Current college players in 2019 Challengers

In Cleveland, Roy Smith, JJ Wolf, and Borna Gojo all won their 1st rounds. Wolf was most impressive, defeating Ryan Shane 1,2 in less than an hour. Hard to believe Shane took 9 games off Opelka in November but could win only 3 vs Wolf. Gojo beat Michael Redlicki in 3 sets while Roy Smith beat his opponent in straights but one set was tiebreak. Maybe Roy plays better with ads as he lost his singles in the ITA kickoff. Maxime Cressy who won in Qualifying is the 4th current college player, and his 1st rd match is tomorrow. Long day for these guys in Cleveland with matches only played on 2 courts. Wolf didnt get on court until after 9pm-fortunate to finish match in an hour.

Interesting matches tomorrow are Torp (who won 1st rd today) playing Ryan Harrison's little brother Christian, former collegian Dominik Koepfer (4th seed) playing Gojo, and Roy Smith playing Donald Young. The latter is the last singles match Tuesday. Wolf's next match will be against #1 seed Jason Jung ATP 115, Michigan grad but I assume that will be Wed as it is not on Tues OOP.

Dallas follows Cleveland with Wolf on acceptance list and Gojo and Roy Smith high on alternate list. Since 10 MD guys withdrew after acceptance in Cleveland (list comes out about 3 weeks ahead), it is likely Gojo and Smith will get in Dallas unless they have to withdraw for college play or class attendance. Since Gojo has yet to play for Wake, I wonder what his situation is. Both Wolf and Smith played for their teams this weekend before making the quick turnaround to Cleveland-short trips for both-only 2 hours from Columbus and not too far from Ann Arbor either.

Wolf - Jung should be interesting

Wolf starts adding wins in those type matches and we could have our next potential full time ex-college pro

Did you know Jason Jung started a thread on TT in 2015 that ran about a year? https://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/ind...ssional-tennis-player-ask-me-anything.534402/
Usually I root for the current collegians, but I will be neutral on this one since both seemed to be good guys and great players. Son got to be a hitting partner for Jung at an ATP event and said he was really nice and easygoing.

On another note, several of the US pro players in Cleveland went to a Cavs game and got to throw out Tshirts. The Cavs twitter was impressed with their cannon arms (included video). Couple of them reached the 2nd tier. LOL

Really hard not to root for Jason Jung. :)

Roy Smith beat Donald Young in a 3 setter that ended at midnight. Bit of a nightmare for DY to leave Cleveland without a win after reaching SF in Newport (DY had 1st rd bye in Cleveland). DY easily handled Kypson as his first match at Newport winning 3,2, but Roy is no Kypson and rebounded from a 2nd set bagel to win the match. Torp easily beat Christian Harrison only allowing 3 games, while Gojo slipped past Koepfer in 3. Former Deacon Rubin won in straights. Preceding the Wolf/Jung match tomorrow will be a battle between former Tarheel Schnur and Stefan Kozvlov. Will Stefan show he's ready to rejoin Next Gen or will he go down vs the Newport finalist? Just hope noone's car stalls en route to the courts in Cleveland's -35 windchill. Quite a climate change from Newport....

Kozlov is in a major slump. He played awful against Cressy in Newport. Don’t see him beating Schnur. Surprised DY lost to Smith, but the competition is fierce and the results are unpredictable at this level.

Roy Smith was really impressive last night. He has some big shots. Big fastball lefty serve and a huge forehand. College the perfect place for him to be. If he can get more consistent, develop a more aggressive style with that consistency, he could be something on the tour in two or three years.

And Gojo gets crushed by Cressy the chip and charger. Challengers and futures tennis - where anyone can win or lose to anyone on any given day.
Gojo isn't a top level pro player. unique style like charging the net all the time is good style of play

Cressy wins the title in Cleveland! Played very well the entire week, and played a heck of a final against Torpegaard. Glad to see strong players from last year's college season performing well in the pros.

He went from Cleveland to Dallas in less than 24 hours and got a win over Emilio Gomez today in Dallas qualifying.
I saw! If I'm being frank, I thought there was a strong chance that he would be unable to continue on from last week and struggle in this match, and maybe even lose. Glad to see him doing well! while his grunt is....less than pleasurable, watching the serve and volley game is always fun to me.

I watched him at the fountain valley futures last year and didn’t think his game would win him a challengers title! I do agree that his game is fun to watch compared to most of the other players grinding from the baseline.

Yeah! much different from last year. It feels like to me with the new ITF tour and how the challengers are doing 64 player draws, I've seen some players win challenger titles that I didn't expect to win.
