Convince me to root for Nadal

Hood_Man

G.O.A.T.
Friends, Romans, Trolls, lend me your ears.

Perhaps it's the anticipation speaking, or maybe the alcohol, but I offer you Nadal fans (and neutrals) a challenge:

Convince me (a Federer fan), someone who was left devastated after the 2009 AO loss, and frustrated at the repeated Federer losses to Nadal in subsequent years, to root for Nadal tomorrow afternoon as he attempts to win his NINTH French Open in 10 seasons, and why I shouldn't root for Novak, someone who is perhaps poised to become the 3rd player in 5 years to achieve a career slam, and most likely to prevent Parappa the Rafa from equaling Fedora's slam record!

This thread, by the way, is for fun! Perhaps it's my good nature, my laid back approach to life, or the several glasses of wine I've drunk this evening, but if you have daft opinions you want to share, share them! If you have dumb photoshops, post them! If you have serious, intellectual discussion to begin, air it!

Let's have some good natured downtime before tomorrows blood bath: Why should I, a Roger Federer fan, root for Rafael Nadal in tomorrow's Final?

Have at it! :D

Count how many times Nadal scratches his butt. If it is an even number, he will win the match. If it is an odd number, he will lose the match. Just remember, you heard it from here.

The greater Nadal becomes - unless he surpasses Federer - the more Federer's own greatness is magnified, since he won so much and was defeated only by another player who was himself amazingly great, and maybe the 2nd greatest in history.

Because Nadal's dominance at the French may never be surpassed or even equalled ever again, and you are witnessing an extraordinary event in history.

Umm you should not unless you got a lobotomy? Heck, I bet you'd switch back to rooting for Fed when the post-lobotomy downtime expires.

He already broke the record last year, what difference does one more title make? It's just so boring seeing the same thing year in, year out- people want to see a new champion crowned.

lol if you don't like him for whatever reason I won't try to change your perception of him. If you don't appreciate him as a tennis great or enjoy his tennis, please don't force yourself to root for him. To root for him or not, let the answer come from within.

I can't count that high at the best of times, never mind when I'm under the influence!

No no, I leave you responsible for that. Tomorrow, I'm relying on you

Root for him because then you won't be disappointed when he lifts the trophy tomorrow.

Root for Djokovic instead- RG desperately needs a new champion!

This is my thinking, too. I do acknowledge, however, that as a Federer fan I'm open to criticism for rooting for a guy who dominated the AO & USO and Wimbledon tournaments for 5 years (even if he didn't win, he at least reached a semi/final), whilst simultaneously not wishing someone else to do the same, but my answer to that is simple: I'm a Federer fan, not a Nadal fan. If I want Fed to win every match, so be it. If a Nadal fan wishes Nadal to win every match, so be it.

I don't need to enjoy Nadal's wins, anymore than a Nadal fan had to enjoy Fed's wins back in the day, but I do have a grudging respect for what Nadal's done.

Hell, I'm really grateful for Nadal's FO dominance as it allowed Fed's victory in 2009 to be so special.

But... I'd rather Murray had won on Friday, or Novak to win tomorrow.

...Unless someone convinces me otherwise!

The crowd are still lukewarm on Nadal despite his dominance of the tournament. He deserves to win them over once and for all.

Let's have prizes!!

If you convince me thirdly, you get to enjoy a roller coaster ride with Michael Nadal, whilst simultaneously trying to eat ice scream (the "99" variety of course). Bonus points for not spilling any.

Second place goes to the person who almost convinces me, who gets to enjoy a trip to Ireland with Suresh, and a tennis lesson on the deck of the Sea Cat (Catamaran) in the middle of terrible weather.

First place goes to whoever makes the most convincing argument, who gets to come with me next Christmas to watch Star Wars Episode VII in the Imax cinema in London. Possibly with Federer/Nadal, depending on whether my restraining order has expired or not.

Have at it!

Nadal has great respect for Andy Murray and Roger Federer and cried when Fed won RG in 2009. Nadal gets a lot of unfair hate for being in the shadow of the widely perceived GOAT (who is having his status challenged by a direct contemporary).

You need convincing to root for Nadal, Hood_Man? :?

Yes I do my fellow Welshie! And if you don't try harder, you'll have to accept the consolation prize of an evening with Max Boyce!

And Owen Money!

On a loop.

For eternity

This is why I, personally, can't feel any ill will towards Nadal. He's too damned nice! I wouldn't for a million years reverse the 2008 Wimbledon final. Although it would have been awesome to see Federer complete the ultimate comeback, Nadal was far and away the better player that day, and I think I would have felt more disappointed for Rafa than I would have felt happy for Fed (as I did in the 2009 final for Roddick/Federer).

It's frustrating to watch Nadal win again and again (against players I like), but it's impossible not to like the person :)

Why wouldn't you cheer for Djokovic?

Do you really want Nadal to stop winning slams now? Imagine he makes it to sixteen at the end of his career, falling just shy of Fed's tally. He'll be haunted by the matches that got away from him, such as the Australian Open finals in 2012/2014, and the 2007 Wimbledon title decider. In retirement, Rafa's obssessive mind would start fixating over all the opportunities that slipped through his fingers like so many grains of clay. It would be the kind of anguish that Roger is already so familiar with, what with his miserable break point conversion against Nadal in numerous championship contests(especially AO '09, and Wimbledon '08).

As comprehensive as Nadal's h2h with Fed is, sixteen slams for Rafa would leave the Swiss with a crucial advantage in all statistical analyses of their achievements going forward. The Mallorcan likes to play down the significance of their respective trophy cabinets, but behind the media facade you know it's his goal to outstrip Federer in every way he can.

Many people still think Federer has a slam in him, and I'm one of them. I don't think he's lost much potency in his game. If anything it's his fitness that has deteriorated in recent years. But that's less of a factor on grass. Imagine Rafa has another early round loss at SW19 in a couple of weeks, then picture how well Roger could do in his absence. We could be talking eighteen slams to fourteen, if Djokovic loses on Sunday.

Support Nadal to sixteen slams, and let him endure the pain you've suffered as a Fed fan when he can't quite surpass his rival's laurels. We're talking about a man who hates to lose, who even when playing recreational golf with friends needs to stress that they're playing a 'hostile match'. At the professional level, I can hardly conceive of how defeat burns inside a guy like that.

Why wouldn't you cheer for Djokovic?

Good question Chico. My easy answer is... I would cheer for Novak! When he plays aggressively, I could root for him till the end of time! His form in 2011 was phenomenal, and when his aggressive play reappears I think hes a delight to watch!

It doesn't take any convincing to root for him, unless he was playing against Murray, Federer, or an underdog :)

Why? Should anyone try to get you to root for any player?

Why? Should anyone try to get you to root for any player?

Go on, have a go! To make life easier for you, I rooted for Nadal to win Monte Carlo 2010, and to beat Davydenko in Doha 2011!

Admittedly it's not often, but it's better than nothing! :D

Trolls, lend Hood_Man his 'napkin'

Just because Fed's no longer in the tourney…..fan…..boy……trolls……..like…….yourself………have….to….go….this….'fanboytroll'….route…??

I know you attack Federer fanboys on sight (while being 100% okay with Nadal fanboys since you are probably a Nadal fan I figure), but HoodMan is probably the least obnoxious fan (in every fanbase) on this forum. I have never seen him bash anyone and this thread is hardly mean-spirited.

Are you being purposely ignorant, or have you reached a level where you think folks actually give a rats azz who you root for?

As a fan of any player, it's insulting to think one needs your approval.

Trolling thread this....

Trust some of the more miserable posters on this board to show needless levels of cynicism to a harmless thread. Never in doubt.

You mean my impending hangover?

Yes and I think you should put down your glass and go to bed and wake up all refreshed n ready to root for Djokovic to bring an end to the evil empire.

In short - You should root for someone you like, simples. If you don't like Nadal then you don't like him, it's not like you're getting paid to root for him.

And how do you support him up to exactly 16 ? how do you get him to stop there ? you'll give him a call to stop ? seems not very practicle ..

Many chances Nadal will get stuck under 16 if his health decline, but if not he has 4 more years to reach 19...

Just watch and enjoy !

Because Nadal's dominance at the French may never be surpassed or even equalled ever again, and you are witnessing an extraordinary event in history.

This right here. 500 years from now, people may still be talking about this guy Rafa during the FO and how no one has still come even close to 9 FO's. I love witnessing history.

I'll just say, this is not a reason to root against Nadal. Why ? Because Nadal is a competitor, and he admires Federer. yet everytime he faces Federer his duty as a professional tennis player is to try his best to beat his opponent whoever he is, even if he is GOD like Federer seems to be for his fans.

By giving your best you actually shows great respect to your opponent.

And it's not like Nadal hates Federer anyway, they are friends.

You win an evening with Max Boyce. May God have mercy on your soul...

Because when Roger cried unabashedly at the Australian Open, Nadal was the first to reach out to him and comfort him, and this brought a smile to Roger and made him realize that it was only a tennis macth he lost, nothing more!
How's that?

You also win! I hope your sea legs are working.
