Coming off of his ignominious defeat to world #165 Thiago Seyboth Wild in the French Open first round, Daniil has now been dumped out of the ‘s-Hertogenbosch tournament by Mannarino.

That’s now two consecutive tournaments he’s been taken out without winning a match.

Discuss.

Good, bad & ugly

Do anybody know what is djok tourny plan pre WB

Mannarino leads this head to head 4-2 and 3-1 on grass now (beat Medvedev at 2018 Wimbledon) so it's not that big of an upset and not that big of a shock. It's a terrible matchup for him. Everybody is looking for something to complain about in regards to the strength of the field now that a certain someone has destroyed the records. Lol.

To be clear, I made this thread solely because I don’t like Medvedev, think he’s overrated, and he pisses me off, not because of any other ulterior motive.

Pretending that is tragedy for Medvedev who owes his No.1 to HC anyway, that he lost his first match on grass to former champ , the guy he beat in last year SF who has respectable 82/55 (and a lot more experience is just to sh**t at competition.
Yawn!

People have been complaining about the field since like 2018/2019 at least.

The complaints have just gotten louder recently.
Meh, they've been loud since at least 2021 IMO. The complaints are richly deserved though, even for neutral observers I should think, though of course some of it is definitely sour grapes at this point.

Mannarino is no joke on grass and is quite comfortable on the surface, probably his best. Has won the title on grass already and his best slam results have come at Wimbledon, which is no surprise since his playing style, flat hitting off both wings, and and smooth movement make him efficient on the surface.
Could've been much worse for Medvedev, i.e. had he lost to a clay courter.

There's no denying on the weakness of the grass field though.

I mean, this loss isn't even as bad las last year's loss when he lost to someone I'd never heard of in the final itself.

Tbh, Van Rijthoven was probably the 3rd or 4th best player on grass last season. He even gave Djokovic a tougher match than basically anyone had since 2019.

It's beyond me how can anyone think this is not a weak field. I wonder if you care about tennis at all.

The thing is, don't say the field is strengthening because of upcoming ATG Alcaraz which is what I've been hearing this year and while Alcaraz and Medvedev were winning everything, then it's back to weak once Djokovic takes another Slam.

More like 2014, and for a good reason. That was the beginning of the weak era, as two big 3 players were already past their primes. But nobody could predict how bad it will become later.

Make that since 2015 (as in after it).
2016 was a still strong field. 2017 was pretty weak. 2018 > 2017. 2019 < 2018. Then 2020, all the great players were basically retired or way out form except Djokovic and a couple of others like Berrettini and Kyrgios.

Anyone who said it should not be taken seriously. Alcaraz vultured a few titles beating the likes of Struff. And once he finally got a real challenge, he couldn't last for more than 2 sets. I think it's clear Alcaraz would hardly be relevant if he even had Thiem's competition on clay. Not even talking about prime Nadal.

I don't consider post-prime Berdych and Raonic a strong field.

7-10 slams in any other era.

Best modern groundstrokes ever

Yes field was weaker in 2017 with Nadal,Federer,Murray,Stan but now it is stronger because of the GLOAT Djokovic dominating by straight setting legends like Tsitsipas,Rudd,Medvedev,Norrie,Fuscovis,Rublev

It was , tennis is evolving, some can't keep up...

Stan and Murray got injured and were never the same again after RG 2017. Probably not the best argument.
