Dan Evans appreciation thread

How good is it to watch genuine all-round tennis?

That match v Demon was the greatest middleweight match I think I've ever seen. Makes you wonder how good tennis would be if no blokes over 6'4'' were playing/slice and approaching was rewarded if conditions were a little lower/quicker.

Evans is playing the purest tennis out there by a long shot IMO.

Gutsy run beating Fognini Herbert and Rublev, all tight matches; keeping cool in tie breaks.
I like watching him, proof you can go a long way with a predominantly sliced backhand,; not that I didn’t know that as a Graf fan.

He backs up his slice bh with a solid serve, great flat fh - and has a pretty decent topspin bh which clearly separates him from Lopez and Johnson f.inst.

He should tone down his fist pump in the opponent’s face, he doesn’t have the game for that imo and he‘s been on lady luck’s side quite a few matches now. That will turn, and then he’ll just look like a buffoon ...

I love his slice backhand, it's a very tricky slice to deal with. He has a game which is pleasing on the eye, he's provisionally ranked at 27th so after everything he's finally living up to potential.

Love watching this guy play, nice contrast to all the baseline bots. Hope to catch him on one of the smaller courts at IW. Couple years ago I watched M. Zverev play on a small outer court just to see what pure s&v looks like in person.

Love how he plays. Shows you dont have to because giant to have a big serve and get to net nowadays. Uses the slice bh well and has lots of variety. Would love to see this guy have a good run at a slam.

It's true. He seems very insecure. Even in this last match, he was broken to 0 when serving for the match and was DF like Zverev throughout the match.
His matches are always entertaining, that's one thing I'm sure. He can be on the brink of losing, pull out some monumental effort just to fold serving 4-5 in the third

That match against Sousa was something. When he went down 1-2 in sets he said something like this to his box -"it's still good, we can do this. we're still winning this. Is that right? tell me we're winning this." Quite an insight into his psyche. But yeah, definitely great to watch when he's on and has familiarity vibe, looking like some random guy in the pub.

I rate his tennis. Always makes for an entertaining match when he gets aggressive against the young baseline barnacles

All he does is hit slices like a pusher, no?

But for real I'm finding myself watching more of his matches. He's got a deceptively aesthetically-pleasing one hander as well--by that I mean it looks ugly from the normal viewing angle, but in the slow-mo replay it looks nice.

I do wish he'd mix things up a bit more on that backhand wing. I know lots of players find dealing with slices difficult but there's a point where it stops being difficult and starts becoming a drilling session.
