Countries whose greatest athlete is a tennis player

No, it doesn't. It doesn't work that way.

And it's a no question in Spain anyway, as I told you already. No one with a clue ranks any football player over Nadal in Spain. They are all just too far behind and most folks don't even consider Di Stefano, who is literally the only one you could make a case for, Spanish.

He is one.

How about Indurain and Contador (Obviously not football players)?

8-)

Only on TTW is a world #1 "overrated"

You can’t be overrated because you were number #1 ? The logic escapes me.

IMO the guy is grossly overrated by some on this board considering his modest record (mostly overrated I’m guessing by people that never actually saw him play in his day but caught some YouTube video of his absolute best matches).

His record at the Majors is weak and one of my all time favorite matches is having watched Tarango send him packing R2, USO 1996. :)

Keep enjoying Tarango, he's all yours.

I prefer watching Rios. I saw him play in real time and he's one of the most talented players I've ever seen. I honestly just feel sorry for you that you can't appreciate tennis like that. Took the ball early like Agassi, hands like Jmac and footwork like Fed.

His attitude sucked and that's what held him back, plus some injuries.

The kind of g forces they withstand, they have to be as fitter (if not more) than athletes from any other sport.

Edit: To answer your question, I don't think people doubt that F1 drivers are athletes

I have to concede, they all look athletic. Never spotted any overweight F1 drivers.

Nadal was named the greatest Spanish athlete some years ago. He is also the highest paid Spanish athlete since ten consecutive years.
Borg was also named the greatest Swedish athlete, Zlatan got second in that and there was a big news about how he thinks he is better than Borg so it's all debatable I guess.

Just thought of a couple more.

Marcos Baghdatis in Cyprus.
Gilles Müller in Luxembourg

Was going to say Dominic Thiem and Austria, but Austria has numerous winter sport athletes who are accomplished, so they’re probably considered better.
Also that's incredibly disrespectful to Thomas Muster

Luxembourg, as small a country as they are, has produced 3 different winners of the Tour de France, so Gilles Muller isn't anywhere near their greatest sportsman

Netherlands - Robin Haase
Eh? o_O

Spain - Alfredo Di Stefano? Xavi Hernandez?
Yeah I was considering Xavi and Iniesta as they were the catalyst's for Spain's football dominance, mostly between 2008-2012, but you'll mostly only see Xavi and Iniesta ranked high on the list of "greatest midfielders of all time" and usually not too high on the "greatest overall football players" list.

I think Midfielders are undermined generally whenever 'The Best Ever' lists are prepared.

Xavi, I consider him a notch above Iniesta. He was basically the system which enabled spain to conquer The World in 2010 and Europe in 08 and 12.
His FC Barcelona career is unparalleled.

Rafa is good on clay whereas Xavi excels on Grass. So, it's tough.

Well Hard to say Jarkko Nieminen or Litmanen.. Haha just kidding, of course Litmanen is still the King In our country :p:eek:

Ps. Fuc*kin hockey players so overrated In our country, same as In Canada. Sports that maybe 6-7 countries Are for real In this world, and rest Are sh*tty countries In hockey. And only two top leagues as NHL AND KHL. Of course nhl still miles the Best league In world:rolleyes:

6-7 countries is many countries

We love our speed skating, and we're the only ones in the goddamn world

Xavi is an icon and his presence totally took both Spain and Barca to a whole new level of domination, but I think most would give the "Spain's greatest athlete" mantle to Nadal as Nadal almost always appears among the top 2/3 GOAT candidates, whereas no Spanish footballer is ever mentioned in the GOAT discussion with the likes of Pele, Messi, Maradona, C Ronaldo, Brazil Ronaldo, Cruyff, etc.

Ubitennis, Dec.05, 2017: ¤¤ Rafael Nadal Named Spain’s Greatest Sportsman Of The Last 50 Years."
Nadal received his award on Monday evening. It was presented by Felipe VI of Spain, the country’s King, at the City Hall in Madrid.¤¤

This isn't about sportsmanship, but which athlete represent his nation as the greatest athlete of all time. For Spain, there are many candidates.

José Manuel Abascal
Abel Antón Rodrigo
Fermín Cacho Ruiz
Reyes Estévez López
Francisco Javier Gómez Noya

Ice hockey is still more popular than American football :p

Canada, Russia, Sweden, Finland, Czech Republic, and USA all play hockey at a high level. Then theres countries like Germany, Switzerland, and Slovakia who are all solid countries who can pull off shockers every once in a while. Whereas NFL is literally only played in America lol

It's Matti Nykänen.

The only viable answer from the more popular countries would Bjorn Borg and Sweden, and, obviously, Federer and Switzerland.

To those who say Nadal and Spain, they have no idea what football is in Spain.

While it's true that football in Spain is more popular than tennis, I'm not sure of a single Spanish footballer that has been equally as successful as Nadal, if not more so. Can you?

To add to the thread:

Belarus - Azarenka
Georgia - Basilashvilli

:D

Foreigner & Fed devotee, Spaniards have voted Rafa as the greatest Spanish athlete of all time.

Can you name the hockey player or figure skater? I'm sure they have plenty but idk if any have her star power.

Ovechkin, Tretiak, the KLM line of Kharlomov, Larionov and Makharov, Pavel Bure, Sergei Federov. That's off the top of my head. Not a figure skating fan though but hockey is big in Canada, Scandinavia and Russia.

Evgeni malkin of the Pittsburgh penguins is an amazing player too. It just sucks that he seems to always be overshadowed by Crosby which is sad cuz malkin's just as important to their team as Crosby is IMO

Finns also have F1 champs like Hakkinen and Raikkonen, plus legendary long distance runners like Nurmi and Viren.

Nieminen stands low, low down on their list of fame.

Usain Bolt - Jamaica
Ayrton Senna, Pele - Brazil
Se-Ri Pak, Yuna Kim - Korea
Guo JingJing - China
Rocky - Philadelphia (I know, know a real person or country, but oddly biggest sports figure out of Philly)
Wayne Gretzky - Canada
Alexander Ovechkin - Russia
Manny Pacquiao - Philippines

Malken actually has a higher salary than Crosby, so don't be too sad :)

Man dont tell me things I already know, cause I was totally subjective here because I dont like F1 anymore and especially not Räikkönen :P Although thouse runners are very respected in Finland, I think still Litmanen is by far our best athlete all times.
