Crisp feeling, low-powered hybrid setup?

JGads

G.O.A.T.
Trying to find a hybrid setup to CRISP up the feel of a softer feeling, high-powered frame (Donnay Dark Red). Full bed of Volkl Cyclone, which I love in stiffer frames, was too soft/mushy. Full bed of Babolat Vs. Gut was too soft and was much too powerful (even strung at top of the tension range). Now thinking of trying a hybrid of a poly main/synthetic or natty gut cross.

Best guess at the moment is Babolat Revenge/Wilson NXT cross? I've never hit with Revenge, but reviews indicate a crisp feel that's very control-oriented/low power, which is what I'm looking for. Many people say that it doesn't play well as a full bed, though, so looking for something crisp to match it up with, or other hybrid suggestions.

Thanks much.

Crisp and low powered? Try Gosen Polylon in the mains, and Gosen OG Sheep Micro synthetic gut in the crosses.
Cheap, lower powered, and crisp.

Don't wish to drag your thread off topic, but I can't help but ask some questions (as I'm considering either the X-Red or Dark Red):

1. How is the racquet for stability?
2. What about plow?
3. Is the sweetspot close to a 95sq", generous or small?
4. Is the racquet demanding or forgiving?
5. Powerful or low powered frame?
7. Does it play like the PB10 Mid? Or less polaraized?

Any replies greatly appreciated.

that IS kind of low powered on my AG100 at 46/41. try it any ways, it's really cheap. im sticking with cyberflash16/ogsm17 for a while. great price for those reels!!

so does that make you 3.5 NTRP from your sig?

Thanks for the feedback, gentlemen. And glad NXT showed up in the suggestions, because I'd like to give it a shot again. Used to play with a full bed of it in my KBlades and always loved the crisper feel, and I haven't gotten that crispness from the Vs. Gut like I thought I would (it was my first Vs. Gut full bed attempt, and it just felt too soft for my personal taste; I like a crisp, crunchy kind of feel) ... Now, onto answering Torres' Qs [this would be regarding the Dark Red; thoughts on Red further below]:

1. Stability is great. No trouble at all getting back hard-hit balls, whether from the baseline or at net.
2. Plow is SUPERB when you pop the heaviest 10g weightcap in. That weightcap also gives it a whipability that just crushes serves to the right spots. Even though it swings so much easier through the air, the plow of this frame is like a K90, but unfortunately doesn't have the K90s sublime feel of the ball. (hence my string search attempt to make it perfect).
3. Sweetspot is like a 95, very generous. One of the more generous frames I've had and I was puzzled by some on the boards that said these Donnays have small sweetspots. And then reassured when the sweet spot info came up on the Learning Center and confirmed that it was indeed very large.
4. Depends on your game. I'm a borderline 4.5 and find it similar in style/shot capabilities to the K90 and Volkl PB10 Mid, but easier to wield in the third set. Thin beam really makes it cut through the air so easily.
5. Extremely powerful. That's why I'm looking for a low-powered, control-oriented setup to tame it a bit.
6. Obviously yes, as I already stated. Feel is similar, too, in that it's a pretty soft frame and a tad flexy, and I'm doing the same thing now I did when I tried the PB10 Mid before: get a crisp-as-can-be string feel to balance out the softness.

Now, as for the Red 94, I tried it briefly and I will say that for me the Dark Red just seem to outperform it on every level - shot depth/quality, serve pop and consistency, stability - EXCEPT for feel. The Red 94 was a bit stiffer and I liked that it didn't flex quite as much, but I was hitting so much better with the Dark Red that I concentrated my tweaking efforts on the DR.

So in the end, I ended up buying a Dark Red for a long-term tweak to see if I can make it my go-to, since it has the most upside of any frame I've demoed in the last year-plus. I'm just trying to get the feel of it JUST right. My best setup was a full bed of Tourna Big Hitter Silver at high tension - that crisped the thing up very nicely and performed well - but the crispness was also just a tad wire-like in feel, so I'm looking into a hybrid setup (may try that Adrenaline/NXT combo). If that doesn't give me the desired feel, I'm going to go back to the Big Hitter Silver or another crisp feeling poly and play around with tension.

Thanks JGads - one more question if I may - what's the 'feel' of the frame on contact? Does it feel like a solid single piece mold or does it wobble and flex when returning hard it shots? Does it jar or does have more of a plush, dampened type feel?

I'm not sure if I'm explaining myself correctly, but what I mean is some racquets feel completely solid (eg. Dunlop 200 Tour, which is solid like a log, though perhaps a bit too solid but that's a different issue...), whereas other racquets seem to wobble and flex a bit too much (and to an extent, I include the PB10 in the latter category). What end of the scale would you put the DR94 into?

Does it feel much like the KBlade 98? Or does it have more of traditional PS type feel to it?

Sorry for the extensive questions, but its an expensive racquet to get the buying purchase wrong as its not as if many of them are going to appear on the used market!

The racquet flexes but not quite as much as I remember the PB10 Mid flexing. Around the hoop, though, it feels very solid (it is foam filled), so there does seem to be a slight flex in the throat area but this is felt more on very big groundstrokes. When punching volleys back I don't feel the flex nearly as much/seems to stay very solid and stable, and the same goes for block-back service returns and such. It's when you load up and hammer a sitter that you'll feel the stick really flex.

And between the K98 and the PS, I'd definitely say it feels a little more 'old school' in feel like a PS than a K-Blade; the K-Blade 98 (my old frame 2 yrs ago) really stood stiffly, didn't bend at all. Sometimes I loved this, sometimes I didn't. I did enjoy the K98 overall, though, but it gave me fits at net, where the ball would always move the racquet and not the other way around. I lost many key points up there and finally dropped the racquet. The Donnay is fantastic at net. Touch shot or punch volley, it'll get the job done.

Other thing I adore about the DR is the head shape. It's very tear-drop (a lot like the Blades were), which I prefer, as tear-drop sticks have always felt a bit more natural to me, for whatever reason, seem to swing through the air a bit more heavily. The slight funkiness of the Volkl shape was always a tad weird to me. But don't get me wrong - the PB10 is a dynamite stick, it was CLOSE to being my stick of choice, but I ended up feeling that I wasn't quite good enough to wield it around full time. The Donnay DR is on the same level of what it's capable of doing to the ball, but it swings a little easier and feels a bit more natural to me than the Volkl ever did. And the DR's serves are just deadly. But they could be cousins in the feel department.

Hope that covers it. ... I actually hit some more with the DR tonight and the Vs Gut full bed actually felt a little better today than it did upon my first outing. Maybe there's a settling-in that took place? Felt better/crisper than it did the first outing, but the thing that bugged me is the strings moved around a lot. Tough getting back to constant string adjusting between points after getting used to full poly beds of Volkl Cyclone that never moved around. Too bad the Cyclone just feels too soft in this frame.

Crisp and low powered? Try Gosen Polylon in the mains, and Gosen OG Sheep Micro synthetic gut in the crosses.
Cheap, lower powered, and crisp.

So after doing some additional research on the suggestions here, I think this Gosen hybrid is the most intriguing for what I'm looking for. But I'm also still keen on possibly trying a Revenge 17/NXT (or NXT Tour) 16 hybrid as well, since the reviews on Revenge really seem to say that it's crisp and control-oriented.

Any thoughts as to how these two different hybrid setups would compare in terms of feel?
