Criteria for Player of the decade

Okay I am just going to say the decade starts in 2010. I know there are strong arguments that it starts in 2011, but I am just choosing 2010 as a start point because I believe most people think of decades finishing on a 9 year like 2000-2009. I don't want this thread to be about arguing that point.

So who is the player of the decade so far. And what are the criteria for determining it.

Well, it probably could go to a mixture of high level performance at the top events and time at number 1.

So since 2010 we have:

Slams:
Djokovic 8 slams, 7 runner-ups

Nadal 8 slams, 4 runner-ups

So Djokovic ahead in the Slam criteria this decade

WTF:

Djokovic 4 wins, 0 runner-ups

Nadal 0 wins, 2 runner-ups

So Djokovic ahead in the WTF criteria this decade

Masters 1000:

Djokovic 20 wins, 4 runner-ups
Nadal 12 wins, 8 runner-ups

Djokovic ahead in Masters 1000 this decade

Weeks at number 1:

Djokovic 155 weeks
Nadal 95 weeks

Djokovic ahead in weeks at number 1 this decade

YE number 1

Djokovic 2011, 2012, 2014
Nadal 2010, 2013

Djokovic ahead in YE number 1 this decade

Could it end up being that Nadal will end up being the number 2 this decade and the last decade, but this end up with a better career than the number 1 for this decade?

Why don't you wait until the end of 2020 by which time Roger Federer will have won a further 21 slams!?

There's no doubt it's now Djokovic given everything he's achieved in the last 12 months. It would be wonderful if he went on to win at least four more between now and the end of 2019 as that would equal the amount Federer won in the Noughties. :)

Nadal's wins are against Djokovic for the most part

Djokovic's wins are against Murray for the most part

Djokovic lost to Nadal at majors more than he won When they faced each other.

Does not seem a fair comparison ?

Going by this, in open era
1970 to 79 Borg(8slam ,2 tour finals.)
80 to 89 Lendl(7slam and 7 tour final)
90to99 Sampras (12slam 5tour finals)
2000 to 2009 Federer (15 slam , 4 tour finals)
10-19 probably Novak (11slam and 4 tour finals).

Since Rafa's 10 year slam reign (an ultimate tennis achievement) was between 2005-2014 he is doesn't really win a decade as his dominance started halway and finished halfway.

Btw, the decade should start in 2011.....

Btw, the decade should start in 2011.....
The numbers as they correspond to history are arbitrary. Makes more sense to group them by numerical taxonomy. All the ones starting 201x as a single decade-unit. All the 2xxx's as the millennium. Happily, this is the way everyone in the world does it, except for those who mistake Christian dogma for scientific fact.

LOL @ "there was no year zero." The year one in the Julian calendar was in 46 BC. The arbitrarily designated year one in the Gregorian calendar was chosen in the 16th century.
