Daniil Medvedev says the kid in him "stopped dreaming" after what he experienced today with the crowd.

So, in a nutshell young Danil naively believed intelligence only is what makes Djokovic win against superior force.

He needs his friendship with Djokovic to grow deeper. That is the only way to learn and understand other components. And then maybe implement.

Here is one trivial part. Djokovic does not call crowd idiots. Crowd even believes he needs and wants to be loved by them. It is more subtle than what meets the eye. Danil missed many nuances. But he can learn if he invests himself properly.

The whole world wasn't against him. Almost all Fed fans and 99.9999% of Djokovic fans hoped like hell he would win. And Med has many fans who don't give a damn about the big three.

Again, he has no one but himself to blame for losing a two sets lead to a guy who will be 36 in a couple months. Just like Denis, they sit around in their post-match pressers whining instead of sitting there as the winner of the match.
The 90 % of the crowd applaud every missed first serve by Daniil. Nadal couldn't stand just a couple of cheers when he made a couple unforced errors against Serbia in ATP Cup last year. Rafa was a worthy winner but the crowd was hostile from the first ball.

Definitely, but the times that Djokovic has antagonized a crowd have been few and far inbetween, and in the highest stress situations he has actually kept his composure extremely calm and celebrated very calmly.

True but crowd behaviour can certainly get to him. Their over-enthusiastic support for his opponent at Madrid some years ago (he lost to Dimitrov) put him off from playing that event for a few years.

Novak certainly has had his 'moments' with the crowd including the infamous occasion when he shouted to them that they should all suck a very private part of his anatomy. He said it in Serbian of course but there were more than a few observers quite willing to offer a translation!
I'll take your word for it. And the dramatic breaking of rackets. With respect to Med, At first I did not get the 'small cat' reference... But then I have actual cats - one of whom is named Rafa.

I’m far from somebody who defends Medvedev. He’s childish, I actually think Stefanos was on the mark with his comments on him. But the crowd today was inexcusable. I’m sorry, but the amount of times they called between first and second serve is just mind numbing. I cannot understand how you can defend their actions even implicitly, like anything is permittable just cause he’s an immature dick. The crowd was downright shameful and I’m disappointed that it’s soured what could have been a great final

Australians, with a few exceptions, are a pretty simple bunch. Their woeful conduct at a political level was echoed at a more base level with the crowd behaviour today.

People can hate Med all the want for his antics. But it's truly sad when the "dream of the kid" is stripped. I know this an adult world and it's a tough world but it doesn't mean I can't feel sorry for "the kid". I hope with some time and perspective he will get some of the magic back that made him love tennis. That's the Med we all love to watch.

Western crowds are influenced 100% by the media and they will hate whome ever media tells them to hate...this is not new Danil being Russian and Novak being a Serb this is a given as media is the extension of western forign policy. Learn to overcome hate and adversity Danil

If this presser is reflective of his true feelings, my guess is that Medy learned a few things with this loss. here is to hoping he tones dow the antics and keeps it insightfull!

Whatever the crowd's reactions to Djokovic and Medvedev, being Eastern Europen has got nothing to do with it. During the Cold War there was admittedly some prejudice towards the East but defectors like Navratilova were welcomed like I said. Lendl was admittedly not very popular but that was all to do with his dour personality, not where he came from. Genuine tennis fans like me respond to a player's personality. We couldn't care less where they were born.

Wimbledon will always belong to English/British people and Australian Open will always belong to Anglo Australians . Thats fine .

But if Non Western Top ranked players feel so demotived by the toxic Crowds at Wimbledon/Australian Open that they would prefer to play a 250 ATP event at their home instead of playing Wimbledon /Australian Open then it is clear that those slams belongs to the Western Champions , not so much to Non Western Champions .

Lets call spade a spade.

Honestly, this loss, and this press conference... gives me the biggest hope for him. He needs to play for himself. Every athlete does. I have always disliked Djokovic's constant need to be loved by the crowd, but the guy never really let that harm his game. He played through it. Played for his country. Played for his family. Played for his team. Played for himself. Up until now, I think Medvedev has let that need harm his game.

If he truly separates his desire for acceptance from the crowd from his desire to win and compete... he is going to improve so much that it will be scary.

If he wants to take some mental cues, he should take it from his own countryman, Marat Safin. Safin also learned this lesson early on.

I can only repeat that true tennis fans react to players based on their personalities or on their potential threat to their own favourites. They don't grab their bios and say, "Hey, he/she is from Eastern Europe, I'm not supporting him/her" and, if they do, they are not true tennis fans and should be ignored completely.

Medvedev's childish story tells how naïve and cossetted he is.
This is professional sport. Fans are its lifeblood. You bait them, call them low IQ, you might have some, er, problems with them when you could really do with their help.

Most great champions have experienced losses similar to what Med suffered today. It would be a surprise if he was not bitterly disappointed at the outcome. He'll remember this.

But it's what he's learned from it, and what he adjusts going forward that will determine if he too becomes a great champion. I think he will. We'll see.

Being successful Slav isn't very popular in tennis. Newer was, never will be. Hope this will teach Medvedev a lesson that in order to be liked by the fans and the media, he needs a name change and a nationality change. Pronto ;)

Ibrahimovic is one of the most popular football players on the planet (maybe even the most popular one after Messi and Ronaldo), I don't see why that can't be the case in tennis. In fact, Dimitrov was marketed well and would have been very popular if he fulfilled his expectations.

I have watched this video twice.

I don't think Big 3 have even 10% of charm or intelligence as Medvedev has. Medvedev is genuine .

This makes me sad , what he went through on court today ,it was terrible .

All Slams are in Western Countries . That is a huge disadvantage to Non-Western athletes . Feeling sad for Medvedev !

The kid stopped dreaming . :(

This was even worse than USO15 final. The crowd booed Med for missing a toss on his serve.... And they booed the electronic line call system because the ball was not in Rafa's favour... I have never seen anything like it, and hope I never see it again. Disgusting behaviour. And I agree with what Medvedev said to the umpire: "Please is not enough! These are idiots, you need to order them to be quiet between every point if that's what it takes".

Very emotional "speech" from Medvedev and I agree with you; a smart guy with tons of charm!

Fans were going to be rooting big time for Rafa against any other opponent out there except Federer. Med should have known going into the match he would have very little fan support and he should have just dealt with it like Djokovic does.

Its a shame this world goes on trying to convince we should not discrimate certain people but in the other hand it is still obviously that a political war justifies to discriminate players and athletes of a certain country. This hypocrisis makes me sick

we have big 3 and Med is considered as usurper who is challenging the establishment. It won't go well with the crowd and that is exactly what he is experiencing.

Also Med thinks too high of himself. IMO he is just a grinder with nothing unique about his game. His attitude towards the crowd also sucks. I'm not surprised he is hated this much. He will get his due when big 3 retire.

Athletes have to be able to mentally handle adversity including crowds and fans against them. If he can't handle that, he isn't strong enough. It goes without saying that the crowd is going to be cheering for any player going for history. If it was Federer or Novak going for #21, the crowd would have been behind them 100% too. It's a moment in history. He should realize that and he happened to be the opponent during a historical moment. If he someday wants one of his own, he's going to have to grow mentally.

Perfect example. Ibrahimovic chose with 18 to play for the Swedish flag and he had the chance to play for Croatia. If he chose otherwise, what you just wrote would certainly be not the case.

Well , i am not from Western or Eastern world . One doesn't even need to watch tennis to know the Propaganda that Western media has against East and anyone who isn't their footsoldiers .
Most movies made in west have Eastern Criminal surprisingly haha :D
You guys can keep on denying it .

THe less i talk about how Djokovic is treated by British crowds ,the better ! Lol

Medvedev clearly says what he felt today . Crowd definately didn't treat him well .

Even the commentators were biased today ! Haha

Atleast don't victim blame here . ( Med was treated badly ) .

Only against slavic Orthodox Eastern European countries. I don't think a Czech/Polish/Slovak/Slovenian/Croatian/Bosnian superstar would be treated badly in tennis. Look at football, Ibrahimovic is probably the third most popular player after Messi and Ronaldo.

I agree. I am surprised how naïve he's being. Quite entitled even.

I disagree, the dislike of eastern european slavic countries goes for the orthodox ones. Not the catholic ones (or muslim one in Bosnia).

I don’t think the lack of support was the issue. It was the outright lack of respect and blatant abuse of etiquette. I don’t want to live in a world where it’s fine to make noise intentionally in between first and second serves like that.

I guess that's the difference between Med and Djokovic then. Nobody in the history of tennis ever faced as hostile of a crowd as Djokovic vs. Fed at the 2015 USO or any of the Wimbledon finals where Djoker played Fed. And he won all those matches in spite of everyone in the stadium despising him. Med had some crowd support last night, Djokovic literally had none (aside from his box) in countless matches.

And if Med was dying physically at age 25, then what does that say about 35 year old Rafa outlasting him? He has no one but himself to blame for losing a match he should have won.
It's one thing when the crowd is fully supporting the other guy. But getting applauded for missing the 1st serve or making errors? Come on.

So this means he is embracing the villain character even more?

I think it means he has been training and dreaming about moments like this since he was a child, and then, when you reach that big goal that has taken tens of thousands of hours of training, you get booed between 1st and 2nd serves, booed on a missed toss.... booed when your ball is called in... Total, absolute lack of etiquette and as unmusical crowd as you can get. It was like it was staged for a movie....

The drop shots weren't a bad tactic. Ralph was gassed and he was making Ralph sprint up every time. The problem was he was clueless on how to defend the dropper once Ralph got to them. He was too afraid to cover the net, and he was on top of the baseline in no mans land so he couldn't hit a real pass either.
Med’s net game is sub par for a top 20 player. Well, just like almost everybody else in the pack.

I didn't said that the sport as whole has a Slavic racism problem, no I've said that tennis as a sport has slavophobia and eastern European racism problem. Big difference. ;)

Tennis used to be a sport for civilized people. Nowadays only idiots and hooligans are watching it live.

I think it is a thing with just a few slavic orthodox countries like Serbia and Russia, but I think a superstar from Czechia or Bosnia or something would be treated well. Wawrinka is slavic too and he is loved.

I am confused here. Medvedev wants to be play a sport which is played in front of large crowds. He also wants to abuse officials and bait the crowd and have them be absolutely respectful to him, and when they don't, the crocodile tears come. And the heartbreak is because...?

because crowds arent giving some of these guys a fair shot.

Med did nothing to deserve getting booed when entering the court, thats absurd.

putting this as a blanket statement makes it wrong. Two of my up and coming favorites are the other two Russians that he grew up with. And I like plenty Eastern Europeans other players as well. They don't behave like jerks toward others is the unifying factor to me.

I would hope that too but he will have to win me over with better behavior. Won't get my respect when he is stomping on the dreams of others such as other players and umpires--we might not consider those as worthy of dreams because they are not as lofty as where his talent can take him but to me I consider it the same--respect gets respect. And insulting the crowd and expecting a miracle to come out of it. He needs a tougher skin if he's going to take that route.

They shouldn't boo between serves or on double faults IMO that's just in poor taste but he's not going to win them over with insults.
