Could Djokovic hypothetically become a Tier 1 great?

Honestly, even as a Djokovic fan the only way I can see him doing this would be if he accomplished the 4 in a row Grand Slam. However, this is not as impossible as people may think.

Consider that just this year he was in the finals of 3 slams and at the FO he made the semis, although that was pretty much the final. Lets assume he wins Australia (not a given, since Nadal and Murray are still around). But if he wins australia then his next challenge is the french. He can beat Nadal on clay, and he pushed Rafa to the limit at this year's FO. Its possible he can actually win it. After that is Wimbledon, and Nadal's grass form has basically disappeared, Murray is the only challenge there. If Djokovic has a good day and Murray isn't playing as well as he could, then Djokovic could possibly take out Murray on grass. Finally, going into the USO i think he would be on such a confidence high, and its on Hardcourt, his 2nd best slam, he would be able to complete the 4 in a row.

More than likely he never will though, his peak may already be over for all we know.

Where I define Tier 1 as Federer/Laver/Sampras, Tier 2 as Borg/Nadal and Tier 3 as Agassi/Connors/Lendl etc.

I wanted to create a scenario which is a stretch but still not out of reach (for example 17 slams is completely out of reach). Just for the sake of playing the game, let's say Djokovic ends up with the following record:

12 slams
175 weeks at no 1 (5th best)
4 consecutive year end no 1s (2011-2014)
Only player to win all masters events
Master Titles leader
Career Slam
3-4 WTF
80% + W-L record
Leading H2H vs 3 biggest rivals - Fed/Nadal/Murray

Would Djoker be considered a Tier 1 great in this scenario? When people have their GOAT debates, would his name be in the pool?

I had missed this the first time I read through. Is it possible kragster that you underestimated this achievement?

Definitely not. At this point I see 9 majors max for him, and with 9 majors I would still rank him below Connors, Lendl, Kramer, Perry, and possibly McEnroe given other statistics. In the event he doesnt ever win the French (good likelihood) he would even be below Agassi even with 9 majors. I am not sure if he will even reach 9 and might have less.

He is more likely to be at tier 3 type great, at absolute best. BTW Nadal is clearly a tier 1 great at this point.

i think he has a chance but it depends from the competion next 4 o 5 year..
The only ones able to stop Djokovic in major events are Del Potro and Murray..Federer and Nadal after 2014 i think will decline..I hope Nadal continuing winning slam for 2 years at least

If he somehow completes the CYGS then why would he not be considered a tier 1 great?

Irrelevant as it will never happen. Djokovic has only won more than 1 major once in his career, has already peaked as a player (and is in fact already on decline), and is going to win the CYGS. Sorry but just no.

TTW knowing nothing, as usual.

It's me TTW though I did think he'd have 14 titles at the end -- thereby retiring as a tier 1 great according to the standards then.

I still see Pete to be in tier 1 for what it's worth.

No...just no dude! Give it up...Sampras and Borg both belong to tier 2 now...big-3 moved ahead, i would argue Laver is still with them though for his famous double calendar slam...but Sampras and Borg definitely tier below...

Sampras is still in Tier 1
14 slams scored in his era is like 20+ now, 6 year end 1s and 286 weeks too.
Sampras is still the GOAT/Co-GOAT at Wimbledon and US Open.

Eh, that applies more to Borg than to Sampras, since Borg was playing 3 slams a year basically.

Eh, that applies more to Borg than to Sampras, since Borg was playing 3 slams a year basically.

Sampras played against significantly harder rivals than Borg did.

Note : all the opponents of Borg were older to him and this also coincides with a phase in ATP when pre open era greats were going down and average age of players was reducing in the top 100 every year ..... This benefitted Borg and youngsters..... the young age of top 10 stabilized in mid 80s and continued until late 90s, so this effectively means Sampras (& Boris Becker,. Edberg, Lendl etc etc) all played in the toughest eras of history, volatile period. So naturally Sampras > Borg despite all the hype of lot of slams won by 25. More than that we should see the competition too.

Borg's top rivals with whom he played most matches ( 38 out of 40 of them were oldies)

- Connors 23 matches played [ 4 years older to Borg]
- Vilas 22 matches played [4 years older to Borg]
- Nastase 18 matches played [10 years older to Borg]
- Gerulatis 18 matches played [2 years older to Borg]
- Ashe 17 matches played [13 years older to Borg]
- Orantes 16 matches played [7 years older to Borg]
- Tanner 16 matches played [5 years older to Borg]
- Panatta 16 matches played [6 years older to Borg]
- Solomon 15 matches played [4 years older to Borg]
- Mcenroe 14 matches played [3 years young to Borg]
- Ramirez 14 matches played [3 years older to Borg]
- Dibbs 14 matches played [5 years older to Borg]
- Gottfried 12 matches played [4 years older to Borg]
- Higueras 12 matches played [3 years older to Borg]
- Okker 11 matches played [12 years older to Borg]
- Barazutti 10 matches played [3 years older to Borg]

- Lendl 8 matches played [4 years younger to Borg]
- Laver 8 matches played [18 years older to Borg]
- Mayer 8 matches played [1 month older to Borg]
- Kodes 8 matches played [10 years older to Borg]
- Parun 7 matches played [9 years older to Borg]
- Smith 7 matches played [10 years older to Borg]
- Riessen 7 matches played [15 years older to Borg]
- Stockton 7 matches played [5 years older to Borg]
- Pecci - 7 matches played [1 years older to Borg]
- Fillol - 7 matches played [10 years older to Borg]
- Zugarelli - 7 matches played [6 years older to Borg]

- Fibak - 6 matches played [4 years older to Borg]
- Taroczy - 6 matches played [2 years older to Borg]
- Cox - 6 matches played [13 years older to Borg]
- Amritraz - 6 matches played [3 years older to Borg]
- Moore - 6 matches played [10 years older to Borg]
- Pattinson - 6 matches played [7 years older to Borg]
- Lloyd - 6 matches played [2 years older to Borg]
- Newcombe - 5 matches played [12 years older to Borg]

- Noah - 5 matches played [4 years younger to Borg]

See how oldies are going down in the top 100 in the 1970s, so this benefitted Borg who was youngest of them all and for a while he was the best in the world.

When it comes to Tier 1 , Fed is all alone there.

Any one else can come into tier 1 when they have

5 + YEC,
300 + weeks at No 1 ,
16+ majors ,
career slam,
20 + masters,
multiple wins at at least 3 majors.

Djokovic will have to wipe Fed's feet to get these credentials ...
it's hard to see it happening... even hypothetically...

He's a good age. Still has quite a few years before his movement will slow down and flexibility reduces.

At 30+ years old he won't be winning anything, but that's nearly 5 years from now.
Well.

The bump up's are slight insecurities :sneaky:
Craving for attention and seek approval.

There's no need to bump up old thread, because Nole is an ATG. Worthy in Tier 1 great along other great legends
