Could fires in Australia affect the AO 2020

Saw a similar picture of Australia and all the fires from space on FB before.

It's just so horrific and sad. Praying for rain right now. The other day it said on the news 449 homes were lost but I can imagine there's so many more lost now. :(

People losing there lives and animals too, it's just all so sad. :(

Reading your (informative) post I couldn't help but think the same thing. . With this fire so great in scale it stands to reason that the brave firefighters would suffer casualties and in this case the fact that they were volunteer firefighters who lost their lives on behalf of others makes the "my favorite male tennis idol" emo fanboy whining all that more off-putting. . Good post and a poignant reminder(y); maybe the bickering fanboys will keep the thread title in mind while keeping things in context as well. . Then again...

Thank you @Rafa.the.Magnificent yes rain would be the solution, unfortunately our summers are very dry and it’s only at the beginning, so all we can do is pray for some rain at this moment. There is over 300 fires burning rn. Too many. :(

They should just move to other location. Brisbane / Gold Coast air quality is Excellent!

Melbourne's position is technically not great. Moderate air quality is like Mexico City.

They should really move AO to Brisbane or Gold Coast. Federer can stay at my place.

No reason to play the AO in Melbourne, can play it anywhere :)

The AO director should inform the public today what number of Air Quality Index (AQI) is acceptable for the AO to go ahead.
If the air reading is too poor by the end of this week, then switch to another state :)
Otherwise they can say whatever they want and get away with forcing the players to play in unhealthy conditions.....

Air could be forming clouds of ash and AO still wouldn't delay or reschedule. I realized just how little they cared about player safety when they let them play on the insane 45 degree day a few years back. The rubber on my shoes was melting onto the concrete when I watched Goffin lose to chardy (iirc) it was ludicrous I cannot believe they were made to play.

No but I've heard they have 9 indoor courts (that are used for practice).
But even that is not enough, plus no room for spectators.
Just move to Sydney or Brisbane :)

The logistics involved in moving a Slam to another city must be incredible. They'd be better off postponing it or allowing the tournament to roll into a 3rd week and only play on days where air quality is acceptable. They certainly need to set a numerical level for what is and isn't acceptable to play in - does anyone know if they've done this yet?
I personally have mild asthma, and this level of pollution would definitely make me sick. I was in Seoul in summer 2016 and I got pollution sickness just from being out and about in Gangnam - I 100% could not have played a tennis match or even warm up in those conditions. I am a little concerned for some of the players if this does cause them any longer-term respiratory conditions.

Surely Sydney is just as bad in terms of air quality?
I'm supposed to be in Australia for the first half of February - I guess Perth will be fine, a bit concerned about Melbourne & Sydney. Extremely concerned about the number of animals that are getting wiped out.

From late December through to early Jan in Canberra, we wouldve had two weeks straight where the air quality was hazardous. At one point the aqi was almost 25 times the hazardous level. Im hoping it doesnt hit Melbourne that hard, but its not inconceivable. Canberras problems were excacerbated due to being surrounded by mountain ranges.

I think Sydney has improved a fair bit, but its still smoky from time to time. But its unpredictable, theres still bushfires burning near both cities. They could move to Sydney and Melbourne ends up better next week.
