Suda's Brazil look so mid

Copa America is wild.

Any idea why they put the ball in an old shoe box and have a kid bring it on whilst they play 90’s trance music?

My 2 favourite teams in the competition by far, Mexico and Ecuador, will directly battle it out in their Group B decider for a place in the knockout stages. I have to root for Mexico otherwise I'd face the wrath of my wife.

But I've always been a fan of Ecuador since travelling to the country and falling in love with it. They historically have a poor record in Copa Americas, and alongside Venezuela (traditionally a baseball country but safely through to the quarter-finals here), are one of the 2 CONMEBOL teams never to win it (or even reach a final).

The Mexican teams since about 2021 have been the worst since the 70s. They are absolute garbage and watching them play, is even more excrutiating than watching England play (and almost put me to sleep last Tuesday).

Regarding Uruguay, I’ve always admired them for continually being so good and continually churning out so many talented players, despite having a population lower than that of the 9th largest metro area in neighbouring Brazil. I doubt their set-up / federation is particularly wealthy as well.

And I’ve been a big fan of Bielsa for a while. Yes he definitely has his weaknesses, but IMO he has been such a hugely positive influence on the sport in general. I live in Leeds, who fans still generally idolise him.

I thought at the time of the last World Cup that he’d been great for either the USA and Mexico. But Uruguay has been a very good fit for him.

I watched Colombia’s win yesterday with a couple of Colombians I know. Happy they’re safely through.

A nice achievement by Canada to qualify for the knockout stages.

The decline of Chilean football, since they won those back to back Copa Americas, has been sad to see. I remember when during a short space of time, they dished out footballing lessons to Spain (in the 2014 World Cup), Brazil (in a World Cup qualifier), Mexico and Colombia (both in the 2016 Copa America). Yes they weren't going to continue racking up Copa America titles, but the decline has been so extreme.

From what I gather, their national federation are doing in a terrible job in terms of investing and focusing in youth development, not seeming to care. Plus quality of their league has also declined with Chilean clubs performing worse and worse in the CONMEBOL club competitions.

Through watching both England and Mexico today, the I'll have double the frustration.

At least there’s Ecuador and Spain willing to provide us with some entertainment!

Haven't watched any. No timezone excuses need to watch a couple games minimum.

Good time to get started!

USA about to go out in the group stages on home soil.

Colombia v Brazil should be a good one, then we’re onto the knockouts.

The fun begins :)

My goal is at least 2 matches. Seems like a good start Colombia Brazil.

Messi's injury minor?

Sounded like it might be a bad one at first, but news has been more positive the last few days.

Excellent choice! Colombia have been really fun to watch so far. Brazil have had a lot of criticism, but I’ve actually thought they’ve look really exciting and dangerous with the ball in both games. Without it? Not so much. @Kralingen has mentioned about their midfield not being great, which is definitely true. Opponents seem to go through them far too easily.

So unsurprisingly Mexico are out, after a typically toothless performance vs. Ecuador. As has been a common occurrence, when they arrived around Ecuador's penalty area, they often didn't know what to do next.

In the past year, their only win vs. CONMBEOL opposition was a 1-0 friendly win against Bolivia.

The 2018 World Cup, when Germany had no idea how to deal with their mad scientist tactics under Osorio, including defending set pieces with 3 players up front ready to counter-attack, feels like a lifetime ago and the decline post 2019 has been steep.

The FMF effectively manage Mexican football as a business, not caring about actual football development. I think they'd only be forced to change strategy, if Mexico failed to qualify for a World Cup (they're partially hosting the next one so will be there in 2026 and the expansion to 48 teams helps them in general), or the huge armies of devoted Mexican fans living in the USA (there's still a case to argue that the Mexican team are the best and most passionately supported sporting team in the US bar none) stop paying crazy money for their rinse and repeat friendlies there.

I stopped watching after 96 minutes, did I miss anything? ;)

Crazy ending to a very uninspiring game.

At least that drama woke people up, who understandably would have been put to sleep by garbage that preceded it.

Clearly justice was done as the penalty decision was overturned. The fact that it was awarded in the first place (to grant Mexico a potential and completely underserved get out of jail card) was ridiculous.

1 goal in 3 games, from the left-back Gerardo Arteaga (albeit a nice finish) against Jamaica, was pathetic going.

On a more positive note, Venezuela topping Group B with a perfect record was very impressive.

Fernando Batista is doing an excellent job with them so far, with very effective pressing and transitional play, with defensive steel in their midfield. And Salomón Rondón is still going strong, He plays for my favourite Liga MX team Pachuca (my father in law's home town team), helping them win the CONCACAF Champions League last month.

Venezuela, historically a baseball country, are the only CONMEBOL nation never to qualify for the World Cup, and only of the only two alongside Ecuador never to win the Copa America. If they beat Canada in the quarter-finals, they'll achieve their best ever Copa America run. It would be nice if they could maintain this momentum for the World Cup qualifiers, and book their ticket for the party in 2026.

On first viewing, the tackle didn’t look great (he was wrong side).. but it also looked like some serious embellishment went on with the way he went down. You’re right though, first replay they showed cleared it up, and the referee overturned it pretty quickly when he went to the monitor.

I don’t think Ecuador have much of a chance against Argentina. They had that friendly before the Copa started and I’m not sure Ecuador managed a shot.

Team referee not looking too competent as team US and A play Team Uruaguay. More watchable than anything Ive watched in the Euros,

Empty seat night again. Copa is a dead tournament. No wonder @Poisoned Slice sleeps through this mince
I played one match on top spin tonight, opponent started off as a gentleman, serving from the middle, but the return serve trait I'm using finally broke him to win the set, then he loses the gentleman persona, starts serving out wide, and I'm still getting them back. 0-30 at the start of set 2.

Then he quits and I win the Gucci trophy once more.
