Daniil Medvedev escaping a default despite hitting a fan in the face

The most likely reason is because the woman didn't fall out on the ground in an Oscar nominated performance writhing in pain and pretending she is dying (obviously because she was looking for a payout from the USTA which I'm sure she got). Still, it shows they are not consistent with enforcing the rule and if you're only going to enforce for certain situations or against certain players but not others, then why is the rule there in the 1st place?
Yeah I mean Rafa blasted a ball probably at 70-80 mph that hit a little kid in the face and she took it much better than the lady at the US open.

I actually don’t believe Novak should’ve been dq’d. But the reaction played a part of the line judge being hit in the throat and she went down.

It also was not the same as Novak picked the ball up and hit it out of frustration. Had med done that and hit the fan in the throat or face - then I’d support a DQ.

Titsipas against NK at wimbledon last year deserved a DQ for what he did.
Lmao man. You guys are quite something. Sure what Stef did was awful and it can be argued that he should have been heavily penalized. But but.. He did not hit anybody. Unlike Medvedev, who smacked a spectator in the face. But yeah Stef should have been DQd and Med should be let off scot free. That makes so much sense. Wow.

A judgement should be made based on both the intent and result, or, as pointed out by @tudwell, in the absence of intent, on the level of recklessness and the result.

While I don't think Djokovic was reckless enough to warrant that kind of punishment (the only reckless thing about his actions was he didn't look), I disagree with the braindead takes who think judgement calls should be eliminated altogether just because we have to draw a line.

"Oh how dare the existence of judgement calls offend my idol Novak let's get rid of them LOL!!!!!"

Judgement calls are made and lines are drawn on a daily basis by interpreters of the law and that's what keeps society balanced. What you want us to either not punish anyone or give the maximum punishment for an offence just because we have to go through the hassle of drawing a line and factoring in intent, neglect and results equally? Society's not gonna be happy either way. Of COURSE crimes have degrees and OF COURSE judgement is needed - that's what keeps us running. Once in a blue moon a wrong judgement and corresponding degree of punishment is made - hey we evaluate on the validity of the judgement, but not say the rules are stupid altogether.

Medvedev was just practicing targeted volleys for the indoor season. It's no big deal. What a bunch of crybabies we have here.

This incident only confirms that European ladies are tougher than American ladies.

You again need to look at the intent vs the result. Rafa smacked a ball girl in the face with a full blast forehand return that went 15 ft wide. She didn’t cry. Or react crazy. It also was an accident.

Medvedev didn’t pick up a ball and smash it with intent at the spectator. The ball bounced off the wall he turned around and swatted at it. To me that’s a pure accident. He didn’t intend to smash a ball at the crowd. It looks bad but there was no intent or frustration behind it.

Novak’s looked bad yes bc he did pick the ball up and hit it out of frustration and hit the line woman in the throat. He didn’t have to do that. He didn’t intend to do that but he clearly wasn’t thinking.

Don’t forget the little girl who took a Rafa return to the face. She was like 12? And she didn’t react the way the woman at the us open did back in 2020

Let’s also remember. Medvedev was up 6-4 5-1 when this happened. If y’all think it was in anger and not reacting to the ball coming back at him rapidly - watch the exact full point and not the Twitter slow mo.

Disgraceful as usual from this prat, and his reaction is to look at the ump and do a "how dumb is this woman" gesture. Hope Stef destroys him today

Lol someone didn’t watch the match.
You’re saying it was poor behavior after a lost point up 6-4 5-1? Lol
Watch the point again. Take the hate blinders off :)

Also what stef did at Wimbledon is 10x worse to whatever med or Novak did. Sure he missed the spectator. But he in anger took a ball and smashed it directly into the crowd after losing a game to NK and missed their face. That’s ball abuse.
