Countries whose greatest athlete is a tennis player

An Israeli playing against Jaziri in Tunisia would bring the howling. Gal Gadot would get booed if she played against him topless.

Spain.

In spite of having a great number of huge athletes, such as Miguel Indurain, Fernando Alonso, Pau Gasol, Javier Gómez Noya, Xavi Hernández, Andrés Iniesta, Severiano Ballesteros, Marc Márquez, Ángel Nieto, Carolina Marín, Mireia Belmonte...the greatest is Rafa Nadal.

Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic with their respective countries. Nadal surprises me a lot considering Spain have always had world class footballers and basketball players yet their greatest athlete of all time is a tennis player. Federer is self explanatory, and so is Djokovic.

Was going to say Kevin Anderson but then remembered Ernie Els and Oscar Pistorius. Shame about the latter, was a national hero. Too bad he murdered his beloved.

I wasn't sure about Nadal considering Spain's history in football and as an American my soccer knowledge is very limited

No, Croatians produce some of the world’s best footballers and they will always be more popular in that country.

Sharapova is an American who can speak Russian.
ok fair enough re Croatia. I'm just remembering the intense national celebration when he won Wimbledon, not many countries would do that.

Sharapova - lol there's truth to that. But she still plays for them and I don't think she's a US citizen.

Can you name the hockey player or figure skater? I'm sure they have plenty but idk if any have her star power.
Evgeni Malkin and Alex Ovechkin come to mind. They're both hockey legends and although neither of them have the same "star power" as Maria, they're both still very well known and respected by the everyone in the hockey world. Hell Ovie just won the ESPY's male athlete of the year award which is VERY impressive considering how much American bias that show has

Federer, Nadal and Djokovic are all easily the greatest athlete that Switzerland, Spain and Serbia, respectively, have ever produced. Spain's produced many great athletes but I doubt any of them rank as high in their sport as Rafa does in tennis.

Bjorn Borg is probably the greatest athlete that Sweden ever produced, and the same can be said for Steffi Graf, although I'm sure a lot of German will give that to Beckenbauer.

I can understand why they went crazy for Ivanisevic. First Croatian to win a major and it wasn't that long after they gained independence. But the likes of Boban (damn he was a classy player), Prosinecki and Modric nowadays are always going to be more popular as football is a way more popular sport than tennis.

Only Beckenbauer ?? Don't forget Muller, Rummenigge, Matthaus etc.

Rod Laver for Australia. Rod Laver is a legend.

As for Russian athletes that others mentioned earlier, the best athlete from that country is Aleksandr Karelin. Karelin has a strong case for being the greatest alhlete of all time. The guy won 3 consecutive Olympic gold medals and was undefeated for 13 consecutive years. He had another stint of being unddfeated for 5 years, which means he lost once in an 18 year span. He also went 6 straight years without along a single point! He had a record of 880-2. When he lost to an American and had to settle for a silver medal, he left his belt on the ring and never wrestled again.

No love for Davor Suker?

It's hard to tell which is the greatest among Boban, Suker and Prosinecki. However, the moment Boban kicked that Serbian police in the face to protect a compatriot Croat, he has become a national hero.

Policemen was likely a Croat too, since the match was played in Zagreb... But it was still regarded as an act against Yugoslav regime, that Croatia wanted to part with.
Great player, though.

Yeah forgot about Davor, but there was something about the style and grace of Boban that I will never forget plus he played in that great AC Milan side.

I would actually consider both Anderson and Curren the same level. Both have a CH of #5 in singles, and both have made 2 GS Finals in singles. Curren does get an edge because of his doubles success though.

Yes, but how they made it to the finals is not the same. Lets pick it up at R16 at W.

W '85: Curren beat Edberg (#14 seed) in straights in R16, put a beat down on JMac (#1 seed) in QF, destroyed Connors (#3 seed) in semis. HIs loss to Becker (#20 seed, first Major final) in the finals was a big upset at the time. Curren beats (kills in the case of JMac and Connors) three of the all-time best and puts in a decent final showing against Becker. That final match could have gone the other way.

W '18: Kandy beats P. Lorenzi in R16, just got by Olde-rer*** in the QFs and then beat a servebot in five in the semis and then put in a similar performance to the 2017 USO final.

Curren > Anderson

***Apparently the more delicate FEDR fans have convinced the censor to censor the name when used without the hyphen.
