Cross/hybrid stringing 101 ?

#1
I want to explore alternatives to full bed Poly.
Play it safer for arm than full poly.
Don't want full extreme arm friendly noodle,
but just something more in the middle.

I never break Poly.
Always change it at 10-15 hours.

What are common options?

What goes in mains?
What for cross ?

Gut or synth mains and poly cross?

What tension if playing full poly at 50?

Please specify strings I can buy from TTW.
(They don't sell Lux Gut)

I'm currently using Solinco Barbwire 17g in my mains and 17g natural gut from NG wholesale in the crosses. I string it a 52 lbs and find I get good balance of string life/feel out of this combo.

That set-up sounds like it would last about 2 hours. Out of curiosity, how long is it lasting you?

I may be wrong, but my understanding of the "rule of thumb" is that behavior of a hybrid sting bed comes 70% from mains and 30% from crosses. If you use gut on the mains, it will be gut-like with a little added poly-like behavior. If you use poly on the mains, it will be poly-like with a little shift in the gut direction.

Don't get the NG wholesale stuff, it's garbage
Have you tried the NG wholesale string? If so which version was it, I was using some of there V2 gut and it was pretty lumpy but I found it played ok(what tension do you string at?). I've got some of their V4 gut and now they have their V5 gut out that is meant to play similar to the more expensive gut strings. I actually have a half set of Klip NG 17G in one of my racquets and it plays nice too. ;)

I find the my poly/gut hybrids to be very durable for the tennis I play(mainly mens doubles), due to family commitments I'd be lucky to play 3 sets a week on average. I'd love to play more but its hard to find the time. :(

This is my Steam 105 that has Solinco BarbWire 17 in the mains and Klip Legend 17 in the crosses. Strung about 13 months ago and has probably played 30+ sets of doubles and a couple of sets of singles as well.
This still hits ok but the gut is fraying a bit and I'll string it again for the coming season of night competition.

This is my other Steam 105 that has Solinco BarbWire 17 in the mains and NG Wholesale 17 in the crosses. Strung about 4 months ago and has probably played 15 sets of doubles.
I'll keep these strings a bit longer as they holding up quite well and still feel ok.
