Fed looks good on paper and has been on court for basically three hours less than the remaining semifinalists

some fun with work levels.
  • surprisingly (to me) gasquet expends the least amount of effort per point. this is despite the fact that he approaches the net considerably less often than federer who is the outlier with one approach each 5.3 points.
  • no surprise that federer plays the most points per hour, the other guys all clustered.
  • the net result of this is that gasquet ends up expending the least amount of effort per hour, and federer the most! (though of course he has compensated for that by playing by far the fewest number of hours - so far)

_____________dist/pnt____pnts/net apprch______pnts/hr______dist/hr
djoko_________9.8m_________8.0___________________94__________0.9km
gasquet_______8.3m_________7.3___________________96_________0.8km
murray_______10.4m_________9.3___________________89_________0.9km
federer_______9.5m__________5.3__________________105_________1.0km

(edit: just re-read OP - gasquet's distance is lower because the wimbledon site is missing his distance run from one match! so that explains a lot)

and some fun with levels of effective aggression.

  • fed has the highest number of (winners - UE). but he has also played by far the fewest number of points.
  • if you divide (W-UE) by total points, you get a good proxy for how effective a player's aggression has been. you can see that federer is creating a "net" winner on 15% of points played - comfortably more than the others. (here "net" winner means "net of unforced errors", and not "at the net")
  • these stats are obviously hugely dependent on who the opposition was. djokovic has had the hardest time of it - with two top 20s and 4 top 50s. he's also played two huge servers compared to 1 for fed and murray. but at least fed and murray have played very similiar opposition. so it's still insightful (and fun) to compare numbers at least for them.

___________winners - UE_______(W - UE) / total pnts_____avg opp rnk
djoko______________105_______________10%________________35
gasquet____________105_______________10%________________78
murray_____________96_______________10%_________________49
federer____________124_______________15%_________________46

What is weird is that it is the lowest ranked of the four that get the lowest average rank of opponent...
I wonder what those average ranks come to if we include the SF...

Quick compute : fed goes down to 39, murray to 41, gasquet to 65, djok up to 36
It is getting closer ...
