first years of open era, the ATP stats are simply incomplete, with many important pro and open events missing. I think, even the very first open tournament 1968 at Bournemouth was included only a couple of years ago.
I think, the bigger problem is still the clear distinction between invitationals for prize money, which we should use for the evaluation of the top Players of the 70s and early 80s, and pure exhibitions, with much less competitive worth.

It is not easy to retrieve information about exhibitions 70 and 80, but you can consider this:
1) the titles won ATP is not right to implement them with Invitationals
2) the Invitationals are however considered separately and if possible divided in two, between performances not relevant and important performances
3) does not distort the careers of players but they are historically significant because they are a real circuit apart, stronger players they preferred the Australian Open !!
4) changing a bit 'the outcome of the year-end number one in a few years.

McEnroe won 27 Invitationals including 12 tournaments 8 draws
In my opinion 6 are relevant:
1981-85-87 Challenge of champions
1983-86-88 ECC Antwerp

Borg won 37 Invitationals including 9 in 8 draws
In my opinion 8 are relevant:
1976-77 Hilton Head
1978-82 Suntory Cup
1979 Milan
1979 Frankfurt
1979 Holland Roxi Int.
1972 Sidney Akai

Lendl 57 invitational including 37 to 8 draws
In my opinion 13 are relevant:
• 1984-1985 Suntory Cup
• 1981 Milan
• 1982-84 Molson
• 1982-84-86-87-89 Antwerp ECC
• 1983-86-88 Challenge of Champions

Connors invitational 38 (not 40 as claimed by Wikipedia)
In my opinion 12 are relevant:
• 1980-81-83-86 Tokyo Suntory Cup (Japan)
• 1979 Frejus Carre d'As Invitational (FRA)
• 1982-1984 Rosemont Michelob Light Challenge
• 1982-1983 Montreal Molson Invitational
• 1982-1983 North Miami Beach Nastase-Hamptons Invitational
• 1983 Newport Beach Tennis Club High Stakes

CONNORS GETS BETTER OF MCENROE
Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe, a pair of thirtysomething left-handers heading in the same direction, crossed rackets Friday night, but each one could have spun his like a compass.

Where are they going with their tennis? How much they still will play, is becoming something of a preoccupation for Connors and McEnroe, who played an exhibition at the Forum, the Forum Tennis Challenge, which Connors won, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, before 11,986.

Winners of 15 Grand Slim titles between them, Connors and McEnroe are both planning to scale back the amount they will play next year.

"If I play eight, that will be a lot," said Connors, who turns 40 Sept. 2, and hinted he might even pull out of this year's French Open and Wimbledon.

CONNORS SHOWS HIS STUFF
RIDGEFIELD, Conn. (UPI) Tennis star Jimmy Connors put his best sneaker forward Sunday in an exhibition match in the Fairfield County International tennis championship. which he had bowed out of because of illness. With his on-court antics and offside comments, Connors managed to dissolve some hard feelings among some 1,750 fans who had expected to see the top seed in action throughout the week-long tournament. His initial civil welcome from the crowd turned into a standing ovation after he won the hour-long match, 6-3, 7-6,

Connors, who is headed for against third-seeded Vitas Gerulaitis, who had also withdrawn from the tournament because of a bronchial disorder. Off-court. Connors signed autographs, held a news conference and politely complimented his hosts at the Sugar Hollow Racquet Club, for whom he offered to play the evening’s exhibition after his last-minute tournament cancellation. Following a week off, Connors said he was tired after his first set. “It was good for me to get out and get some exercise, but I must get in better condition,” he said.

another rest week, said he's been playing too much tennis so far this year and wants to cut down. “I have other things on my mind and other people, some not having to do with tennis," the 23-year-old Connors said. Connors reiterated his desire to play on the Davis Cup team but said he didn’t "want to deprive anyone of the chance of playing in it.” Connors has never played on the Davis Cup team. “Someone said if I joined, it would ruin their morale,” Connors said. “Arthur Ashe wants to play with his friends and I’m not one of his friends."

McEnroe, who ends his exhibition tour this week to take an indefinite leave of absence from the professional circuit, said he never thought about playing in the Olympics while growing up in the New York area.
'Itwas something we didn't consider as youngsters, but it's a beautiful experience.'
Although McEnroe said it would be a mistake to let professional players compete in the Olympics, he said the event should be 'completely open' if proswere allowed to play.
McEnroe earlier told the crowd of 5,000 that he would return to the gamedespite his leave of absence.
'There's a few more fights left in both of us before we quit,' he said.
Connors, who has taken time off the last three months, said it was a good idea for McEnroe to stop playing for awhile.
McEnroe, 26, last week was granted a reduction in his tennis workload by the Men's International Professional Council.
'I think it's an important thing to do for anybody because of the pressure on the top players and the amount of travelling we do. We're not just robots and machines. We have businesses and tennis and families to take care of.'
He said McEnroe deserved 'to do whatever he wants. For what he's done for his career and for the game, they should let him do whatever he wants to. As long as he stays in the game.'
Connors, who is scheduled to appear in the Indoor Tennis Championship in Philadlelphia this week, lagged through the first set against McEnroe, but fought back to take the second and third sets.

The previous mark was 15,125, nov 15 1985, at the Met Center in Bloomington, Minnesota when Bjorn Borg faced John McEnroe.

VIEWS OF SPORT
VIEWS OF SPORT; WHAT'S THE POINT AND PENALTY OF TENNIS SUSPENSION?
By NEIL AMDUR; Neil Amdur is editor in chief of World Tennis Magazine.
Published: May 25, 1986

JIMMY CONNORS has been on a winning streak of sorts. In recent weeks, Connors has beaten Kevin Curren, Stefan Edberg, Mats Wilander, Aaron Krickstein and Bjorn Borg (three straight times). None of these victories at events in Tulsa, Tokyo and New Orleans can rival the French Open, which starts tomorrow in Paris, or Wimbledon next month. And Connors's activity is almost certain to further confuse many sports followers: After all, he is currently serving a 70-day suspension for outrageous behavior in a Grand Prix tournament in February in Florida.
The fact that tennis players can make more money while under suspension than as legitimate pros in tournament play defies logic. The Men's International Professional Tennis Council insists that the 70-day suspension, $25,000 fine and ''long-term'' effect to Connors's computer ranking are more than sufficient penalties for his major offense (Connors walked off the court in the fifth set of a semifinal match with Ivan Lendl in the Lipton International Players Championships to protest a call).
But a representative of Connors's management team said recently that his client ''made more money than you and I will ever make'' in the recent series of exhibitions. The representative declined to estimate a dollar total, but $250,000 would not be far-fetched.

The reference to the exhibition won vs
- Curren ... final 8draws in Tulsa
- Edberg ... semifinal 4draws Suntory Cup in Tokyo
- Wilander ... final 4draws Suntory Cup in Tokyo
- Borg ... three exhibitions match in Tokyo in early May 1986
- the victory over Krickstein in New Orleans not know what it refers to .

Chicago Tribune - Suspension Profits Connors
June 06, 1986
Don`t feel too sorry for Jimmy Connors, who finishes serving his 10-week suspension this week. One of tennis` bad boys managed just fine, thank you, during his banishment from the pro tour.
``He`s made so much money in the last 10 weeks it`s unbelievable,`` said one tennis insider. ``Probably more than he would have made on the tour.``
Connors was assessed a $20,000 fine along with the suspension by the Men`s International Pro Tennis Council because of his refusal to finish a semifinal match at the Lipton Players Championships in February.
Although banned from the tour, he was free to play in exhibitions such as the Suntori Cup in Japan and the Bank of Oklahoma Classic (winning both). He also played three exhibitions against retired pro Bjorn Borg in Japan. ProServe Inc., the sports management and marketing firm that looks after Connors, said it couldn`t comment on his earnings during the suspension. Editors at Tennis magazine, however, who have been trying to keep track of his earnings, estimate he has made at least several hundred thousand dollars.

Edberg Lags, but Catches Up to Beat Connors
November 20, 1987|LISA DILLMAN | Special to The Times
The Stefan Edberg world tour pulled into Los Angeles for an exhibition at the Forum Thursday night, sputtered and eventually pulled out a three-set victory over Jimmy Connors.

Connors, who was substituting for Ivan Lendl, pushed Edberg before losing 4-6, 6-4, 7-6, in front of 9,390 spectators. Near the end, Edberg looked fatigued, probably the result of of jet lag.

It's not uncommon for players to live a virtual whirlwind existence, but Edberg's schedule is incredible, if not a bit chaotic.

LOS ANGELES TIMES
SHE SIDELINES : McEnroe Beats Connors Again
November 22, 1989
| From Times wire services
SAN DIEGO — John McEnroe beat Jimmy Connors Tuesday night for his second exhibition win in two nights over his longtime rival.

McEnroe used his only service break of the match to clinch the victory before 6,821 fans at the San Diego Sports Arena in a charity event. In a Monday night match in Los Angeles, McEnroe recorded a 6-4, 6-4 triumph.

Connors had four break points in the third game of the final set with a chance to go ahead, but McEnroe eventually prevailed in the game that lasted 18 points, the longest in the match.

The two players joked throughout the match, and at one point, each even played a sample point on their knees. That point, which didn't count in the match, was decided when Connors used his head to send the ball over the net.

Robert Seguso, a doubles specialist, defeated veteran Jimmy Connors, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5, Wednesday night in an exhibition tennis match at the Forum.

The 26-year-old Seguso, 10 years younger than Connors, survived one match point at 4-5 of the third set. He hit two service winners to tie the score, 5-5, then broke Connors in the next game with two forehand winners. He held serve for the match in a game that featured his 11th ace.

1985: exhibition match vs Lendl - Boston
- 6-3 6-2

BOSTON -- Ivan Lendl won his exhibition tennis match Tuesday night after Jimmy Connors bowed to the gods of Boston Garden.

The Czech star was in the process of defeating Connors 6-3, 6-2, when the American was given a reminder of who the hometown heroes are.
During a break in play to repair the court surface, Connors entertained the crowd of 8,372. First he hit a ball to the ceiling and used a cradle catch with his racquet. The second time he caught it behind his back with one hand, but the ball grazed one of the Boston Celtics' championship banners on the way down.
'Hey, don't touch those banners,' came a yell from the audience.
Connors, mocking fear, looked up to the banners, made a cross in the air and with arms held aloft in supplication to the flags, said, 'Sorry, sorry. I didn't mean it.'

Off-Form McEnroe Beats Connors in Exhibition Match at the Forum
December 12, 1985|JULIE CART | Times Staff Writer
The minute John McEnroe can shake the nightmare of the Australian Open, he will begin to play the kind of tennis he's capable of playing.

He's not there yet.

The specter of what happened in Australia was still with McEnroe Wednesday night when he met Jimmy Connors in an exhibition match in front of 9,693 fans at the Forum--memories of the probing reporters, ever-present photographers, and grass courts that played like bad rental carpet.

McEnroe beat Connors, who was playing in his first match after being out five weeks with a back injury, 6-4, 6-2, in the Forum Championship Tennis Challenge.

But it was not vintage McEnroe.

McEnroe spent the better (or worst) part of this month fending off questions about the status of his relationship with actress Tatum O'Neal. So persistent were the media in Australia that McEnroe finally exploded. In a scene that made the evening news around the world, McEnroe pushed and spat on a photographer in a hotel.

Here is an e-mail by my French colleague Jean-Marie about Connors's special events.
Has anyone some answers about the missing results (see the red characters) or some corrections to propose ?
Thank you :

Bonjour Cher Carlo,
Jean-Marie.

KG, excellent info. I was missed some of the matches.

My problem is how to deal with Inglewood 85 and 86. It was a tournament with RR sessions in different months. Do you know if they were any rules for the tournament and for the winner if such.
