Could Venus Williams break the Wimbledon record?

Now a 5-time Wimbledon champion, do you think Venus Williams is capable of breaking Martina Navratilova's record of 9? Now I think it's very unlikely, given her less than 100% commitment to tennis over the past few years and taking into account her occasional inconsistency resulting in early losses in 2004 and 2006 and almost being defeated in the first round in 2007. So maybe this isn't asking 'will she' but 'could she'? Say if Venus Williams from now on is 100% dedicated to tennis and has maximum motivation, and keeps playing tennis for another decade without injury like Martina did (I know she is very unlikely to stick around that long though), does she have any chance of getting there?

No. 7 at maximum. If even Navratilova the queen of longevity won only 1 slam past 30, Venus (and Serena) wont be winning any slams past 30. She will be 30 at Wimbledon two years from now, so 7 max if she were to win the next two. It doesnt matter if you keep playing tennis past 30, you will slow down and become less good past 30, that is a given. If even Navratilova, Court, Evert, and Graf all did then everyone will. The womens field cant remain as completely pathetic as it is now forever which is the only way the Williams can hope to win slams past 30.

Well said...I see Venus ending with 6 Wimbys, but anything beyond that...no way.

I think Venus will tie with Billie Jean and Lenglen at 6 Wimbledons but I can't see her winning more than that.

i hope she does. and now Venus and Serena even at this age can still win cus the girls now a quite weak and dont really think about it they just bash the balls. Only some girls are competition against them now but there is some great new players coming up. I think venus can get about 6-8 if really lucky and without injury and her regualr inconsistency 9. But i'd rather see her win 1 french and 1 aussie more to get a career golden slam. Then she can win 1-2 more wimbledons and done.

I know you a huge Venus fan, but Venus will at this point never achieve the Career slam. I think her body is well past the point where she can grind out the french open, especially given the great group of clay court players on the tour now in the Serbs, Dementieva, Safina among others. The Aussie...well if she is gonna win it I really think it needs to be this year, but I just don't see it for her. As for her winning a possible 9 Wimbledons...she would be 32 if she were to win every Wimbledon until acconplishing that. While Venus is an amazing grass court player, again I just don't see her body allowing her to do that. The most I see Venus getting is 7 Wimbledons, and thats if she gets a really lucky draw like she did last year at one of them. I like Venus, but I really just don't think she can pull that many more Wimbledons off.

Yeah there isnt a prayer of Venus winning the French Open at this point. She is not a good clay court player anymore. A better question is whether she will ever get past the first week of the French again. Australia? I hugely doubt it, I agree this year would be her last chance there. Wimbledon and the U.S Open are her chances to win more slams. She has gotten a bit unlucky at the U.S Open of late, always losing to the eventual champ and a couple of the matches she might have been able to win. However her chances at those two slams are only the next couple years. She is already 28 years old, she is not young.

Steffi won her last grand slam at 29. She won that one atleast partialy since Hingis choked bigtime, otherwise her last slam title would have been at 27. Mary Pierce won her last slam title at only 25. She reached her last 2 slam finals at 30 but was walloped brutally in both, and had easy draws to reach both.

but right now wta has all these boring bad players so i think with a good draw she has a slight chance of getting to the final.

Regarding the French Open, I definitely agree that she has no chance of ever winning that now. To be honest I think she'll do well just to make the QF again. Australian Open yes, this year might be the last chance. Grafules I think I agree that 7 Wimbledons is probably the most realistic outlook for Venus, and mainly depends on how much she wants it.

However, I think a 30-year old Venus would be a serious contender than Pierce was--for no other reason than the fact Venus' talents are on a far different level than most (in other words, not on the standard level of many of the women on tour), so it would serve as the kind of advantage (to offset the effects of age to some degree) Pierce simply did not have on her side.

Perhaps but like I said Navratilova the all time queen of longevity won only 1 slam past 30, and Graf won her last slam before she turned 30. Those are far better examples than Pierce.

As I said regarding Pierce she wasnt the 2nd best player of either of those slams either. She got super lucky with her draw both times as there are more than 1 player who would have definitely beaten her a both of those slams. At the French Open that year she would have lost to all of Henin, Clijsters, Kuznetsova, Sharapova, Petrova, but she only had to play Henin in the final where she was slaughtered. At the U.S Open that year she would have lost to all of Clijsters, Sharapova, Venus, Davenport, Serena, but avoided playing any of them until Clijsters in the final where she was whooped and nowhere close to winning a set.

Also as I said the WTA cant stay as awful as it has been for the last 5 years (the worst it has ever been) forever.
