Considering Nadal withdrew from Paris, was Federer's withdrawal a mistake?

What if Nadal will withdrew from WTF aswell, that would mean Fed had quite a good shot at YE#1 if he participated in Paris.

In any case, lets assume Nadal withdraws from WTF and Fed gets max 1500 points.

That would make the rankings in 2017:

Nadal 10.645
Federer 10.505

Meaning Fed would have a pretty decent shot at #1 in 2017 even before clay season, if Nadal crashes out of AO soon for example.

I have no reason to believe that Nadal's withdrawal was not genuinely motivated by an injury, but I also believe it was facilitated by his having clinched the year-end No. 1 ranking. You can't just drop Federer back into the Paris draw and expect that Nadal would have acted exactly the same way.

Also, you're assuming that Fed himself had no physiological reason for pulling out of the event, and that he could readily do well in Paris and still win the ATP Finals.

He could have played on one leg and beat Filip if he wanted to. If he wanted to avoid Fed he could have then just withdrawn from the SF since I think a SF would be enough points.
It's all secured. He'd rather not lose another to Fed than to pursue an elusive title. Also, Fed gets to cool off and age out. Best to rest up for now. Win-win.

I would say no. Given the year Fed has had, he probably could have won this event blindfolded. I guess he didn't see it as being worth it.
